: ON - Vaughan/Richmond Hill//Markham/North of 407 - OTA
Yaamon 2006-12-13, 03:57 PM Hi this a great forum here.I just finished installing a 4221 on my chimney.I installed it using 5' 1 1/4" pole with the ant. clamped to it,it basically sits above the chimney.I pointed it in the general CN Tower direction and wham I get all of the Toronto and Buffalo channels without any tweaking.I'm using a 50' RCA cable and will be trimming about 10' later. The only one I don't get that well is wnyo it comes and goes, right now as I type it's fine.I picked up the ant from Yaamon's shop.I'm enjoying HD on my new Sharp 52"lcd.
Great job, ;) you can check your signal on Nbc and Fox, I would adjust so that they are almost equal. If you need to adjust a little strong swing the antenna a little bit more east of the cn tower.
Last weekend I was at the friend that I did the 4221 with a Samsung T451 around 16th and 9th and Wnyo was only coming in 4-5 bars. Maybe as someone posted today they are receiving a stronger signal. I will try WNYO when I get home tonight.
Ps: Nice Sharp tv. :)
Waxman 2006-12-13, 08:58 PM Hello Everyone.
Let me start out by saying that I think this is a great forum and there is a lot of valuable information here. I am new to the OTA HDTV world. I just broke down and purchased a Sharp 37" HDTV with built in tuners. Believe it or not I am upgrading from a 20" RCA tube TV from about 20 years ago.
I would appreciate some help. First of all, I was wondering if the built in tuners on these tv's are as good or on par with the standalone tuners from Samsung etc.. Second, I live in Uxbridge. I picked up a regular set of rabbit ears from Radio Shack and on the second floor of my house I was able to receive some rather snowy but watchable analog channels. I think it was the A Channel, CBC, global. No digital reception at all. On the first floor I got nothing at all. If I was to buy an outdoor antenna mounted say to the chimney at around 30' high what would my chances of getting HDTV signals and analog signals be. Any help or suggestions would be welcomed as I refuse to pay for cable service in this area as it too expensive and I don't watch enough to warrant the extra cost. I mainly bought the tv for the Blu-Ray player and playstation 3
99gecko 2006-12-13, 09:26 PM Waxman,
Welcome!
I can't comment on the comparison of stb vs built in tuners - I'll leave that for others.
For reception results from your area search this thread:http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=36537
and look for results from thenewdc. He is in Stouffville. You might be a tad far for Buffalo reception.
........Hope I get 20 years out of my TV :)
good luck.
Tom.F.1 2006-12-14, 10:50 AM I knew somebody in uxbridge many years ago who used an OTA antenna on a mast for toronto stations. That was back in the old analog days.
If you think a good antenna is worth it for toronto stations, you'd get the high power ones. City and Sun are low power.
I wouldn't count on the US stations, but you'd probably get the higher powered stations, ABC & CBS, maybe more on good days. You'd need a rotor for that. That far out, reception becomes more iffy, dependant on weather. The more height you have, the better.
Good Luck!
Pahonya 2006-12-19, 09:43 PM Installed CM4228 (thanks to Yaamon) last Saturday. Did it lazy way - on the 2-d floor balcony, 10-feet pole.
Can pickup bunch of Buffalo channels but... have few issues:
Channel 2-2 has no sound
Channel 4 - almost no SD, no HD at all
Channel 43 (all 3 of them) - PBS - daytime 38%, morning - 15%. Almost never can be watched free of pixelation. Was able to watch once @ 11PM only.
Looks like I will have to go on the roof. :o
Yaamon 2006-12-20, 09:19 AM Pahonya yea, looks like you have to mount your antenna on the roof. ;)
Its pretty warm toay and tomorrow, once you gte it higher you should be able to pull in Cbs and Pbs no probs.
Make sure you align for Nbc and Fox.
How long was your cable run ?
Pahonya 2006-12-20, 01:43 PM Strange thing with channel 2-1 missing sound that signal at 70-80%, fine sound in SD 2-2 Weather but ...... no sound in HD 2-1.
Cable is approx 50 feet long, direct into TV, no splitters or other stuff.
Yaamon 2006-12-21, 08:57 PM Pahonya are you getting sound on your 2-1 now ? On the Panny 70-80 is decent signal strength.
If you get sound on 2-2 then it might have been a transmission problem or the tv having problems on 2-1 ?
2-2 is a sub carrier of 2-1 so same signal strength.
sonicDX 2006-12-25, 02:33 PM It's a LG 42LC2D with ATCS tuner .
Now I am really going to buy a 4221 and save the cost of a STB .
Thanks to Yaamon for bring me to this website !;)
I am at Yonge/Stouffville rd . I can see CN tower on my deck and second floor .
Problem is there is a tree 60 feet on the south .
I can mount the 4221 in the attic which is the same height as the tree leaf in summer , or mount it lower on the deck which has no leaf blocking view of CN
tower .
My question is what is the effect of a tree on the HD signal ?
sonicDX 2006-12-25, 02:35 PM BTW ,
This is from the manual :
NTSC-M, ATSC, 64 & 256 QAM
VHF 2 ~ 13, UHF 14 ~ 69,
CATV 1 ~ 135, CADTV 1 ~ 135, DTV 2 ~ 69
Do you guys know if there is un-scrambled HDTV in the cable system ( Aurora cable ) ?;)
intrac 2006-12-25, 02:43 PM You have to aim it around 155 to 160 degrees, which is S.S.E. not south.
Rogers doesn't have any "unscrabled" HDTV only digital which you see on weird channels.
You may be too far for Buffalo, but you will get Toronto HD channels.
Yaamon 2006-12-25, 04:57 PM sonicDX you are welcome.
There is no free unscrambled hd via cable but the LG does have a qam tuner that should allow you to get most digital channels.
If you are using Aurora cable not sure but with Rogers there is free digital with the LG tuners.
Cyclism 2006-12-25, 05:05 PM sonicDX:
According to a previous post, Aurora Cable does have unscrambled HD via QAM of local stations on their service. This was confirmed as early as 2 weeks ago. Try plugging in your cable directly from your wall outlet and scan for QAM and see what you get.
Here is the previous thread, of interest would be Post #2 and #5:

intrac 2007-01-01, 06:48 PM Yaamon,
We had discussed my CM4228 amp, & location issues a few weeks ago, since I had lost most of my OTA.
This past weekend, I decided to take some measurements with my pre-amp in and out to determine if I was really getting overload.
It turns out that I couldn't quite reach the pre-amp. which meant I would have to take the mast down, but when I looked at the antenna, it appears that it may have shifted in high winds we had a few weeks ago. I was able to twist the mast and re-align my antenna.
It was pointing 180 degrees instead of 160 degrees. Here are my readings:
CH. 180 Degrees 160 Degrees
2.1 -- 67% -- 78%
4.1 -- 64% -- 77%
5.1 -- 91% -- 95%
7.1 -- 68% -- 86%
9.1 -- 87% -- 87%
23.1 -- 89% -- 97%
29.1 -- 66% -- 86%
43.1 -- 75% -- 95%
49.1 -- 0% -- 74%
57.1 -- 76% -- 89%
66.1 -- 71% -- 90%
I'm now getting 49.1 which didn't come in at all. All channels are now much more reliable. 29.1 was always pixellating, and 4.1 and 7.1 were giving "no signal" a lot.
Now I won't have to put up with simsubbing.
Yaamon 2007-01-01, 10:26 PM intrac great job on your realignment and signal strength.
If you are receiving Nbc and Fox and especially My Tv your antenna position is dead on.
Glad that you are finally able to receive the channels that you wanted to get. :)
imclumzy 2007-01-08, 10:24 PM I'm in the Markham area near Pacific Mall and Yaamon installed a CM4221 on a 10' tripod & pole on the weekend. No pre-amp and directly to my Samsung ATSC Plasma TV. I'm getting fantastic reception with very strong signals. Thanks a lot Yaamon!

imclumzy 2007-01-09, 12:06 PM Excellent, thanks for the update stampeder.
I'm very happy that I'm getting 29 exclusive channels both DTV and Analogue!
Yaamon 2007-01-09, 12:15 PM imclumzy, you are welcome, now you and your wife can appreciate your Samsung plasma watching prime tv hd ota at its best. :)
You can also invite some friends over for superbowl weekend, you will even get to see the big bucks American $$ ads in HD too. :) No more sim sub ads as I find watching ota US stations now some of the ads in prime time are in HD.
Just tell your friends you will supply the amazing picture, all they just have to bring beer, pizza and wings. :D
imclumzy 2007-01-10, 11:23 AM Anyone else notice that 7.2 has no picture but an excellent signal? Even during primetime. Are there no broadcasts planned for this channel?
