: 360' scratching game discs
Petee_C 2005-12-21, 09:19 AM Beware,
**DO NOT MOVE YOUR XBOX 360 WITH THE DISC RUNNING INSIDE**
I had to move my 360 because the AV cable came loose, and a rented COD2 disc was inside. Then came a horrible screetching sound.
I continued playing a few more single player missions, but the 360 wouldn't load past a certain level. I removed the disc and found circular scratches in a ring, fairly deep in the disc.
I called Blockbuster to tell them that I had a scratched disc and couldnt play past a certain level. They asked me to bring it back and gave me a store credit for a future rental.
Please be careful folks. (The original xbox never game me any problems when switching cables etc. The design of the 360 tray is different)
googling came up with this:

This is not exactly rocket science. You risk damaging any piece of equipment or the software on it if you move it while it's on/working.
Turn off any equipment before moving. DVRs can have their HDD spinning even when "off" (which is really standby), therefore they should be unplugged before moving.
Equipment that is designed for use while moving is different (like a portable CD player). It has the appropriate design requirements, damping, etc.
Joxer 2005-12-21, 09:31 AM MS even has a program to replace a scratched disk - but only with PD0. This suggests (as does the frequency of the reports of scratched media) that this device is a LOT more susceptible to this sort of thing. Pete, was the box horizontal like the original xbox or vertical?

The machine was horizontal, and I just picked up the corner of it to give the AV cable a reset in the socket. I may have raised the machine 30 degrees max to remove some cables underneath it....
Never had a problem with the original xbox.
I ended up purchasing COD2 from EB games, and bought the 1 yr scratch warranty on it for $3.
57: HDD have their platters/discs fastenned to the spindle and are less susceptable I would thing to slight movement, or thus is reported in the forum mentioned in above link.
bucketo 2005-12-21, 10:43 AM should never move any electronic equipment in your home video setup that has moving parts while its on... The 360 manual even says to not do it...
I'm not trying to call you out on it, just saying with the complexity of electronics these days, they should stay motionless when on...

Petee_C 2005-12-21, 10:48 AM manual?
- what manual?
- good advice nonetheless
this is a console that will have kids around it. it shouldn't be this susceptible to damage. picking it up and shaking it, yeah maybe that might cause damage. tilting it 30° or changing from vert to horizontal should not.
as for moving parts, my pc is under my desk and gets kicked all the time. it works great though. the cdrom drives in there don't eat cds like that.
i think this is poor designing on microsoft's part however i'm certain it'll be fixed in sp2.
Joxer 2005-12-21, 04:59 PM I've been dying to try out the drop protection on my T43 laptop too! At least there's a cool app you can use to show exactly how you are shaking and tilting your laptop. A couple of taps will lock down the drive.
StreetPreacher 2005-12-22, 10:47 AM What method does the 360 use to secure the disks in the tray?
All of my laptop drives have had a little spindle that you push the disk over to secure it, and I bet I could do baton twirls with this thing and not damage a disk.
Since the 360 was designed to work vertically I assumed that they would have employed a similar method for securing the disk. Is this not the case??

Sadly for $499 cdn. u get a really flimsy disc tray.
There is a mod to dampen the disc movement with rubber pads, but the instructions aren't the best, and it will void your 90 day warranty.
