: What are your best DVD-A recordings?
dlussier 2006-01-15, 09:25 PM I recently picked up Peter Green's Blues (Fleetwood Mac) on DVD-A. It's a good mix with mild use of surrounds. Also good is Buena Vista Social Club is DVD-A althought my NAD T-534 DVD player has some issues with this disc.
supervij 2006-01-15, 10:17 PM The DVD-As in my collection that I like the best are:
Blue Man Group -- The Complex
Tom Cochrane & Red Rider -- Trapeze: A Collection
Queen -- A Night at the Opera
Great mixes, these.

Tubular Bells (the rerecorded version) sounds great, except for John Cleese. His voice doesn't have quite the same effect as the original.
Neil Young's Harvest also sounds great.
tak9ca 2006-01-16, 04:21 AM Hey Folks,
I use Tom Cochranes Trapeze to show the mixing and swirling (the intro into Lunatic Fringe is overwhelming). But for soul searching and relaxing I use The Mavericks, self titled, also Foreigner 4 is a neat mix that brings back some memories. Very disappointed with Fleetwood Mac's Say You Will, too eclectic for my mainstream tastes.
The clarity of DVD-A is awe inspiring. Even with relatively cheap gear it is wonderful.

BPWingN 2006-04-02, 10:19 PM Queen: A Night At The Opera
Yes: Fragile
Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon
All of the above are excellent in both audio quality and the use of surrounds.
The biggest eye opener for me is Yes:Fragile. I grew up on this album and the Hi-Rez sound is absolutely amazing.
240SX 2006-04-04, 12:49 AM Anyone have a link to the Queen or DSOTM albums, all I found on amazon was SACD...
supervij 2006-04-04, 01:25 AM Queen's A Night at the Opera: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005RG6M/104-6766858-7588740?v=glance&n=5174
Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is SACD, not DVD-A . . . and it's here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008CLOA/qid=1144128075/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-6766858-7588740?s=music&v=glance&n=5174
I didn't see either of these on amazon.ca, just .com. And try out some used record shops; that's where I found both of these. The Queen DVD-A and the Pink Floyd SACD cost me $15 each at the used shops.
Best of luck finding them!

filper 2006-04-06, 11:25 AM anyone know where I can get any DVD-A or SACD recordings of U2?
They do not exist.
QuickSilver 2006-04-06, 12:16 PM ok...I was pretty sure DVD-A didnt' but I have seen things on amazon.com for SACD of the Joshua Tree and that is really the only one I want. Didn't know if any retailors had them in Canada.

No U2 SACDs exist at this time (consult www.sa-cd.net when in doubt).

MoFi disc is clearly a Red Book gold CD, the Amazon advertised items are likely mistakes...
QuickSilver 2006-04-06, 01:38 PM Ok thanks for clarifying things...wish they would release some nice multi channel mixes of their albums...seems kind of dumb to me not to.
BPWingN 2006-04-06, 02:06 PM A few of my favorite DVD-A releases.
Tom Cochrane And Red Rider----Trapeze
I bought it on the recommendations in this thread, and I'm not dissapointed.
It's great. Thanks all, as I wouldn't have purchased this otherwise.
Dire Straights-------------------Brothers In Arms
A recent "hybrid" release. The DVD-A is marvelous, making this wonderfully produced album sound even better. Highly reccomended.
Yes-----------------------------Fragile
Though musically this may not be everyones taste, it's one of my favorite albums from the 70's. The surround mix is very well done, making lots of use of the expansive sound stage. I would say this is the album in DVD-A that most impresses me with the improvement in audio quality. It's hard to believe this is from the same original masters that have been mixed to other formats for years. Absolutley stunning audio quality.
Steely Dan----------------------Two Against Nature
Album and recording of the year in 2000. Sonically amazing, one of the best engineered albums I've ever heard, with enough use of the surrounds to make it very interesting. A fantastic demo disc to show the audio qualities of your system.

It's one of the best I own.
Great disc.
supervij 2008-08-19, 10:24 PM Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is available on DVD-A, but it's the Alan Parsons quad (4.0) mix. It's not availabe commercially, but it can be found on various torrent sites. It's a fairly different mix from the SACD, more adventurous is some places, less effective in others. Worth listening to, definitely.
Glad you liked Trapeze, filper. One of my favourite DVD-As as well, although I wish it contained all the songs from the CD release. Not just terrific rock 'n' roll songs, but great sound and great surround mixes.
I'll add Blue Man Group's Audio. It's an all-instrumental album, no vocals, so the tired mind may wander a bit. But some of the tracks are really incredible and totally amaze in surround.
cheers,
supervij
