Humbar 2011-11-16, 05:30 PM The YA-1713 is a great antenna. I've got 2 of them combined, one pointed at CKVR and the other pointed at CHCH. WBBZ is tough to get at my location. Can you get 15.1 at your location, it comes in great here in Stouffville. WPXJ is also an easy catch for me as well.
tennative 2011-11-16, 06:26 PM I have no problem with reception of 15X. Seems like an unnecessary duplication of 26.X. Both vary between 60% and 100% on my CM7000
The YA1713 was my first choice. I'll point it the same way as the CM4228. Question: Do I have to have exactly the same length of co-ax from the balun to the preamp as I do for the CM4228 to keep them in phase. Hopefully I won't lose 9 and 11.
prose116 2011-11-16, 09:05 PM I have the YA17-13 pointed at wbbz , I get it 80% of the time. I also get CHCH all the time and CKVR mostly at night. I was thinking of pointing it more towards Hamilton to see if I can get CKVR stronger and CKCO.
Dave Loudin 2011-11-17, 10:14 AM Combine the two antennas via a UVSJ (UHF/VHF Signal Joiner). No need to worry about coax lengths.
Geo35 2011-11-19, 12:43 PM Installed a original CM4221 yesterday(thanks a million DXING.Bruce for supplying it!) with a chimney mount on a 8.5 foot mast. Total Height is about 25 feet. I'm located near Sheppard and Birchmount.
When I first installed it and pointed it directly to Buffalo, I basically got almost all of the channels at 100%, but since I am a Rogers subscriber I
figure I will peak to one of the channels that I don't get..WNYB 49.2 Cool TV, yes I am still living my youth through 80s videos :).
A pleasant surprise came through in ION(another channel not available on Rogers). My TV Fool does not look promising for this channel, but it is coming
through at 40%. I hope it keeps up.
I need to modify my install however..My mast is a 1" diameter pipe and I could not fully tighten the chimney mount clamps(which are designed for 1.25" pipe) as well as I would have liked to. There is some slight sway in the antenna when the wind blows. I shimmed some extra sheet metal strips to tighten...but I think I will just go to home depot as get a 1.25" diameter 10' mast and get a more solid install, plus I will gain another few feet of height.
To summarize the results:
Buffalo
7, 17, 23, 29 @95+%
4 @85%
2, 49 @100%
51 @40%
26 Intermittent 40%, mostly does not work, but was able to receive when pointed directly at Buffalo.
Toronto
Even though I am peaked SE towards Batavia I still get some Toronto Stations at 100%
5, 25, 19 @100%
9, 19, 41, 47, 57, 69 @40-80%
I'm quite pleased with the results.
recneps77 2011-12-22, 04:11 PM In a new house, getting my antenna set up going here.
In the meantime, I have a leftover cheapo antenna from the brand-that-must-not-be-named (:p) that I have on the pole for testing.
I had the pole propped up against the house on the deck for testing (great results :D)
I then put it in the position you can see here:

The pole is pointing south (if it were to be raised up, pointing at Buff)
I got a little chuckle when I noticed I could still receive all Toronto stations! (granted not at 10 bars, but still, not bad!)
ARDUN 2011-12-23, 03:18 PM Just an observation...I'm noticing more and more antenna's in and around the Brooklin/Whitby/Oshawa area lately.
Seems like this OTA thing might be catching on!
recneps77 2011-12-23, 04:15 PM Or you're just noticing them now because you yourself use one ;)
I live in older whitby, where most antennae have gone unused and neglected. They're mostly yagi's with a bent element here and there.
I have noticed a few get refreshed to a bowtie-style, mostly around where "Mr. Able Antenna" lives/lived (up the street from my old house)
Guess he helped them see the light ;)

Within the last month, there are 3 new setups in my neighbourhood..surprising as this is not summer time. On my street, a noname 4 bay went up on a tripod that used to mount a satelite dish, a chimney mounted noname 8 bay(the one with the 2 adjustable 4 bays) and a AD DB8 a couple of streets over also went up. Yes OTA is growing...it's not our imagination!
recneps77 2011-12-23, 10:02 PM At this new house, my next door neighbour has that 2x4bay one. Noticed it when I first had a viewing of the property.
People are definitely coming (back) around to it. Maybe this 'OTA is a negligible %' stat will die a swift death :)
I had analog cable still hooked up from the previous owners on move in day.
Given the quality of programming I watched that night.. I'm not really missing it!
byebye_cable 2012-01-01, 10:14 PM Hey, a popular configuration (the one Save & Replay recommended for years) for the Scarborough area used to be ganged 4221's (one pointed at Toronto, one pointed at Buffalo, 3' apart, identical coax lengths into a combiner).
Now that CTV and CHCH are on VHF, does anyone know what the this changes to? I thinking it would be the same with 4228's, but curious what everyone thinks. I have a friend who is interested and I want to make sure I get him started in a good direction.
Happy New year to all.
recneps77 2012-01-02, 01:16 PM I see many people with 2x4221's around here, though I had good results with a single 4228 at the old house.
9 shouldn't be a problem, but you're probably going to want a VHF-HI antenna for 11.
I know my noname 4-bay picks up 9 perfectly, even pointing at buff.
When I replace it in the spring, I don't think I'd even need to go to two antennae with the higher transmitting power post-transition.
If you want 11 you're definitely going to want an 8-bay or a proper VHF antenna.
Jase88 2012-01-02, 01:27 PM Just remember that CHCH Hamilton has a pending application to switch to channel 15 UHF with a far greater ERP. You may or may not wish to invest in a VHF antenna at this time for CHCH.
Maury Markowitz 2012-01-02, 07:56 PM When I use the TV's signal strength meter on channel 9 physical, I get a strength of around 39 to 42. This is the same strength I get for most Buffalo stations, which are anything from 35 to 50.
But while the Buffalo stations work fine, my TV refuses to tune in anything on 9. When I dial it in manually, it switches to analog and I get a screen full of snow.
Any ideas?
Jase88 2012-01-02, 10:07 PM ^^^^^
Can you provide us with some information regarding your location and setup?
recneps77 2012-01-03, 06:17 PM My TV usually requires a different channel to be tuned, then will work when I switch back to 9.
Can't explain it, but it works after initially tuning something else. Refuses to work if I just turned it on and it was on 9.
Jase88 2012-01-03, 06:49 PM Maury, have you done a full channel scan? It could be this was last done at a time when your tuner couldn't receive channel 9, thus it's absent from your channel lineup. Many tuners don't allow you to simply tune to a physical channel and receive it, without first being scanned in.
Geo35 2012-01-03, 09:36 PM Hey, a popular configuration (the one Save & Replay recommended for years) for the Scarborough area used to be ganged 4221's (one pointed at Toronto, one pointed at Buffalo, 3' apart, identical coax lengths into a combiner).
Ganged 4221s is now overkill for Scarborough. I think the dealer made the recommendation in the pre transition days when some of the ultra low power TO channels were difficult to recieve. With our relatively small angle between Buffalo and the CN Tower, we are close enough to the CN Tower that a single 4221 aimed at Buffalo is now sufficient to receive the TO stations off the side, CHCH 11 Hamilton notwithstanding (although it was very easy to receive before the move to VHF). As mentioned in this thread, CHCH's appication to move back to UHF with the greater ERP is in the works and once implemented, it will very easliy reappear in Scarborough. I am even aimed at east of Buffalo(Batavia-ION) and still get all the Toronto channels with no problem.
Wayne 2012-01-04, 09:37 AM I don't know that they are overkill - not if you live close to the lake in Southern Scarboro where you can have Toronto and Buffalo orthogonal to each other. My azimuth to the CN tower is 234 and to Buffalo it is about 158 so they are about 80 degrees apart. I have trouble picking up some of the Toronto stations - but I also have some other interference blocking the way to the CN tower.
edit - FYI I live just south of Kingston Rd, just east of Markham Rd.
Maury Markowitz 2012-01-04, 09:34 PM Yes, I run scans fairly often looking for new channels. Also, m TV *does* allow direct tuning to any channel. It wouldn't make a difference in this case though, the physical and virtual channels are the same anyway.
Today, tuning to 09 gets zero signal strength. Fun!
