: Best Movie of 2005?
It's that time of year.
Feel free to post links to any critics top 10 list here for others to view but the question is "What, in your opinion, was the best movie of 2005 and why?"
Please limit movies to those RELEASED in 2005!
beanagee1 2005-12-30, 11:12 AM The best site, in my opinion, for lists and ratings for entertainmnet materials and books is www.metacritic.com
Nels Stewart 2005-12-30, 11:29 AM I still haven't had a chance to see some of the late releases like Syriana, Chronicles of Narnia, Munich. My top picks of what I did see:
• North Country: Well acted, again Charleze Theron is able to lose herself, and her beauty, in a gritty, working-class character. Well-crafted, well-told story that got my blood boiling as I watched it, and made for some good post-viewing conversations.
• Cinderella Man: I'm not usually a fan of Ron Howard's safe, predictible filmmaking but I really enjoyed this movie. Beautifully crafted, nicely filmed, well-choreographed boxing scenes, compelling story.
• Shopgirl: I'm a sucker for Claire Danes, but I was really swept away by this sweet little romance story of her dueling affections for a much older sugardaddy, Steve Martin, and a bumbling slacker graphic artist, Jason Schwarzman. Beautifully photographed.
• Capote: This movie really pulled me in as I watched this vain little main manipulate everyone around him so he could complete his book, In Cold Blood.
My one wish for 2006 would be for directors to be a little more ruthless in the editing room; I mean, 3+ hours for King Kong is just insane -- the seasons changed while I was in the theatre watching that, for crying out loud!
james99 2005-12-30, 11:38 AM Added a poll, based upon early Oscar favourites.
GORD HARRIS 2005-12-30, 11:56 AM I enjoyed Cinderella Man i am a fan of sports movies in general and also a fan of the sweet science. The boxing scenes were very realistic and the story line was top notch,i also enjoyed I walk the line i saw Cash way back in the 70`s in Toronto it brought back some memories.
supervij 2005-12-30, 12:17 PM I didn't see all of these movies, so I'm unqualified to really say. My choice is probably an unpopular one, but I would have voted for Serenity. I saw it three times at the cinema, and twice already on DVD. And of course, I've seen the whole Firefly series at least a few times as well. It certainly won't garner any Oscar nominations, and it didn't do well at the box office cos it didn't have any big name stars and cos it's based on a TV show that had no decent advertising behind it, but it's a big shiny movie that deserved more audience. Of the list provided, I've seen a few, and give my nods to Crash and Cinderella Man. They were both outstanding movies that stayed with me long after the movies ended.
cheers,
supervij
heybirder 2005-12-30, 01:00 PM I voted for Memoirs of a Geisha but I also really enjoyed Syriana. I thought Memoirs was a beatiful movie although knowing the history or reading the book would help make the story more understandable.
Syriana was a really interesting story and Clooney was very good in it. If you liked Traffic, Syriana would be worth checking out.
cyclo 2005-12-30, 04:58 PM No Serenity, Batman Begins, nor Sin City in the options? These were voted the top 3 for 2005 on a poll conducted by the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/film2005/filmofyear_2005.shtml).
johnp'in'bc 2005-12-30, 07:12 PM Haven't seen a one!! But I do have 'Cinderella Man' (still unopened) to watch 'one of these days', and from what I've read, I expect/hope to enjoy it. No real desire to see any of the others that are listed.
Dog Byte 2006-01-01, 05:17 PM I didn't see all of these movies, so I'm unqualified to really say.I saw NONE of those movies. So I'm ultra-unqualified to opine.
I did buy Serenity on it's first day so that gets my vote.
YvonG4 2006-01-02, 07:11 PM where's harry potter?
I haven't many new movies in 2005, but Happy Potter was great.
james99 2006-01-02, 11:18 PM Only movies that are likely to be nominated for the best picture Oscar are listed. Which means 15 won't be.
A few of these movies are on DVD now with others coming out soon. If these movies are not household names now, they will be within the next 8 weeks.
skypilot 2006-01-03, 12:31 PM "Grizzly Man" was my favourite movie of 2005. Outstanding and incredibly gripping.

I just watched this documentary the other day and thought it was excellent and very well done.
biglyle 2006-01-03, 12:35 PM I had to go with Syriana.
I just loved this film. The acting was superb, the story was great and topic is of great interest. Best film I have seen in a few years.
Skuce 2006-01-11, 09:38 PM I did buy Serenity on it's first day so that gets my vote.
I'll 2nd a vote for that!!
bembol 2006-01-15, 04:50 AM Paul Haggis' CRASH...!!!
bobguy 2006-02-02, 09:57 AM Paul Haggis' CRASH...!!!
Got my vote...Didn't see Cinderella Man, but Crash was the best move I've seen since "Mystic River"
GORD HARRIS 2006-02-02, 06:10 PM I see by the poll results the 40 YOV is the best of 05,geez my wife rented that dud i think it was supposed to be a comedy, the only part of the movie i liked is when the old Indian guy was on the screen, but i guess that is why Hollywood curns out these turds people lapp them up.
To each is own i guess but it won`t be going into my collection.
