: Procedures for Buying and Selling of BTV Receivers - See Post 1
Pinza 2008-12-19, 10:35 AM Have you got the receiver.?
Have you tried it in the Data Stream.?
The 6100 originally had an internal Smart Chip, if the # in Sys Info, match's that Chip, then I would think it will be a Free Card.
If you connect it can you see Ch# 198.
golferboy1862 2008-12-19, 11:01 AM I just connected it to the dish and changed the receiver to channel 198 and only see brief channel information and then a black screen. Does the receiver need to be in-stream for any length of time? Keep in mind I'm not currently a subscriber.
Pinza 2008-12-19, 12:01 PM No you should see 198 all the time, unless the New Card had been used and then not supplied.
On the bottom is the S00# that was with the receiver when new, does this # match the details in Sys Info. Menu 6, 1, 3.?
golferboy1862 2008-12-19, 03:49 PM The SOxxxxxxxx numbers match but my satellite LNBs seem to be switch as indicated by a system test. Oops I'll have to check those but it's too cold out right now.

Glenn3 2008-12-29, 08:34 PM Sold my 3100 receivers back to bell for 40 each...in credit
trishcollins 2009-01-06, 09:28 PM A few months ago, I bought a used older model receiver for $25 off eBay and couldn't get it to work. Talked to Bell several times and finally gave up. Returned it to the owner (local) and got my money back no questions asked.
Then my mother-in-law gave me her reallly old one when she upgraded to HD. I called Bell to activate it (and the wouldn't until she deactivated it from her account and told them she was selling it) and he told me right off the SmartCard number was out of date and I needed a new one at a cost of $100-- the same price as a new 4100 receiver. So I bought the new receiver instead. Figured why bother with the older model if I could get a new one for the same price.
It then dawned on me that the older model receiver I bought on eBay must also have had an outdated Smartcard, but even though Bell asked for the number on the card and in the setup several times, none of them picked up on it. I guess it all depends on who you get on the phone when you call. That's what makes it so frustrating.
peano 2009-01-07, 04:52 AM If the old card starts S04..... they'll send you a new one for free.
Pinza 2009-01-07, 05:21 AM Unless is starts S0459, this range is compatible with Nagra 3.
visiter555 2009-01-09, 08:04 AM Just activated a 3100 that I had bought a while back from flea bay. Was new in box and had the previous gen smartcard. Called up Bell, got a CSR, checked the firmware, IRD and smartcard numbers and activated it. Now I have 198 and a new N3 card on the way out to me.
The "current" Bell policy appears to be that if the card in the box is one gen old (previous gen) they will provide a N3 card at no charge. If it is two or more generations old, they will sell you a N3 for $100, but they recommend you buy a new sub-$100 receiver (aka 3100/4100).

I am going to get Bell Express VU next month
I have purchase there Digital Essential Package and get one HD reciver with the package
I was wondering about purchasing another ( used reciver ) on KIJIJI or somewhere
If I purchase a reciever NOT from Bell what do I need to know or do to have it functional...Thans for any help...Chris
Pinza 2009-02-10, 04:47 AM Well basically you need to ensure that any receiver you buy is actually able to be activated on your new Bell account. First step, before buying is to get the receiver # from the seller, then a call to Bell should tell you if you can put that receiver on your account or not. It is also worth asking for the Smart Card #, although I can understand why this would not be given in full by the seller. I would never give out the full #. You need to ensure that the Card starts with S06 or S0459, if NOT then you will need another Card before activation, which could be a pain.

I've merged your post into the existing sticky thread on the subject. Follow Pinza's advice and the other advice in this thread and you should be fine.
tvnut 2009-02-26, 11:32 AM I recently bought a complete 9242 system (dish included). At this point I am not sure if I want to subscribe the system/service. When I bought it at Best buy they went through all kinds of security sceens on their computer (it took like 5 minutes) I gave them my same and address too. I didnt have to sign anything except the credit card slip. I have a friend who is subscribed and really wants the receiver. Apparently there are no more 9242s anymore. He is willing to pay me my in full so I think I might just sell it to him.
I assume the system i bought was intended for new hd customers. It has never been activated. Are these receivers transferrable? Is there an time limit for the receiver to be activated? Will he have any problems adding this receiver to his account (he already has an older hd box) Do I have to notify bell that I a selling him the receiver?
Thanks,
dosborne 2009-02-27, 10:48 AM Bell requires resellers to take all your information so that if a unit is not activated within a given period (I believe it is 30 days but I am guessing) then they can charge an addiitonal fee. This was primarily put in place as these units (in theory) are sold at a loss, as Bell expects to make up the difference in monthly fees. People were buying them and then hacking them, never subscribing.
Since the unit has not been activated, you should be able to give (sell) it to your friend without any issues. The easiest way to activate it is online. All he needs is the receiver number and smart card number.
Although I doubt it will be an issue, worst case if he has difficulties activating it, a simple call to Bell saying you bought it for him as a gift or, the truth, you sold it to him, should resolve it.
Although I'm not sure I have ever heard of anyone actually getting charged for non-activation ($200 comes to mind) I wouldn't push your luck too much (they do have your credit card info) and would either sign up yourself or sell it to your friend and get it added to his account sooner rather than later. Getting money back is a nightmare.
tvnut 2009-02-27, 11:20 AM Thanks,
You have answered all my questions
Whingenot 2009-03-01, 10:31 PM Agonizing reading through 16-pages and I did not see a direct parallel to my story.
I bought two IRDs from the widow of a friend. Several months later my first gereration BEV 3500 would not boot. So I called BEV and asked that my N3 card be transferred to one of the purchased IRds; I think it was a model 4000 After some off-line deliberation, the CSR came back with the explanation that the card in the purchased IRD was too old; there was no N3 conversion available for it. I told him that I was about to walk; *C was waiting. He told me to do whatever I had to do. That offended me, a sub since almost Day-1!
When I cooled down, I parked the IRDs and am still debating my next move, not watching TV, of course.
Any advice?
kandkt 2009-03-01, 11:31 PM Phone up and press the button for the cancellation department. They will ask why you want to leave and I am sure that they will do something for you.

This has been covered in threads in this forum. Cards that have been activated cannot be transfered to another as the receiver ID has been written to them and "married" to the card.
First generations cards will not be updated for free. Second generation will. The cost is $69 (or $100 - I forget) for a new card. Usually cheaper to buy a low end receiver. I'm not sure why you would be upset at this. You could have added them to your account long ago (as soon as you got them) and received free updated cards.
Please keep to the topic of buying and selling though. I think what you want is the retention deal which is covered in its own thread.
Thanks
taxtwit 2009-03-24, 01:07 PM Bought a "used" 9242 (actually brand new & still in sealed box) privately a few months ago and it has "issues". In particular, it sporadically powers off and on again on a fairly regular basis. Also emits loud audio static "cracks" from time to time (often just before it powers off and on) and experiences the occasional audio drop.
Unit was purchased by the original owner in Oct/08 (he stuffed his original receipt in the box) and purchased by me in Dec/08 and authorized on Bell shortly thereafter. Does the unit still have warranty, even though I'm not the original owner? Assuming it does, anyone know how Bell is handling replacement of no-longer-current receivers - if they'll only replace it with a 9241, I'll live with the issue (when it powers off, it still records so I just hit the rewind button and pick up where the show left off).
