Check and see if there is a secondary audio stream (SAP or similar button?) and if that works. I was just watching tv up until 1 and the sound worked fine for each.

Technoyd,

Very bizzare...Definitely check it with another TV or try to rescan all channels. I have 3 TV's, none has any issues.

By the way, looks like you are missing 11.x and 36.x channels which could be antenna height related issue.
Yep, bizzare kooguy. I'll play tonight.

I don't have the Hamilton stations because I'm pointed eastward. My other (old) antenna on the roof peak DB4 needs to be re-aimed westward when I get a chance.

I got the DB8 to pickup all the US stations I was missing with the DB4. Most likely I just didn't have the DB4 pointed properly, but it is a big issue to climb up to the roof to adjust it. The new DB8 is easily accessable.

Thanks for the idea, I did give that a try also last night without any change.

I played around last night. No luck. Still no sound on 66.1 & 2.1.

I rescanned the channels. Tried it without the amp connected. Reaimed the antenna. Tried all the different audio settings on the TV, using only the TV speakers. Getting a very good signal, over 80% on each channel.

Couldn't test the channels on my other TV, as it doesn't have a ATSC tuner in it.

I think I may check with Toshiba and see if it is an issue with this specific TV model.

Gives me something to do!

Technoyd,

That's really bizarre...Maybe just get a 22" RCA HD TV from Walmart and test it out. Return it when done.

I hope it is not a Toshiba tuner issue.

Kooguy,

That's a thought. The Toshiba TV model I have is 62HM196.

My PA-18 Amp failed on the weekend. Only had it installed for a few days.

The good news is I after removing it, I still get all the channels I had previously, plus I am able to pickup channels 17-1 to 17-3. So, I will just leave it off, even though I am over 100' of cable. I'll return it for a refund.

I do get occasional drop outs and loss of channels when the weather is acting up. Only on some of the US ones though.

I still don't have audio on 2-1 & 66-1. Don't really care anymore. I've tried everything I can think of and suggestions from others (thanks), nothing has worked at this point.

You're getting pretty much everything now, so you probably won't need the amp.
However, come winter, you might see some reduced signal resulting in drop-offs of some stations. I'd wait and see, though.

Technoyd,

Did you ground your antenna setup (coax/mast)? One DHCer had reported two Winegard pre-amp fried within weeks, not sure it is quality control issue or just bad luck or lighting related.

I don't have a pre-amp (my receptions are good) in my setup but do use a dist-amp for 4 TVs in the house.

As for US channels, bad weather do have some impact on some of them especially the weaker ones like 2.x/49.x/51.x. The Toronto channels should hold on well even during stormy days.

I'm in the GTA.
I have an HDHomeRun installed in my attic. I have a separate CM4221HD connected to each input (no splitters), connected with ~10' of RG6 each.

Works great for the most part, but a few channels are low on signal strength and drop out sometimes with poor weather.

Will a pre-amp help me out at all with this configuration or will it do nothing because of my short cable runs?

Any recommendations?

First of all, is there any way you can get your antennas out of that attic? It is killing off valuable signal.

What is your nearest major street corner?

Geeting it out of the attic is very unlikely. I have a wife who would most likely divorse me.

Street corner is Salem & Taunton in Ajax.

Take her for a drive through old whitby (or Ajax.. I only know my neighbourhood has tons :p) . Afterwards, ask her how many antennas she saw.
Then repeat the drive and show her how you don't notice them at all. ;)

As to your question, a preamp will likely not do much because of the short cable length, as you said.
The problem, I believe, is the HDHR. I don't personally own one, but apparently it's got a very old (but reliable) tuner. A newer tuner might make all of your channels perfect.
Just something to consider.

hdCanuck,

Mounting the Antenna on the roof would likely improve signal.
I mounted mine on my back roof, it is not very visible from the road.
Wife approved solution.

A friend of mine has a tower at the rear of his backyard decorated with climbing plants and birdhouses, and runs the cable to the house. More cable length, but you could gain a stronger signal with the height and direct line of sight.

That is the route I took to. Fortunately, for the first time, my backyard has a steep incline at the back third. Steep enough to be at roof level. Stuck it up near the fence and am getting excellent reception right now.

Of course the winter will likely bring a different story.:D

currently i have a tower in ajax westney/rossland and get everything that i shoudld be expected to get from buffalo and toronto. using a cm4228 pointed at buffalo on a 35ft tower and i get toronto off the fridge.

anyway, next year i'll be moving - the wife says that i'm not putting a tower up on the new house. so i guess i'll be looking at a roof mount if possible (what options are out there?) and what antenna should i look at and i can i hope to have the same/similar results? distance is about the same, but i guess pending the roof mount or whatever i end up with.
thanks

I am at Rossland and Thornton (about 122 m above sea level)
and you are moving to an area that is about 177m.
If you have a good exposure with minimal blockage you should be OK.
I use a DB8 with a CM rotor and Pre Amp and I can pick up everything no problem.

so i guess that's one option to have a post to the back of the house.

i'm wondering if i'll need a pre-amp. i'm not currently using one. db8 is similar in design to my current cm antenna.

Try it without a preamp first and see how it goes. You should be alright, but hard to tell without just going for it :p

might try a similar contraption, use the wall mounts and hopefully get enough extension over the back of the house with the pole like the picture above. then perhaps add the pre-amp later if needed. hopefully it won't be :)

this is awhile away anyway, just wanted to be prepared :)
thanks
