At leat you learned a $30 lesson, not a $300 lesson :)

Definitely, buying a non-suscribable unit is a big problem.
- it was a rental
- it was a dishnetwork unit
- it has money owing on the account (although this often can be bypassed since it really isn't your problem)
- stolen unit

Your options with the rental are:
- return it and get your money back, helping out the person who sold it
- return it and get your money back plus "shipping and handling" for your time and effort as it will likely still be to their advantage
- send it back to Bell, helping the person who sold it
- throw it out. Taking a loss for you and likely screwing over the person who sold it.

Unfortunately, your choices are limited and the unit isn't of any real / legitimate use to you.

Other than returning the unit, contacting the seller isn't going to do anything for you as Bell will not allow them to sell (therefore not allow you to buy) a rental unit, nor will they allow you to start renting that unit. You can of course rent a new unit from them......but I doubt that's what you want to do.

So I took advantage of the 100 dollars off a 5900 promotion that was on during the month of July, and I have to tell you, it was one of the better experiences I've had with BEV in a looong time.
CSR I dealt with over the phone was extremely helpful and actually made small talk that was worth contributing to! Also, received my Bill for August, and low and behold the credit has been applied to it........:D

I don't know what to think, but maybe swearing lent a helping hand Hugh???

Also, if you currently have three receivers active and sold three others in the past and the buyers never activated them, you still have six receivers on your account according to Bell and cannot add any more.
You can DEACTIVATE ANY OR ALL recivers on your account! Who gives a rats behind if the receivers are technically still under your name as owning them??? When you upgrade a receiver on a full 6 receiver account, they just deactivate the one you want and activate the new one.
And really all you need when u sell one of your receivers/or buy one from someone is ALL of their information. Name, address, receiver #, etc. I have bought receivers before, and that is all i required to activate them.

One of the problems in having the max number of receivers on your account is that you must call and speak to a CSR to remove one to be able to add one. You can not do this online or via the Bell IVR phone system.

Then again... who cares!!! lol

You can have more than 6 receivers on your account...ie. it is technically possible. BEV forgot to deactivate my 5900 after I replaced it with 9242. I went on line and checked my account for something and found all 7 receivers listed. So I tried hooking it up and presto...all programming. I had to call them again to deactivate once I sold it privately.

Yes the 6 receiver limit is the "official" maximum. They do allow certain customers to have more and they do forget to remove some as well, leaving more than 6 on accounts.

Even dosborne appears to have 8 receivers with 9 Tuners on his account, unless some are stacked in his closet.

Yes, it is possible, but it takes a fair amount of effort. I had to write to the executive office and basically prove to them that I did indeed have a requirement for more than 6. I also get called to "inventory" my equipment probably more often than most people. 2 of my receivers have dead modems (lots of lightning this year) and don't dial out any more.

Bought a used pvr.

I know it must be off the previous account before I can add it to mine.

The previous owner cancelled his entire bell account (went to star choice) on Sept 8/08.

Bell says there is no way I can add this receiver to my account as they cannot take it off his account. That makes a lot of sense huh? His account???? He doesnt even frickin have one!!!!!

So I guess I sit and wait till Oct 8, as this is the magical date when his account REALLY gets cancelled (one month after he actually cancelled.) I suppose Bell hopes customers may comeback before the month is up after they cancel, but with service like this, I dont imagine that happens too much.

Once Oct 8 roles around, I bet I will have to wait longer as the unit probably needs a new smartcard or something.

Actually, Bell's reply does make sense. The previous owner had already paid for the programming he cancelled up until his billing date. When you first sign up with Bell, or Star Choice for that matter, you pay for two months in advance. So technically, Bell cannot cancel the previous owner's account until his billing date arrives. In other words, your service terminates on your billing date, not on the date you cancel.

Cancelling the account and autorising the transfer of the receiver is 2 different things...
A receiver can be transferred at any point during the month, regardless of the programming that has been already paid.
Rental receivers can not be tranferred!

When an account is cancelled the receiver is still registered in the account of that person and can not be transferrred unless the person calls Bell and notifies them that he sold them. Cancelling the account doesn't mean client autorise the transfer of the receivers

Ex Agent brings up a good point. Is this receiver on a Rental Contract.?

If not, he needs to call Bell and tell them he sold the receiver to you and then it should be possible to add it to your account.

You can buy receivers even if you have the max on your account. You just can not activate it unless you deactivate one at the same time or previous to activation. I just bought a 6141S and I already have the max on my account.

Required a call to a CSR, I didn't tell them I had a new unit to activate. I just said I wanted to deactivate one of my units. Went through the spiel... then they said "that is done and is there anything else I can help you with today?".

THEN I ask then to activate the new unit. Works nice and smoothly as opposed to saying I have a new uint I want activated... LOL

On top of the maximum number of receivers, I have two 3100s and one 4100s "deactivated" in my closet. I also have four brand new in the box 3100s (onsale at $69.00 for the 3150 two pack & dish) which I bought at one of the Big Box stores via mail order in 2006 which have never been activated or "pre-authorized" via IRIS. They just sit there and collect dust, BUT if I ever need one I have them!

(I know...I have a sickness!!! lol)

At one point I had the Executive Office remove all the old systems (dead, in closet, etc). That saves a LOT of explaining to the %#@^ CSRs when I call in. My list was at 25 receivers at that time. They never removed any of the warranty replacements!!!!! Or the dead units not under warranty!

I am sure you know that the 3100's in the closet will all require new Smart Cards to be activated.

I am NOT sure if there will be a charge for these cards after the cut off date.

Yea, I am well aware of the Smartcard issue, but what can you do? I have been deactivating existing units and activating the old units to cover off the cards. Last time around on the card swap, if you were one rev back there was no problem, BUT who knows what Bell TV will do THIS time!!!!!

He tried this, and they still wont allow it.

It makes no sense, but fewer and fewer things do in this world.

Hello,

a friend of mine bought a used 9200 receiver, but it doesn't have a smartcard. Does anyone know what the procedure is to add this receiver to his account ? How much for a new smartcard ?

thank you guys

Depending on the S04 # that is written on the Receiver, a Card may NOT be required.

Please supply S04** and I will let you know, I do not require ALL the numbers.
