Twilight Cowboy 2005-09-25, 08:41 AM I wouldn't want to bet that Erie ATSC stations come consistantly in Woodstock. I am 80 miles from Detroit ATSC stations which are at 1M watts and I cannot receive them 24/7/365 . I also have the Delhi 60 foot tower.
What must be realized is that signals travel farther distances over water. In Mississauga watching Buffalo channels, 90% or more of the signal travel is over water. The same cannot be said for Woodstock looking at Erie.
rob50312 2005-09-25, 10:17 AM The height of tower and height above sea level of the towers will determine the reliable range and antenna height at reception.Going over water as flat definitely will help.Buffalo and Erie have towers are on high ground in the hills.Buffalo south towers were installed when tv begun to serve cities of Rochester,Erie,Toronto before they had their own stations.Detriot towers are on low ground reducing their range in comparision.
Steve Gyurki 2005-09-26, 10:22 AM I think that I will plug back in the rotor and try to point the antenna at Buffalo when I get home. I'll let you know how I make out. There are more trees in line with Buffalo but we have a clear line of sight to Buffalo. Thought with Erie being closer it would be easier to receive. But did not realize they were not at full power.
Thanks again,
Steve
P.S. I work in T'Burg and know it is not a problem to pick up ATSC Erie stations with an outdoor antenna.
:D
alebowgm 2005-09-30, 03:11 AM Has anyone in the GTA been able to pull in Erie 50?
And while it is the same HD feed, the sub channels may be different...

Yaamon 2005-10-11, 01:00 PM Great results tricky I think if you rotate your antenna almost dead south you might even get Erie.
You should be able to get them as they are right across the lake.
Those stations you listed that are weak are from Detroit, Rochester, and Pittsburgh. Its amazing what your 60' tower and height does for the signal.
tricky 2005-10-11, 07:26 PM I am amazed what the height does for the analog signals 2,4 and 7 from Buffalo.
WQLN is from Erie and I get that without problems.
kbanse 2005-11-15, 11:27 AM I have a samsung sirt351 and I'm trying to get it set up. This is what I have so far.
Location: Brantford: 43.13 North 80.2 West approximately
Distance from Towers: Toronto 55.5 miles, Buffalo Grand Island 67.8 miles
Supposedly there is also a weak tower in Hamilton which is about 20 miles away.
Here are my questions:
1. Has anyone in Brantford managed to setup a successful OTA reception (I saw the guy that is 11 miles south but I am in the city so want to know if it can be done)
2. If so, what antenna would be best. I'm looking at the Channel Master 4228.
3. Any suggestions on setup, preamps etc since I'm fairly new to this.
Thanks
Yaamon 2005-11-15, 11:48 AM From your location I would recommend that you buy a 4228 and a 9521 rotor.
The angles are too great you are the tip of a triangle and the other ends are Toronto and Buffalo.
Make sure the antenna has a good clear view towards Toronto and Buffalo.
If your cable run is not too long less than 60' you might not need a preamp. Try this setup wihtout a preamp and if you find that on the Samsung the signals are half way then a preamp would mostly likely improve your signal.
Good luck.
kbanse 2005-11-16, 01:03 PM From what I've read, I'll probably need a preamp as well.
So is the design of the Channel Master 4228 better than something like a Channel Master 4248?
Which of the two do you suspect would get the best reception from Buffalo (70 miles) plus pre amp.
Yaamon 2005-11-16, 01:21 PM kbanse on Channel master web site the 4248 is only rated for 45 miles like the 4221, the 4228 is rated for 60 miles.
http://www.channelmaster.com/home.htm
With a 4221 in the Toronto/gta with a clear view its able to pickup all the stations from Buffalo.
So yes the 4248 should work since its rated the same as a 4221.
Aaron 2005-11-16, 05:55 PM kbanse,I am also in Brantford, currently trying to get set up for ota.Where are you purchasing your antenae from and for how much.
Aaron
kbanse 2005-11-16, 11:19 PM aaron, haven't tracked down a dealer yet but I have a lead on someone in Cambridge that sells channel master if that is what I go with.
In the US, I've seen antenna for $60, preamps and rotors for about the same.
There is also some on ebay and one guy is about half an hour over the border in lockport.
I'll let you know if I find anything, Cambridge may be the place
What setup are you looking for?
stampeder 2005-11-17, 02:11 AM kbanse, Aaron, and tricky, I've moved your posts about purchasing equipment to the thread shown below, where you'll find lots of great info on that topic rather than have to do a lot of digging yourselves:

Yaamon 2005-12-22, 12:55 PM tricky what about Erie :) with your rotor setup.
If you can get Buffalo you can get Erie across the lake. :)
tricky 2005-12-22, 02:08 PM WQLN is from Erie,
Yes I also get 24-1 WJET but it is only 50-60% signal
I thought that was on the list I shall edit the list :)

cdncablmonkey 2006-01-16, 10:00 PM Hey I just started reading and messing around..I am located just outside of Jarvis, I picked up a used Motorola HDT 100 on ebay and hooked it up to my old antenna on a 30 ft tower still using old Rg59 that was original 80's install.
I am getting these channels intermtently(pixalization depending on weather due to crappy antenna)

I am planning on rewiring with RG 11 to my fuse panel
I have to relocate my tower as it is stuck in trees and the antenna has dropped several elements over the years and the rotor mount is damaged so I can't adjust now
I have talked to the the local antenna guys and they are trying to sell me a wade 2900 for around $200..
I have read on this forum that most swear by the Channel master 4228 anyone in Haldimand have experience with this unit? where can I get it locally?
