andreww 2006-02-12, 02:01 PM I prefer the Speed feed as I can't stand the british announcers preoccupation with british drivers. Almost as bad as having to watch Villineuve for laps on end, even though he is running 15th, during the Canadian GP.
I just wanna see or hear about the best battle on the track, and the guys on speed seem to agree with that philosophy.
jvillain 2006-02-13, 12:00 AM There is a host broadcaster in each country that then produces the "International Feed" that many other broadcaster pickup, do some voice over and distribute. That does not mean that no one else can bring cameras as well.
The problem with the Speedvision comentators is that they keep trying to turn F1 into Nascar. If they mention how they think F1 needs to bring the pace car out more often one more time I am going to scream.
egore 2006-02-13, 05:10 PM One of the things I like about F1 is that you hardly ever see the pace car. Champcar has to be the worst when it comes to the pace car coming out with every minor incident.
I think the Canadian and U.S. GP will be in HD and hopefully the Japan GP as well.
synmag 2006-02-15, 06:18 PM I think it was last year (maybe the year before), for the first GP of the season TSN opted to use the Speed feed instead of ITV, and there was a huge backlash. The next race TSN went back to ITV for it's feed :)
Yes, that more than a year ago. Someone posted TSN's feedback link in the F1-live forum and everyone sent a complaint. Some said it wouldn't make a difference. Well, by the time I had a chance to send a complaint the news was out that TSN was switching back to ITV coverage. That's the power of the internet. I couldn't believe it myself that they switched back for the very next race! I figured they would sign a contract for at least a full season and the best I could hope for was they swtich back for the next season.
jvillain 2006-02-20, 04:49 PM Dome Productions is supposed to have a new HD truck due by April 2006. That would make it ready for the Canadian GP if they were inclined to use it for that.

The TV coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix is contracted to the RDS cable Network. And they don't even have a digital channel yet. The HD truck is of no help. RDS must first start by getting a license for digital service.
RDS has never permitted its sister company, TSN, to take over production in the past so that TSNHD could carry coverage in HD and provide a SD feed to RDS and the rest of the world.

Incorrect. The Canadian Grand Prix is produced and shown on Radio-Canada. In fact, any GP that doesn't interfere with the Sunday morning mass show :( gets shown live on R-C and rebroadcasted on RDS

No. Radio-Canada gets the feed from RDS. The French description, picked-up by the SRC is made by RDS commentators Pierre Houde and Bertand Houle.
The SRC normally broadcast Live the Australian and the Malaysia GP with direct feeds from RDS, and RDS does a differed broadcast, then, all other GP are Live from RDS and differed by the SRC.
Years ago Radio-Canada negotiated to get the rights on the basis that RDS is not available OTA. But RDS never lost the exclusivity.
DoubleJ 2006-03-10, 11:13 PM My brother (in Regina) taped an F1 race for me on his pvr (motorola 6412) and I was surprised to see that it was HD. This was last season. He's with Access Communications...
So you can't say that F1 has never been broadcast in HD in Canada. I watched it and it was phenomenal... I hope it's broadcast in HD. F1 is amazing without HD, in HD sooo sweet.
Just confirmed that F1 is in TSn HD on my program guide... schweet.

F1 has never been in HD in North America. TSNHD carries F1 on its channel, just like this morning for the qualifications, and it's in SD on the HD channel. That is the way it is going to be for the year.

Score Board 2006-03-11, 12:26 PM Just thought I'd jump in and add what I know as a broadcaster.
Under threat RDS diversified it's 99% ownership by Bell http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2002/db2002-449.htmbut in the end it is still controlled by BGM who we all know is TSN and RDS does all production for TSN in Quebec. RDS uses Dome (50% owned by TSN) as there prefered production company. Dome supplies all crew for the production unless Producer and Director from RDS. The Canadian Grand Prix uses two full up SDI A Trucks with one B truck as support for over 30 SDI Cameras full up for the F!. I use Dome as well and am very familiar with their fleet and if you wanted to se the same coverage in native HD then you would need three A HD Trucks and one B Truck. So will you see the Canadian F1 in HD well you decied.
I will be speaking with the head of Dome's fleet next week to see how the 3rd truck is coming for obvious reasons and will ask about this question and report back.
Thx SB

RDS has yet to apply for a digital license at the CRTC. Until that happens, you won't be able to make use of HD trucks for F1 coverage in Canada.
The last I heard, RDS does not wish to have a digital license before 2008.
RDS does all production for TSN in Quebec Why do you say that? TSNHD does CFL in HD from Montreal... and RDS does it own CFL coverage on its SD cable channel.

Yes on the surface this is correct sorry I was to general. To answer your first statement.
RDS is on the basic analouge tear in Quebec and reaches every home on cable in Quebec no STB is required and it is a must carry. There are two reasons for their application for Digital. One is like all cable companies the move is to phase out analog thus allowing for more compresed digital carriage thus more bandwidth more selection more revenue there are conditions that have to be met by the BDU which are lengthy and I won't get into. Justifying this move to a board of directors will not reflect badly on thier EBATA and will allow HD to be implimented under a must do thus the vacating of analog space will carrying a share of capital for HD, very smart.
With your stament on CFL it is correct but again lets look deeper. Dome supplies trucks to both RDS and TSN. When doing HD at Montreal two Dome trucks SD-HD are parked side by side at the venue. Dome supplies the crews which all work primarily for RDS which will crew both trucks and share the same labour pool so you are correct on paper while not in practise. In the end it dosn't really matter RDS and TSN have same ownership and they share 50% ownership of Dome with Sports Net. You will see RDS doing HD for TSN while down converting SD for there service.
Geez how can The Score survive with a sub rate of 20 cents compared to TSN at $1.15 and Sports Net at 80 cents per month.
"To think that The Score could ever consider doing HD is crazy and it will never happen"
This was the the concensous from TSN/RDS and SN.

RDS Revs up to Broadcast F1
March 01, 2006 - The Réseau des sports (RDS) is launching its new Formula 1 season as the official broadcaster of the 18 Grand Prix races and qualifying races.
“Réseau des sports is alone in the driver’s seat this year for the francophone F1 telecasts,” says Gerry Frappier, RDS president. “We’re proud to be able to continue offering viewers the best quality and excellence in on-air coverage.”
In addition to covering the Grand Prix races, RDS will continue to offer racing fans its F1 Magazine show featuring interviews, reports and analyses of the races. Program host Bertrand Houle lets us in on what to watch for. “The 2006 season has all the elements of top-speed entertainment! In addition to changes to the qualifying process, this year’s driving pairs are especially strong and the engine change – V10s were replaced by V8s – should put the teams on an even footing,” he says.
The F1 season starts in Bahrain on March 12 and ends in Brazil on October 22. This year’s Canadian Grand Prix will be held on June 25.
With regards to F1 if you share trucks and crew as they do now then you could see a dual transmision feed one in SD french and one in HD english this is common practice for all HD live event where SD and HD are required.
Thx SB
Bruno Landry 2006-03-11, 05:26 PM RDSHD is shedule to be launch in spring or fall 2007.
mfabien 2006-03-11, 05:31 PM This thread topic is F1.
The bottom line is that Canadian Grand Prix will not be broadcasted in HD because RDS has the exclusive contract. This applies to TSNHD, in spite of being able to gives us HD events and in spite of being a sister company of RDS.
If the Montreal CFL games shown in HD results from a RDS crew manning the equipment, there is one sure thing, that arrangement does not apply to the F1 race.

If RDS uses Dome which they currently almost always do for all Live Event then the crews will be local. Producers and Directors are usually the only variable that changes between TSN and RDS but not always.
I to would love to see the F1 offered as an option in HD RDS may face pressure as the host broadcaster to supply an access feed in HD. This would of course be reflected in the cost to the access feed tarrif to other broadcast rights holders both national and international. These tarrifs would more than pay for production costs to RDS for HD and would offer higher revenues. This will all depend on wether other rights holders can justify the costs of accessing the HD service, if they can you will see the F1 in HD. All comes down to dollars by the time RDSHD is up and running an HD broadcast will be required for F1 and the production cost will be offset by the HD tarrifs to access, once again very smart.

HD perhaps for the NA rounds?
JesseJ 2006-04-18, 08:58 PM I like how it says, "it is not known if the HD pictures will be available anywhere."
I would watch F1 on TSNHD. If only for seeing the cars, and listening to the V8 shrill in 5.1.

Not truly HD. However the F1 races that TSN-HD shows upconverted are much nicer looking than the regular definition TSN channel. It could be my imagination, but I think the Europe races look particularly good. It may be that the european TV format converts more nicely.
