: Can I run 3100, 4100 (HD) and 5800 without SW44?

Hi,

I'm a newbie so I hope I'm posting this question in the right spot.

I have a BEV 3100 and 5800 receiver and recently purchased a BEV 4100 HD receiver and upgraded dish. I have aligned the new dish and am receiving signals from both BEV 91 and 82 satelites. I am attempting to use all three receivers without purchasing an SW44 switch and have had "moderate" success.

Here's what I've configured...

I picked up a DLNB multi switch (Recoton DSV95 2in 4out) from Princess Auto and have connected the two cables from the BEV 91 DLNB to the switch inputs. Next I took two of the multi switch outputs and fed them directly to my 3100 and 5800 receivers which works fine. I've taken the third multi switch output and plugged it in to the SW21 switch that came with my 4100 HD upgrade package. I took one of the BEV 82 DLNB feeds and plugged it in to the other input on the SW21. The output of the the SW21 goes directly to my 4100 receiver and I am able to receive all HD channels. However, I am only able to receive limited number of channels from BEV 91 on my 4100. If I scroll through non HD channels some work while others bring up "Error 002" followed by a message indicating the receiver is trying to connect to transponders for that particular channel. The HD channels work fine though. When I run "Check Switch" on the 4100 I receive the following...

"SW21 Switch..."
82 82 x 91
odd even x even

Configuring an SW44 would be difficult because I would need to install it outside and would also require power.

Is it possible to tweak what I've done to make it work for all channels or is the SW44 my only option ?

robm, your post is confusing so I'm not sure what you're doing but to get more than 2 tuners up and running properly, you'll need a multiswitch. (and remember splitting increases the liklihood that you'll have reception problems and be unable for the receiver to communicate with the LNB)

your better off splitting 82 line before it goes into the 2x4 multi-switch. The split off end would go to the sw21, along with the 91 line.

4100 is NOT a HD receiver.

If you want HD you'll need to look into getting a 6100. The 4100 is just the basic model that replaced the 3100.

What you are doing will work in theory but may not be working properly for a number of reasons. You could have a bad SW21 or SW24, bad cable between the SW21 and SW24, or the 6100 (4100?) receiver may just be incompatible with the switches you are using or this configuration. Non-powered switches are less reliable than powered switches such as the SW44. You concerns about powering the SW44 are irrelevant. There is no need to run power outside. The SW44 is powered by the coax on output 1 and a power inserter located inside. I suggest you return the SW24 and SW21 and get a SW44. The SW44 will be just as cheap in the long run, simpler to hook up, more reliable and will work better with 2 LNBs and newer receivers such as the 6100 or 9200.

...my mistake, I have a BEV 6100 HD receiver (not 4100).

By inputting the two 91 DLNB feeds into the 2x4 switch I am able to split the signal into four, one to the 3100, one to the 5800, one to the SW21 switch and one spare. I then combine one feed from my 82 DLNB into the other half of the SW21 switch and send the combined signal to my 6100. The problem is I seem to be missing half the channel from sat 91 and receive the mesage "Error 002".

Keep in mind; you are using switches; not cable splitters.

To tune into TSN, for example, your receiver sends a certain voltage to the LNB so the LNB knows what chennes to look for. Tune into Global and the receiver sends another type of voltage to the LNB.

Tune into HD, and it not only has to change voltage, but also direct that voltage to the right LNB.

Switches are complex devices. Let them do the job they were built to do.
