OK, so what's going on with Global's Paris transmitter then? I had the signal up until yesterday loud and clear(relatively). Why don't I have it now? I'm getting no signal at all on 6.

I was wondering what the best setup would be for me in Brantford.
I am in the process of getting a tower for outside it will be 50+ Ft tall. I am just wondering what the best antenna and preamp would work best for me. I am in the Terrace Hill area near the Brantford hospital. With the only obstrution being some trees. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to run all the steps in this thread: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=125161 so that we can get the right info from you.

Also use the Search This Thread tool to the upper right beside Thread Tools and put in "Brantford" as your search term to see results already posted from where you live so you can compare. :)

Global coming in loud and clear. Signal strength seems lower than TVO but stable. No PSIP.

Another TO station!

BluPuk - got a quick question for you do you have a digital converter box or a newer lcd or plasma tv with a built in digital tuner? because if you don't that might be your problem... other than that i'd say get an antenna and get it outside and you'll for sure be getting those channels your looking for.

Bill: yep, I have both actually for two TV's that are not connected to cable - they both use rabbit ear type antennas with the sole purpose of tuning Global (CIII) channel 6. I don't watch them but my wife does. Anyway, I really don't want to go the outdoor antenna route if I can avoid it, since I only want to get one channel (the Y&R  ). I have a Winegard SS3000 on the way which I'm hoping will solve the issue, but my investigation into "cutting the cable" is pretty much over I think. I've even had trouble getting posts posted here - I haven't quite learned the etiquette it seems ...:) Anyway, up until two days ago I had no problem getting channel 6 - now I can't get it at all. I have my fingers crossed that the Winegard will do the trick...

What are my chances of picking up Global 6.1 from the Paris tower, here in Brantford, with the Channel Master 2020? TV Fool shows me 11.7 miles from the tower. LOS.

Unless I'm somehow mistaken, isn't this antenna only good from 7 and up?

clique of one - i would think you should catch it easily, with any type of vhf antenna, i've got some antique vhf antenna and i can catch it at 100% when i point it right at it and i still get 65% signal when it's pointed at buffalo. So from my experience i'd say it should work fine...

According to Channel Master the 2020 is only good for channel 7 and up. I don't understand how antennas work so maybe Bill is right though.

The CM2020 is a VHF-HI/UHF antenna. I would not normally expect a CM2020 to get VHF-LO signals (i.e. channel 6) unless it is located extremely closely to the channel 6 station (< 5 km). If you think that applies (11-12 km is iffy) then test with it but hopefully you can get your money back if it isn't suitable.

Keep in mind that channels 6 and 7 are not side-by-side on the frequency spectrum - there is quite a large gap between them, so different sizes of antenna are required. You can see a table of comparison values regarding TV channels in Post #19 of the OTA FAQ (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=837957&postcount=19) which shows that the lower the channel number, the bigger the antenna must be.

If it works properly for you on channel 6 let us know as it would be a great solution for some Brantford folks in certain areas.

just got home from my parents place they live in burford just outside of brantford here's the tv fool
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d9e74fcfc6834d9

and they have an RV antenna on there trailer it's a Winegard RV-3095 Sensar III Amplified Directional antenna and i thought i'd try out my digital converter box see if he could catch 6.1 out of paris. I did a channel scan and it found one channel.... 11.1 out of hamilton, i was alittle surprised at that 33.6 miles away i was wondering why it didn't get 6.1, then i rotated the antenna a bit and low and behold 6.1 came in at about 25-27db on the convter box, so then i wondered well why didn't 28.1 come in then since there off the same tower, so i fine tuned the rotor and was able to just pull it in. So my conculsion is that the antenna they have is definatly optomized for vhf, not uhf and i confirmed this on there website because now they are advertising the same antenna as my parents have but now they have an upgrade that you can do to give you a 100% gain in uhf reception

Sounds like a case of buyer beware!

The Winegard RV-3095 Sensar antenna line was always advertised as being great UHF/VHF RV antennas with a 50 mile range. Suddenly by their own admission their antenna is inferior to UHF signals and they now they advertise that you'll need an 'add-on' to get decent UHF reception?

Also, as with most antenna marketing, Winegard now calls their antennas HDTV antennas? What is an HD, DTV, HDTV antenna? High Definition HDTV has to do with the quality of the television's display, with little if nothing to do with the antenna's reception capability.

Regarding your trials to get 6.1 etc,... yes that Winegard antenna is very directional when mounted on the surface of a camper, but you'll find it will perform quite differently with a seemingly wider beamwidth at a greater heights above ground level.

For the cost of that Winegard add-on, it would be less complicated to look around at other RV antennas and you would probably be further ahead just to buy a better antenna capable of UHF/VHF reception.

Just got back today and now have two digital Globals- 41.1 (RF 65.1) which is still locking in at 10% on the Sammy, but flakes daily on the LG, and then the new flamethrower (100% signal)- 41.1 (RF)- wife will be much pleased- hello digital YnR. So now the count is up to 25 digital channels; hopefully more with CKCO, and maybe a few others- CKVR, WBBZ...

OK guys, I'm getting more and more confused - I throw myself on your mercy ;). I am simply trying to get one channel on an antenna after the switch to digital - Global. Of course I don't want to go to all the trouble and expense of mounting an outdoor, rooftop antenna to get one channel. I'm trying to figure out if I can use some kind of an indoor set-up, but it looks less and less likely now :(. Here is my tvfool map:

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d9e74f273b157b9

As you can see, the "old" Global transmitter in Paris/Ayr has disappeared from my map and all that's left is 65 (41.1) at 50+ miles! Any suggestions? I was thinking a ClearStream2 mounted on a small tripod might not be too bad. Any suggestions gratefully received.

BluPuk,
Did you rescan or autoprogram your digital tuner/HDTV after Global switched to digital on channel 6? My Samsung TV would not tune Global's digital signal on channel 41 or TVO's digital signal on 19 using any manual procedure I tried. The set just won't recognise a digital signal on a channel that was previous used by an analog station. I had to run the auto-program function from the menu to fix the problem.

Hi BluPuk -- Some stores offer easy returns for antenna equipment, knowing that results can be so dependent on many factors and you never know for sure until you give it a try (especially with indoor setups). So go shopping and give something a go. I'm having good results with an indoor amplified Terk. With the recent addition of Global digital from Toronto, I'm up to 18 channels. I'm of a similar approach that I don't want to go to the trouble of a outdoor or attic install if it's not necessary. The store where I bought has a 30 day no-questions return policy for antenna equipment. Good luck.

BluPuk,

CIII-DT is indeed on the Post Transition list [the PT listing is in the pending application] and it is quite strong for your location. CIII-DT 6.1 is showing at 55+NM and it's only 11 miles away from you.

Listen to what people are saying. I'm assuming that you do indeed have an ATSC [digital] tuner.
Aim your antenna properly, and do a 'COMPLETE NEW AUTO SCAN'! Outdoor antennas is always best, but that channel should be knockin on your door.:p

Yah, thanks all, I was thinking exactly that I should be getting Global loud and clear, but I'm not for some unknown reason. The only digital channel get is TVO in HD. I got my Winegard SS3000 today, plugged it in and got no more signal (and NO Global) than I get with the crappy RCA CANT501 I've had for 7 or 8 years! I pointed it in every direction possible and did several re-scans, both upstairs and down here with no noticeable effect. I even put it on a stand, and sat it outside on a window sill and no luck. The neighbours must think I'm nuts.
Is there any kind of a "signal meter" I can get to test this spot out? My real aim is to get an HD signal to my eyetv one so I can get HD CBC and watch high def hockey games on my iMac. I'm thinking I'm going to have to give up on that idea. What a shame - the HD signal from the one digital channel channel I do get is much better than the one I get over cable.
Anyone have any experience with going from an indoor antenna to an outdoor one? How much of an improvement could I expect to see? Man I'm getting discouraged :(
