: I want new English Language Channels!
2005-12-30, 09:24 PM
The new crop of channels the CRTC has released to BEV cater to French Speaking and Internation Channel fans.
Does anyone know if and when we will get new English Language channels?

Just for clarification docrobot, are you saying that there is a link between how many international-language stations are being added in this latest round and the fact that English language ones are not? Please explain. Oh and you forgot to say which English-language channels you want.

No relation, agenda, or other alignment of the planets here, just no US Channels that we all want on this batch of CRTC approved channels. I want all the usual suspects; HBO, Showtime, Mark Cuban's HD Net, ESPN 1 & 2, etc.
Any word as to where or when we get more US channels?
In order for a non-Canadian service to be added to the list of eligible services to be distributed in Canada, a canadian service provider (ex Rogers) or the CAB has to file an application, proving that there is demand for the service,a copy of the schedule,a description of the service and evidence that it will not be competitive with any exitsting Canadian service. Its up the the CRTC from there.

...evidence that it will not be competitive with any exitsting Canadian service...
But we want choice and variety; MTV from the US, SciFi Channel, HBO, ESPN 1 & 2...
IMHO, I don't think existing channels should have exclusives, especially when they are Cloned versions of original American channels to begin with! (Much Music, Space, Show Case...)

We will NEVER get HBO, ShowTime or ESPN in Canada as there are already equivalent channels in Canada.
I can't believe people still bitch and complain about this for the millionth time.

True, disappointing but true. The channels that make it up here are usually modified for "can con anyways" ....eg our MTV and MTV 2 were NOT the same as the ones in the states, even with the same name.

SciFi Channel would be really nice. Space couldn't even compete with SciFi. :(
I'm sick of Space picking up SciFi originals a year late. But I guess that's what BitTorrent is for.

GOLTV would be nice!!
What's taking them so long to add it???

I'm expressing my desire for original American programming, sorry if it sounds like whining to you Pap... :P
With just the Canadian Market for revenue, our Cloned Channels simply can't compete with US Market Originals. Why do we have to make do with less when flag waving Canadian Government Workers can control our programming?
We should vote to remove the CTRC, and open the TV and Radio Markets...
(No, Im not serious! LOL)

I'm not sure why you would want to eliminate the CTRC (http://www.ctrc.saci.org/home.cfm) or what exactly that has to do with radio and tv, but my mom always said sitting too close to the tv would cause cancer...

The advent of the HTPC and online services will dwindle the strangle hold that the CRTC has over what we watch.
There are a couple of US only online services that are defeatable by spoofing an IP and changing your regional settings.
THis simplicity will point out that their attempts are futile and a change in policy is in order.

dude, you completely missed the point of my post which was mocking someone's rant when they completely misspelt what they were talking about.
i realize that many feel the crtc is past it's prime and i do agree that there needs to besome loosening of the regulations by the crtc.
nem, who says "whew" that's a touchy subject
