Googe, you might want to read this quote from a Shaw employee:

"What you don't understand is that Shaw isn't controlling how compressed the images are. We get the feeds and do not alter them. Discovery HD and PBS HD look better than the other HD channels because they are sending them to us at a higher bitrate than say CBS HD or Fox HD. There is nothing we can do to improve the bitrate on the major networks when they are the ones who are compressing the image and sending it to us that way."

Basic cable will get you HD.
The HD Plus will cost you $9/month starting January.
Movie Central will cost extra.

From what I was told, this is untrue. If you have basic cable, you will NOT get (after free preview) TSNHD, AEHD, DISCHD, MCHD even if you pay the extra $9!! This is because my CSR told me that you only get those IF you have that particular tier. I told her that was CRAP. I pay for basic cable, because I don't watch all that other stuff, but I WOULD pay $9 for the HD content, but I'm not shelling out another $$ for more tiers just to get the other HD programming.

I told him I would switch, unless they switch that policy.

Now you have me confused -

If I have cable with all 3 tiers, do I get all the HD channels with no extra charge? Or do I have to pay $9 for the HD Plus package just the same?

For now you get them all, but after the New Year, you'll get:

PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS, CBC and Fox included, and you will have to pay $9/mo to get the rest of them.

Edit: that might be slightly different in Wpg.

It will not matter if you switch providers. All of the cable/satellite providers are doing this. You have to subscribe to the tiers that all the SD networks are in plus pay for the HD version on top of it.

It's still crap. They will lose lots of customers like me who only have basic cable, but are willing to pay for HD because of the quality of picture. For those of you paying for top tiers already $9 isn't a huge hit, but for basic cablers, its $9 plus $$ for other tiers. That's too much for me. I'm just a poor schmuck.

So in essence we pay for the same channel twice..........................where's the CRTC in all of this??????

Yes, of course, where's the CRTC....

I'm hoping that people asking for CRTC intervention in this matter (and others) remember who the "enemy" is. CRTC gets bashed all the time (especially in Shawland - read wild wild anti Ottawa West).

The CRTC has helped make Shaw HD better before, and if need be, they will again, this time. It's Jim Shaw's ambition to take over the world we should be upset about with those price increases and questionable charges.

Even if you are not a poor schmuck, $9 a month for 4 extra channels isnt that impressive. I'm sticking with the basic HD package until more channels are added in HD. For now I'll watch my TSN and Sportsnet in digital SD.

It might by Shaw's ambition but somebody else will already have done it two years before they even try to make their move.

You mean you can't just pay the $9 for the HD plus, and have basic?

Hi,

Did any of you in Vancouver receiving TSN HD (309) signal without subscribing to channel 30 TSN?

I got the channel 308 signal (Vancouver downtown) without the channel 30 signal since 15Sep06 :D . So far can only validate from my colleagues that they DO not yet to receive the 308 signal with the basic package (channel 2-28). They are staying in North Van and Port Coquitlam.

I just got this off the SHAW web site:

"HDTV Programming on Shaw:
Shaw continues to expand its lineup with great HD programming from a variety of popular networks. We recently introduced the HD Plus Package* and continue to provide free HD service to Digital TV customers with HD Terminals with our new HD Basic Package*.
— Free Preview until September 26*"

Anyone else hear or see something about this? - I thought the Free Preview was until the end of the year?

How is a new Shaw customer defined? I have been with Shaw for 8 years. But I have only got my Shaw 6416 for 2 weeks.

Also, the HD Plus package is not available in all markets at this time. I was told by Sept 21, it would be available in Nanaimo. When the channels didn't appear on my service after having my account noted that I want them activated on the release date, and after placing a call to Shaw. I was informed there is no timeline for the release of these channels in Nanaimo, the Sept 21 date was for Victoria. Why can't Shaw release everything to evyerone in every market when they want it? I can't wait for Telus TV
