It will be interesting to see what NBC does this weekend. You'd think with them losing NASCAR they would focus their HD attention to golf.

So does CBS own a lot more cameras now? Because they covered this past weekend's golf coverage all in HD, which takes a lot of cameras to do. 47 though is a lot for football.
docted: I heard about the grass as well. It cost the NFL $500 000 grand to grow it, and then they did ship it to Miami for the big game. The field will certainly look amazing with all those HD cameras covering the game.

^^ i'm guessing that all those HD cameras for golf are being at the superbowl, hence that is why CBS isn't covering golf this weekend, i believe NBC is instead.

Golf would take alot of HD cameras, i would say at least 3 HD cameras per hole, x 18 thats 54 HD cameras for one golf tournament. Incredibly expensive.

Not as good as CBSHD.

They are using SD handhelds. :(

Heres hoping for the presidents cup in Montreal they spend the extra $ and use HD handhels.

When the golf started the opening shot was HD, but the on course shots were not in HD. Still nice to have the widescreen than the annoying bars on the side of the screen.

Incredibly expensive. But other than major tournaments they rarely cover all 18 holes. And even then at majors I believe they move cameras from they early holes -i..e when the last players go through 1,2,3 the cameras are moved to 16,17, 18 etc. Plus a lot of the cameras are handhelds that travel with the groups being shown the most.

If you want to see golf in HD done right, wait for the Masters. They were the first and will always be the best because that's the way the boys in the green jackets want it.

Can we start the GlobalHD simsub Masters thread yet? ;) Since Global will be simsubbing it. :) (well, more likely than not). I do agree Masters is the best HD Ive seen sports wise.

Still crappy that CBS can do all HD and NBC cant. At least CBS carries more events than NBC.

Pebble Beach this weekend on CBS should look good, if it doesnt rain too much.

It's not surprising that NBC sports is only doing partial HD in their golf telecasts - they have always been a laggard at HD while CBS has been the leader. CBS has done The Masters, US Open Tennis, and the Final Four in HD for at least five years. (I got HD in late March of 2002 and all of these events have been in HD since that time) Until about two years ago NBC sports had done almost no HD - only the odd Breeders Cup.

This is an interesting topic. The folks at Augusta National are FIERCELY protective of the quality of the broadcast and their brand. And I mean fierce. They made a small indoor golf place here in Ottawa change their name because they were using "Masters" in it.

I have to assume that if Global has the rights to the Canadian broadcast that they would have to adhere to the same conditions as CBS, i.e. much reduced commercial time, etc. and by the same token if the gentlemen in the green jackets found out that Global had messed up the broadcast, you can be sure that they would have their rights revoked.

TSN will run prime-time encores of the final two rounds of the Masters. If it's in HD then I guess people can ignore the news and wait for that if they fear Global HD.

TSN also have it Thurs/Fri.

In an e-mail reply a few weeks ago, Golf Channel told me they were starting HD at the beginning of February. Now whether they have yet started I don't know but whether the distibutors will carry the HD signal is another matter.

The Golf Channel has started their HD coverage. They have a joint HD channel with Versus (the network that coves NHL hockey in the US and used to be known as OLN). I don't believe that anyone in Canada currently carries the channel as it likely has not been approved by the CRTC. If the channel were to be carried in Canada it would not be able to show the hockey.

TSN HD is broadcasting Versus games.

TSN HD is broadcasting Versus games. They are carrying some of the Versus games but that is exactly my point - TSN has the rights in Canada so while NHL games are on they would have to provide alternate content for Canada or a blackout screen. This is not the case for golf where THE GOLF CHANNEL also owns the Canadian rights.

Pebble Beach is extra special this weekend, because we were in Monterey/Carmel in October. It's great to see something we just saw, in high definition.

Props to CBS again. Looks great at Pebble.

Even had HD shots of Mickelson on another course.

Hope NBC does the same later on in the year.

Once again, Riviera looked beautiful on CBS. And thankfully Lefty choked at the end. :)

Next 6 weeks are all NBC, lets hope they have learned their lesson and will use handheld HDs, especially for the Players.

Anyone have any updated info on HD weekday coverage showing up? Ive emailed both ROgers and TGC, and they just seem to blame each other for the it not being carried up here. :?

Will we get to see the first two rounds of the Masters?
