Raptors game was on ScoreHD in HD tonight. From the ACC.

I don't get how when they show events they can't go to a single line ticker like ESPN2's.

Or is it a % of the screen mandated by the CRTC?

As indicated earlier in this thread, the size (and probably placement and opacity) of the ticker was part of the broadcast rights.

The Commission permitted the licensee to devote up to 15% of its quarterly broadcast schedule to live sports coverage provided that sports results and information were displayed on part of the screen during live programming2 and the licensee broke away from live programming at least once every fifteen minutes to present video highlights of sports events as well as sports results and information in a format that includes both audio and video components. The Commission also permitted the licensee to devote up to 10% of its quarterly programming schedule to regional programming.
First, we will provide breaking news and scores on our ticker. The ticker will never leave the screen, emphasising our commitment to our original core mandate.
The first part of the condition specifies that Headline Sports must continue to present sports results and information while it covers live sports events. This could be done using an alphanumeric display that would run at the bottom or side of the screen during the game. The applicant referred to this display as "the ticker".

Edit: After a thread search, I came up with this from Scoreboard...
We can't get rid of the Ticker CRTC rules as far as stretching goes you won't be seeing that in our final offer coming soon will be active Pan and Scan technology form the 70mm film world there will be no noticable morphing when compared to our SD channel watch for other cool stuff when we roll out whcih will be soon we are still dealing with technology that will make its debut on The Score, if you can't be big you gotta be better

SB

NOTHING about size, placement or opacity.

Based on the following comment from your post (and many others earlier in this thread) from SB, I don't put much faith in what he said - perhaps his initials should have been reversed? ;)

...as far as stretching goes you won't be seeing that in our final offer coming soon...

He did say in post 17.
understanding that as part of our License Agreement with the CRTC we have to have the ticker in the raster at all times including commercials.

He also said:

I'm waiting for whatever he meant by that...

I didn't find anything about size, placement or opacity either, but I haven't bothered looking at the license.

well i'm glad i'm not alone on the quality (or lack of) of this channel. i'm new to HD so still figuring things out, but was confused over the stretching on this channel.

as asif9t9 noted, last night's raptors game was in proper HD. the commercials were still stretched.

the ticker doesn't bother me at all. it's the reason i check The Score during the evening.

How did they do this? Since the screen area above the ticker is much thinner than 16:9, did they stretch, crop, or what?

Hmm, since the forum got rearranged, I never see these threads.

The game in HD, cropped at the bottom. It looked as good, if not better than the TSNHD games. The ticker was annoying, but worth it for the HD. The funny thing is I PVR all Raptor games on SD channels, and watch them while recording, and forward thru commercials.

I also zoom in on the SD with my tv's zoom mode. With the Score, I can zoom in nicely, and not see any of the ticker. And the camera angle in basketball means the cropped picture is nothing important.

Anyways, a couple of times, I saw something popup at the bottom of the zoomed screen. It said something about "Available in HD". I just assumed the ticker said something about, "TNT basketball, avalable in HD". Well, I kept watching the game on the SD channel until I got to "live" time.

Then, I decided to flip to Score HD.....and there was the game, in HD!!! I had no idea it would be in HD. And I don't know if the Score will be doing any more HD Raptor games.

Globe and Mail : The Score produced its first Toronto Raptors HDTV telecast of the season on Wednesday. It will shoot the remaining regular-season Raptors games and playoff games in HDTV.

well, still figuring all this stuff out, but it sure wasn't stretched. i'm assuming they left it as is and we simply couldn't see the portion hidden by the ticker. the score was across the top. everything looked in proportion.

Perhaps they meant all the remaining home games. Last night's game was in Miami.

Is The Score Tonight, or any of their original programming in HD? I can't tell. I know the Raptors games and march Madness games are.

Funny thing about the Raptors games, however. For most of the season you could catch Raptors games on their HD channel, I had to stretch the screen for about half of the games on my Panasonic 50" 1080i.

So it's nice that they are actually showing Raptors games in TRUE HD.

Looks like this launched on 542 sometime over the Christmas break. What does everyone else think so far?

Is it just me or does it look like the Standard def-broadcasts are being stretched on this channel, instead of adding the black bars to the HD signal?

I was into a Wal-Mart recently and they were showcasing The Score HD as part of their ExpressVu advertising. To be honest here...the stretched images actually looked fair. I think it has been discussed before that they hope to have their highlights HD in the future. All I can say is...when that day comes, TheScore HD will be one flipping sweet HD channel. The TVs at the Wal-Mart weren't even at their best quality since they are sending the signal to several TVs, but on the ones that are adjusted properly, the channel looks quite nice. On Sundays when they are doing the NFL highlights with the scores in the border, the highlights are really fuzzy, but as soon as they get the highlights HD, that problem will be rectified.

Their HD content has risen sharply this year, and they are very close to becoming an excellent HD service.

New to the site, and was wondering if anyone here knew if The Score HD is going to be airing WWE RAW in HD tonight? I know its starting on USAHD in the US, but I havent been able to find any info on whether or not we'll be getting it in Canada.

Any info would be great!

Thanks!

Looks like the Score HD finally got rid of the stretch... I've noticed that since Monday night, all non-HD (4:3) programming now has bars on the side with a Score HD logo.

ESPNEWS is going HD at the end of the month. They have released what their ticker will look like on the HD version of the channel. I think that SCORE HD should copycat this style.
