actually.. almost everything since i cant get WNYO(MyTV) no matter what i do and i lose WGRZ(NBC) if its cloudy
Yaamon 2009-05-13, 08:21 AM Your signal on the roof is very strong.
Try a 10 db indoor booster before the splitter that should work as you are down 5db with the passive splitter.
Nice meeting you.
rondyer 2009-05-18, 02:21 PM I have a CM4228 and a CM preamp (7775 I think), but only get CFTO, CBC, CBLFT, and as of 2 days ago OMNI 2. Do you think I should/could do better?

A few things to try...
This may seem counter-intuitive, but try your setup WITHOUT THE PRE-AMP. The CN Tower and Buffalo are close together from your direction. I have a similar situation, just north of Dufferin+Steeles (indoor antenna, 6th floor facing south). I get almost all of the Buffalo stations without a pre-amp. If I try a pre-amp I lose most of the Buffalo stations, due to overloading the tuner by the local stations from the CN Tower.
Check your aim. The antenna should be pointed parallel to Leslie, SSE to Buffalo.
A topo map shows a rise of approximately 20 metres from Leslie+Davis to Wesleyville. You may have to aim the antenna up by 5 or 10 degrees
DdDave 2009-05-19, 12:17 PM rondyer, is the antenna in the attic or outside? Have you checked your tvfool results to see what you should be getting? If you post them I'm sure you will get some additional feedback. As Walter Dnes mentioned, you can double check your aim using the tvfool results and a compass.
thenewdc 2009-05-22, 06:10 PM Can anyone Northeast of Toronto confirm consistent reception of WNYB-DT. I get it about 50% of time, mostly in the evening, overnight and morning hours. I wondering if its my setup or just my distance from their transmitters at 108 miles. Also my antenna is not pointed towards them.
rondyer 2009-05-26, 07:10 PM thenewdc, what antenna/amp are you using? I can't get anything close to 50% of something 108 miles away. When NE of GTA are you?
thenewdc 2009-05-26, 10:19 PM I'm in the Stouffville area which is a great area for reception. I get all Buffalos consistently, even clear reception of WPXJ analog almost always, and Rochester stations quite regular when the weather is warm. WNYB sometimes comes in for several days then nothing for a day or two, then its back again for another few days. I"m using an attic mounted home made SBGH attached to a pre-amp pointed towards Rochester. I have a 2nd SBGH pointed at Buffalo. Both are connected to an A/B Switch. My setup works great. I've never been able to get anything from Erie PA, but sometimes I get WSTM Syracuse on 54 and its 2 sub channels.
rondyer 2009-05-26, 11:52 PM Wow, oh wow thenewdc, that is amazing. Do you have any plans, advice on the SBGH? I would love to get some more channels up here in Newmarket.
Whatsizface 2009-05-27, 12:52 PM I need a list of hardware you would would recommend that I get to replace the crap is that is Rogers HD with PVR.
Any help is appreciated.
stampeder 2009-05-27, 01:11 PM Whatsizface, you should use the Search This Thread tool to the upper right beside Thread Tools and put in your neighbourhood name or local street names as search terms, and if there are results already posted from near where you live you can compare. :)
For all the info you'll need on an OTA PVR see this thread:

tenstu 2009-05-27, 01:17 PM You can also check out the thread for the DTVPal DVR - which is becoming a very popular choice:

I think you would agree it is likely your elevation at play as well.
Your set-up seems to outperform most of us who are significantly closer than you.
If any of your neighbours houses go up for sale, please PM me ;)
cheers
emuu101 2009-05-28, 10:25 AM Hi guys,
Here's what I get in my area.

2-2 WGRZ-W
4-1 CBS WIVB-DT
5-1 CBC CBLT-DT
7-1 ABC WKBW-DT
9-1 CTV CFTO-DT
15-1 SUNTV CKXT-DT
17-1 PBS WNED-DT
17-2 PBS-SD WNED
17-3 WNED-KIDS
23-1 CW WNLO-DT
25-1 CBC-F CBLFT-DT
29-1 FOX WUTV-DT
41-1 GLOBAL CIII-DT
44-1 OMNI.2 CJMT-DT
49-1 MYTV WNYO-DT
57-1 CITYTV CITY-DT
64-1 OMNI.1 CFMT-DT
66-1 SUNTV CKXT-DT
I used to have my CM4228 on the peak of my roof. On the roof, I was having problems getting NBC for a long time. I moved it from the roof and into my attic last summer. Added a CM7777, and now I get NBC without any issues. I got all my equipment from Sensuz (located in Markham). Great guys. I've purchased a lot of stuff from them - including the HDHomeRun. I'm using the HDHomeRun and Vista Media Center as my Home Theatre entertainment hub (PVR, pictures, surfing, etc).
thenewdc 2009-05-30, 09:28 AM 9th line and 16th is just a stones throw from me, but my eleveation is slightly higher than yours. I see you cant receive WNYB on 26. You should check analog ch-51 to see if you can receive WPXJ out of Batavia. I get a strong signal from them. They will go digital on June 12th on channel 23 with 3-subchannels, hoping to get that one. I see you list Sun Tv on ch-15? I'm surprised you get that one because I only recieve WBNF-CA out of Grand Island on ch-15 in analog. I've never gotten Sun on ch-15 in Digital.
Snapfizzle 2009-05-30, 10:33 AM Hello everyone! 1st things 1st, GREAT SITE! Very informative! Keep up the great work! OTA - I don't think I would have gone this route, but after some head-butting with Rogers I have decided to put my toe into the OTA pool and see where that leads me. I am new to this, and have some questions before I go all gungho.
Questions are as follows:
1. I've gone through the Receptions page for my area, and still cannot decide which antenna to go with...Would a CM 4228 be overkill? Should I be looking at the 4221?
2. If I do go for the 4228, is there a way to tell if the unit is 4228 or if it's fake?
3. The house we purchased, there is already a mount for BEV dish from previous owner (front of house). I was thinking of using that mount for the OTA antenna. The height is level with my 2nd story windows lower frame. Would I need to raise it above my roof line?
4. The cable from that BEV install looks like it's RG6 which is already run to my basement, would I need to replace that with RG11? (Do I even need to worry about it?)
5. Grounding: If I do not need to clear my roof (or even if I need to), do I have to look into grounding the antenna? If so, what type of wire and does it matter if I ground on the front or back of the house?
Thanks in advance!
Snap :D
stampeder 2009-05-30, 10:33 AM 9th line and 16th is just a stones throw from meHey, let's give that a test - just listen for the sound of glass breaking! :D
Seriously these last 2 posts are what the Reception threads are all about. Although OTA is very location-specific it is still excellent and extremely helpful to be able to get such fine grained info thanks to all the members who have posted so far and those who add their own info.
cheers
stampeder 2009-05-30, 11:05 AM Snapfizzle, here are some brief answers to your questions:
Use the Search This Thread tool to the upper right beside Thread Tools and try a variety of local street names as search terms so you can see which OTA gear people are successfully using near you
For OTA Gear use reputable dealers and you will not have that problem with clones. See Post #18 in the OTA FAQ (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=41102)
See the OTA Mounts, Towers, Rigging Hardware (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=29559) thread for everything you need to know about mounting an antenna, especially with satellite "J mounts"
RG-6 is the cabling you want so no need for worry
See the Grounding Info & Standards: OTA/Dish/CATV/Telecom (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=62265) thread for everything you need to know about grounding your OTA gear
Snapfizzle 2009-05-30, 01:47 PM Thanks for the prompt response Stampeder!
I'm actually 5min away from Markham Stoffville Hospital. Major interect would be hwy #7 & 9th line.
1. I tried searching for my area, but it pops up with the 9th line in mississauga :(
2. I was going to head to Sal's by kingston rd, that business was listed by someone (forgot which thread, read too many..) as one that sold the 4228 in toronto.
3. I'll take a look again
4. Good! No need to run anything :D
5. Thanks for the link, I'll take a gander.
P.s. My bad for posting in wrong area :P
stampeder 2009-05-30, 03:09 PM I'm not referring to the site's main blue navbar Search tool in my reply #2. Look at the upper right of the top of this thread.
