: Brokeback Mountain
Coasterdon 2005-12-19, 08:25 PM Saw this on the weekend. I thought it was excellent. Great acting and very sad. Jake and Heath should get kudos for having the balls to do this film.
I saw it in downtown Toronto because I knew it would be a sympathetic crowd. I would never see something like that at a suburban cineplex. I'm sure there would be catcalling from yahoos during the movie and I wouldn't feel comfortable in that environment. Do straight people have to worry like that when they go to see Romeo and Juliet? No.
JesseJ 2005-12-19, 08:27 PM I don't think alot of people that are afraid of the 'lifestyle' shall we say will be seeing this movie. I think you could see it anywhere and not be afraid of the movie being ruined.
Bud Bray 2006-01-04, 07:15 PM I've seen it twice in Toronto, mind you the crowd was pretty much one sided with a few breeders thrown in for good measure. Didn't hear any snickers, but then they'd probably be beaten to death! Can't see it playing in Hamilton. Too bad it's STILL promoted as the "GAY cowboy" movie. Cutting itself off from a lot of people who would probably see it for what it REALLY is...a good movie.
Battscrew 2006-01-04, 08:05 PM Probably not in Calgary either
Cyclism 2006-01-10, 11:30 AM I saw it, and was moved by the story and did not get "icked out" at all, and I have an unblemished history of heterosexuality.
The one thing I couldn't stop giggling about was that Heath Ledger's character was named Ennis.
Sheesh. Why not just call him "man-c*nt"?
I can't find the link, but apparently a lot of people are upset with Gene Shalit's review of the movie.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning. Why would these yahoos from the burbs even bother going? It's no secret what the movie is about. I highly doubt any "yahoo" would waste that much money just to go to a movie and yell catcalls.
Coasterdon 2006-01-10, 04:44 PM Easy. Some guys girlfriend drags him to see it. Girls do it too. I have been to a movie where there was a male on male kiss and heard the moans and groans.
Bud Bray 2006-01-13, 11:11 AM Any rumors of DVD release dates yet?
sharkman 2006-01-15, 10:55 AM I haven't bothered to see it because I tend to shy away from movies with an unbelievable story line. Come on, two cowboys in love? The chances of that happenin' are mighty slim. The critics seem to be in love with it though.
"Come on, two cowboys in love? The chances of that happenin' are mighty slim."
Boy, your stereotypical image of cowboys is right up there where our culture wants it -- you've fallen for it hook, line and sinker!! That movie is made for exactly people like you!!! Check out gay rodeos -- there are lots of them. Many cowboys are gay. Most people just don't want to believe it.
(There is a slim chance you meant your post as amusing sarcasm. But it appeared to be serious which is the way I took it.)
sharkman 2006-01-15, 12:45 PM No, I was being serious, not sarcastic. I know the cowboy "image" has been popular among gays since before the Village People, but real cowboys punching cows (not actually hitting them, it's a cowboy term) are the kind I was refering to. Anything is possible I suppose, but it would have been much more likely to have two lawyers or CEOs in love. It's the movie industry mindset to pick the most unlikely pairing for marketing and dramatic effect. Box office mojo says that Brokeback has only done $26 million so far. Not a success by any standard.

Also, I read the above comments on the name Ennis being more than coincidental. How about broke back? Pretty close to bare back, another gay reference.

Um, that's the total from playing in LIMITED release. The first week was 69 theatres, now it's up to 683 theatres and averaging $3367 per theatre/day. Maybe when you throw out stats, you should include ALL the information.
And it's STILL in the top ten!
james99 2006-01-15, 09:57 PM Many of the movies that get nominated for Best Picture don't do well at the box office.
bobbyhollywood 2006-01-15, 11:01 PM Brokeback is going on a slow rollout pattern in order to be at maximum exposure at Oscar time. It's the same strategy that was used last year for Million Dollar Baby. It will have no trouble grossing at least $65 million given the numbers achieved so far and the fact that adult movies like this play out much slower than the wide release blockbusters. Even if the movie suddenly disappeared from screens this week it would not be considered a failure considering it's cost.
Hamilton and Burlington get the movie Friday Jan 27.
Coasterdon 2006-01-16, 08:56 AM Sharkman There are lot's of gay cowbiys, and cops, and firemen, etc etc etc. There is probably no walk of life without gay men. There are gay dude ranches in the texas.
