"TSN's SportsCentre becomes the first daily news show of any kind in Canada to be presented in High Definition. Join Rod Smith for the first edition of SportsCentre presented in TSNHD today at 6:30 pm et/3:30 pm pt."

via tsn.ca.

Interesting that CityTV could do CityLine in HD this morning but not news or BT. If they had, it would blow away the TSN claim. Of course, CTV is buying CHUM. Perhaps that explains it all, or am I just too much of a cynic?
BTW,didn't CTV's own Discovery HD do their daily science news show (Daily Planet) from Japan in HD last year?

Very happy with SportsCentre in HD! Nice to finally have HD highlights...happily making the switch back from SportsNet (I know they were only WideScreen, but it was better then 4x3).

BTW,didn't CTV's own Discovery HD do their daily science news show (Daily Planet) from Japan in HD last year?It wasn't really DP in Japan, it was more like Natasha and Jay in Japan, using NHK to show a bunch of science stuff in HD. I believe Jay and Natasha were actually in Japan, mostly at separate times for the recordings, although some segments showed them both.

They have the upcoming China series in HD next week.

The ticket doesn't really fit in now because it doesn't look HD .. OR is it?

Also anyone know why TSN doesn't carry ESPN's DD 5.1 audio for monday night football ??

Sportsnet's show is not HD. It is only in widescreen, that is way it says available in widescreen at the start. Sportscentre will be HD, not widescreen like Sportsnet.

Funny thing last night on Sportsnet. They were just finishing a show/broadcast and one anchor guy said "thanks for watching...blah, blah..Sportsnet News in High Definition". Then right after he said that the other anchor interjected "in Widescreen, widescreen". The first guy then said "oh yeah widescreen".

Hound it humourous for some reason.

It's pretty good looking widescreen though.

It's pretty good looking widescreen though. It is indeed. I have heard that they in fact use HD cameras in the studio, but their control booth can only handle SD Widescreen so they take a downconverted version of the camera feeds.

I've gotta say I am very impressed with the amount of HD highlights begin shown on sportscentre. I could really care less about the in studio... widescreen is all that's really needed for that. Let's be honest here, we watch to see the sports highlights, not to look at Dutchie's mug. Now on the other hand, if Hedger wanted to button down her... ahh nevermind. ;)

I was thinking the same thing. The bottom ticker does look fuzzy, and it's way too big.

The ticker is definately stretched SD. Except fro the TSN HD on the top that seems proportional but the rest is stretched.

Don't tell TSN, but for me the gimmick is already long over. I'll do what I always did before. I'll flip between TSN and SN and even The Score to see which report I want to see. And because SN is the first HD channel with Cogeco (ch 277), I'll tune to 277 first and start flipping channels upwards from there.

Gimmick.

That's quite the word to describe HD.

Anyway, I love it. It looks fantastic. The studio shots are awesome, but the real joy is seeing the HD hilights from all over the U.S.

I watched Sportsnet exclusively for a couple of years when they had widescreen and no one else did,

and now I'll watch TSN exclusively to thank them for the HD... because I love to see a great picture on a big screen and I don't call that a gimmick... that's for sure.

I only watched 5 minutes of the Tuesday broadcast.... but it seemed screwed up.

They have the digital graphics creating the proper screen real estate to show 4:3 highlights and not have it look all that bad.

But the highlights there were showing were clearly in widescreen originally, and crunching them into the 4:3 space made everything look squished.

Couldn't they have the wide "HD" side banners drop off when the source material is already widescreen?

Is anyone else getting big time macroblocking during the introduction, specifically during the graphic portions with the fast moving objects?

I am disappointed that their pre-game and half-time studio for the CFL is still 4:3 SDTV.

I agree HD Bob...I just assumed all their "in-house" shows such as the pre-game shows, off the record etc...would all be HD now...

Huge disappointment:confused:

I checked it out again after a couple days... and the broadcast was problem free. No macro blocking of any sort, they had lots of coverage in HD. It would be hard to put a number on it, but somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3rd of the event coverage was HD. There were no audio flubs and no aspect ratio problems. Most interesting is they had HD clips from events coveraged on other networks.

if you go to http://www.hdsportsguide.com/ , you can see what's in HD every night, and compare that with what they show for highlites in HD...the other day they didn't have Cubs highlites in HD on a highlite package from WGN...shame shame...

Does TSN have plans to upgrade their ticker to be HD on TSN HD?

What the heck? Every game in the NCAA March Madness is being broadcast in HD, yet most of the hilite packages on TSN Sportscentre are in SD. Lame.
