I would question how a "New in unopend box" Rental receiver came to be left with a Rental Customer, anyway.
So you are saying that they had the receiver, sealed in a box and they were paying $20 per month to sit and look at the box.? Does not compute. The policy is that NO Rental receiver is left at a customers un-activated and installed. These are all delivered by a tech, unless there is a chance it was a replacement for a defective one, in which case you have a refurbished receiver anyway, which would clearly say on the box "RENTAL".
You are stuck with the receiver, I doubt that Bell will assist, lets face it, they are still getting the $20 per month......
As for putting it on E Bay, or selling it on, I would hope you were just joking, that would be fraudulent, as you know it cannot be added to anyones account.
Sadly you just learned an expensive lesson, if a deal appears too good to be true, it usually is....... Caveat Emptor....

The box is a beige box but doesn't have rental unit on it and the serial #'s match the receiver.
If I sell it it will be sold as is, clearly stating that it can't be activated. At this point if I get $10 bucks for it I'll help!

I would hang onto it. Drop him an e-mail explaining that it is a Rental and Bell are still charging someone $20 per month for it and that if the account is closed and the receiver not shipped back within 30 days, Bell will invoice them for the full cost of the receiver of $499.
It might just get you a reply.....Worth 1 last e-mail I would think and then at least you have proof that you did all within your power to do the right thing.

I would consider small claims court depending on what province you live in.

colin1098, Although Small Claims is an option, if you can't find them now, you'll have a hard time to contact them for serving them with the Court documents.
I would contact your Local Police Department in regards to this FRAUD!, as that is what it is. The people who you bought it from did not have the right to sell it to you! If this was legal, you could go rent a car for the weekend, sell it, and pocket the cash.
It is worth a call to the Police, who are very busy, but this is a Crime, and if you know where these people live, (you said you bought it locally), one visit from the Police may be enough to resolve this for you!

I don't think tracking down someone selling a rental receiver will be very high on the Police priority list, maybe I'm wrong.
All that might result is the receiver going back to Bell and no money going back to you.

I'm not trying to cause anyone any problems, but if I bought a receiver that was stolen, I would either return it to who it was stolen from, or contact Police and turn it over to them! I don't want to be in possession of stolen goods, nor do I want to sell stolen goods to anyone.
Lots of people don't report crimes because they believe the Police are too busy or will not investigate. Some say the reason for dropping crime rates is because less is reported.
The crime may take a lower priority, but there are special investigators for fraud who do the follow up.
I'm sure some of these victims wish this fraud never went this far!

Hi, i sold the units on ebay. i was told to call in and make notes i was selling. i did that a few weeks ago and despite fact that a few years ago when i was with bell they could be difficult on phone, the agent was very helpful and made notes i was selling the hd 6100 and my sd receiver.
I was contacted by ebay winner buyer of the 6100 that had an integrated smart card when i last used it, and they asked how they activate it..as they thought i needed to call bell. i said i already called bell and also that i was informed a free card would be supplied as it did not need one when i owned it and had no other card in it since i last used it and as advised on here, it would get a free card.
But now they call me today saying they spoke to a rep adamant that no free ones would be given out and have not been given out and that they would have to pay $44 bucks for a new one???
I am an honest seller, if in the end i had to compensate them i would, but i would lose money? With price i sold it at, along with fees for ebay, i would have been better off throwing the hd receiver in the garbage vs selling it and giving buyer money to buy a card that is almost equal to what i sold it for.
can person who advised me..pinta reply..or someone to help me? I was considering coming back to bell in near future and an experience like this ..so far..is not good. I would not go to tv bell..as my building doesnt allow sats..but still. i am upset.

As for the 6100, as long as it was never converted to an External Smart Card, then Bell would normally ship out a Card, as soon as the receiver is activated on an existing account. It this is going on a new account I would expect the same but i am not sure. Bell might charge for the card and then refund the money by way of an account credit.... That is very normal.

apparently (by what I received from an e-mail from a bell agent online) the "free upgrade" is no longer in effect since january. The reason being that enough time has been alocated to upgrade a receiver to a new card. Apparently bell is trying to cut administration costs since "someone has to actually treat the sending of the card manually". I don't care either way but I am letting you guys know what bell's official responce is.
As a side note: the 30% for 12 month save offers have been removed "because bell has the richest loyalty offers across the board"

Wow, no more 30%-40% discount offers... There will be a lot of angry customers in 6-9 months when these dsicounts run out (for those theat have them). They will be looking to renew with the same discount for another year... Wonder what Bell will do to keep them happy?

I have a call into Bell to see if this is infact the case. Not saying I don't believe you, Silverdragon, I just want to see if I can discover what they will offer as an alternate.
What is the current process of activating a new receiver, that is, do I have to connect a phone line to it prior to activating, does the online/IVR process ask you to connect a phone line? Just wondering as the room I am planning on putting a new receiver does not have a phone jack.

If it is brand new, never before activated I do those on-line at the Bell web site, very easy and so far worked every time.
Thanks Pinza but do you recall if the online process requested you to connect the receiver to a phone jack? What information does it request to activate the receiver?

I have decided to change to another television supplier June 1st, 2011 when we move to our new house. I currently have a perfectly good working condition 9200 and sw44 that I intend to sell in May 2011.
1) Should I remove the smart card from the 9200? Will the new owner have to get one from Bell when he activates it again?
2) What is the process to cancel my Bell account? How long should I advise them?
3) Anything to watch for when cancelling Bell?

1. No, the smartcard goes with the receiver.
2. Bell will demand 30 days notice.
3. You'll likely get a retention offer!
Ask Bell to put a note on your account that you're selling the 9200 receiver. A buyer will want to check your receiver number with Bell to make sure it's not a rental or has money owing.
