Are most modern power supplies the same chassis? I mean mounting holes, connectors etc?
My compaq sr 1475 only came w a 250w supply, and when installing my new vid card ATI Radeon XL700 pro, it recommends a 300w supply. My retired athlon xp has a 300w powersupply that I replaced a year ago. Would it fit?
the Compaq seems to be running fine with the new vid card ,even on the 250w supply. Just don't want to have a meltdown. Too lazy to do the transplant unless it's a sure thing. Are all motherboard power connectors univeral?
Thanks,

To my knowledge, all ATX power supplies should have the same mounting hole locations.
All ATX power connectors are the same, however some ATX power supplies include a secondary 4-pin power supply connector that is used for boards with Intel P4 CPUs.
If your Compaq PC has an Intel P4 CPU, check to see if there are 2 power leads going to the board, and then verify that the power supply from your retired Athlon.
BTW - The 4-pin connector looks like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/Full/34109i0.jpg

The compaq is a socket 754 athlon 64 3400+.... I'm thinking it'll be 99.99% compatible and hopefully just a straight swap.

There are current two types of PSU's in general use
The ATX and the mATX
Most ATX start at 300w +. The size of the PSU is usually 5.9"(L) x 6.4"(W) x 3.4"(H) or 15cm(L) x 16 cm(W) x 8.6 cm(H). The width may vary.
The mATX is a smaller PSU.
I suspect you have an mATX unit

Just a Followup
- both were ATX powersupplies.
- the 'new'one in my retired Athlon xp system was an Orion XP400 350Watt Power Supply (ATX)
- fit right in to the compaq case... a teeny bit noisier (has 2 fans), but 100w more power available.
- the 250w booted up my old Athlon just fine.... selling the basic carcass to cousin's husband for their 8yo kid for $100

My B-I-L's now ex-partner had a PS failure a few months ago. I tried to help her by taking an old PS from one of her old PCs. Same form factor (ATX) but that one had different connectors for the MB than the one is her now 4 y.o. HP (using an Asus MB). A new PS from Future Shop (not much choice where she was) fit right in.
