westsider 2008-06-27, 03:24 PM Multiple streams are running on various HD stations in the Seatac area, with a few comings and goings of secondary stream programs. Per the Northwest Broadcasters list, about 50% of the HD stations are running an HD2. I have not heard any HD3 or HD4 stream (they are either not on the air or are more sensitive to reception impaiments). The HD2 stream seems to have similar robustness to the HD1 stream.
The strongest HD2 signals I receive (in Vancouver) are:
88.5 KPLU HD2: Jazz 24
94.9 KUOW HD2: KUOW2
97.3 KBSG HD2: Urban Adult Contemporary
99.9 KISW HD2: Live Rock
100.3 KMTT HD2: Roots and Blues
106.5 KWPZ HD2: Contemporary Christian (they've put Christian Rock on HD1)
It seems to be near impossible to get a lock on 107.7 KNDD ("The End") - I suspect they are not injecting a high enough HD modulation level.
westsider 2008-06-27, 03:40 PM A while ago I suggested that even low levels of co-channel interference would clobber HD radio. We have seen the first test of this.
On 102.9 one used to receive KNBQ "Q-Country" in solid HD, an 80 kW station in the Tacoma area. Recently a new station popped up on the same channel - KLOI-PL, a 14 W station on Lopez Island. That little 14 watter crushed Q-Country HD and regularly captures the analog FM detector. That new station is 150 km closer and features local programs, like people calling in to sing a song on the air.
One more country and western signal "bites the dust".
rob50312 2008-06-27, 06:13 PM I have found that I can receive the US HD signal but not the analog .In Toronto 106.5 is meduim powered station which completely blocked 106.5 WYRK Buffalo 65 miles south. With HD radio I can sometimes get WYRK but only in HD.Sometimes WKSE 98.5 Buffalo analog gets co- channel interference from 98.5 Kitchener but their digital is always perfect. If the Canadian stations were to use HD radio then I will be out of luck.REgulators need to do a better job allocated stations and saying no ,there are no available FM slots.
westsider 2008-06-27, 11:49 PM rob50312 - that is really interesting. Being in Mississauga, that Toronto FM must not be too far away. I wonder if you are using a directional antenna? Directionals, like 6 or 10 elements, can work miracles - especially when a null between sidelobes is positioned towards the local station.
rob50312 2008-06-28, 10:30 AM Westsider I am using 3 element yagi in the attic pointing at Buffalo.I am 30km from CN tower,105 km from downtown Buffalo.
Random Dude 2008-08-26, 05:51 PM As far as I know, there's one HD radio station in Canada
CFRM-FM "The Island" (http://www.theislandfm.com/) on Manatoulin Island.
Any others?
This might be a ridiculous question, but is there such thing as a DAB/IBOC radio?
CamDAB 2008-08-26, 09:34 PM As far as I know, there's one HD radio station in CanadaGood Catch! Wind power too. Interesting.
Now, as to DAB / IBOC, I don't know. Radioscape does make modules for industry. I *think* there is a DAB / IBOC module that a manufacturer can build a radio around. Oddly, I think one way to get DAB and IBOC market penetration would be to create iPod add-ons. There is a DAB one in Europe for the iPod. But a combo FM/IBOC/DAB one would be an interesting animal. :-)

SportsFan 2008-09-29, 05:30 PM Is anyone getting HD Radio stations from Northwest Washington? What equipment are you using?
stampeder 2008-09-29, 08:06 PM Only in my truck via my Alpine deck, and reception is mostly good to great in places south of the Fraser and high up in Burnaby and Coquitlam. It gets killed anywhere in the City of Vancouver except down by the river on the south side. For HD stations I'm usually trying to listen to KPLU-FM but I've picked up quite a few of the others.
Some time in the future I hope to add an HD Radio tuner to my home system with a good quality outdoor antenna.
SportsFan 2008-10-01, 01:11 PM I did some more searching and found that westsider is getting some HD radio in Vancouver. Is it safe to assume a similar setup in Nanaimo would get about the the same?
stampeder 2008-10-29, 03:23 AM With one of these and a good antenna the odds of getting SeaTac HD Radio in the FM band are getting much better:

stampeder 2008-12-09, 08:50 PM NAB, Automakers Urge FCC To Approve HD Power Boost
WASHINGTON -- December 8, 2008: In comments filed Friday with the FCC, the NAB said it supports a proposal filed earlier this year by a group of 18 radio broadcasters -- including Clear Channel, CBS Radio, Emmis, Greater Media, Radio One, Entercom, Lincoln Financial, and Beasley -- to allow HD Radio broadcasts to air at up to 10 percent of a station's analog power, a boost from the currently permitted 1 percent. Four leading electronics manufacturers also signed on to the proposal, which was accompanied by technical reports from HD Radio developer iBiquity Digital and CBS Radio.http://www.radioink.com/HeadlineEntry.asp?hid=144278&pt=todaysnews
rob50312 2008-12-10, 04:50 PM Good news as HD radio range is far less than analog at 1% power.
Anyone listening to HD Radio from Detroit in Windsor?
Tom.F.1 2008-12-29, 02:20 AM Anyone listening to HD Radio from Detroit in Windsor?
I drove though detroit on my way back from vacation in August. They had some great radio stations. I was on the 401 on my way east before digital started dropping out. And that was about the worst fog i've driven through.

I'm much closer to Detroit than the 401 - so digital reception should be possible... I will look into equipment, interested in home reception rather than auto, as I don't spend much time in the car...
jayman35 2008-12-30, 03:06 AM I figured the CRTC would follow the FCC, and start allowing IBOC experimental transmissions to go ahead. Also the US/Canada border cities who have audiences would be out of luck in one country broadcast DAB and the other IBOC. You would need 2 different radios or one radio with both. Usually canada will follow the us in this radio realm, the popularity is what dictates it.
Anyhow couple of questions
1. Does anyone have a list of these IBOC transmissions in Canada , experimental or being constructed. Or is that Industry Canada secret database material, lol.
2. I know in canada you probably can't buy one of these receivers, but are they selling them in the us states, perhaps NY, since i am in ontario. Radio Shack ? Circuit City?
Also, i am very curious of IBOC am reception at night? Anyone have a chance to experiment with this
Thanks for the replies in advance, i am a newcomer to the forum, and have many curiosities to be answered, but if someone would point me in the right direction, i would be greatfull. Thanks
Tom.F.1 2008-12-30, 04:21 AM I have an Alpine HD (IBOC) radio tuner in the car. Any and Every Alpine dealer in canada can sell you one. other mfgs make them and can be ordered into canada.
From Ajax, on the lake, i can get 5 Buffalo Digital stations, on a good day. Most of those have 2 different programs. Drove 2 vacations in the states last summer. Works great!!
The Monte is in storage for the winter, I miss the stereo most!! Can't help you with who or where the testers will be, but i heard its coming.
In its Public Notice CRTC 2006-160, the Commission said it would be prepared to authorize services using the IBOC/HD Radio technology for the AM and FM bands if the Canadian department of Industry authorizes it under the Radiocommunication Act. The CRTC added that “an expedited process would be adopted for stations that propose to transmit a digital simulcast of their analog service.”
stampeder 2008-12-30, 02:01 PM I've got the Alpine plugin module too in my truck and it sometimes goes digital if I'm in a good location for U.S. signals.
What is your location, jayman35? You can see in previous threads here that some of us get IBOC (HD Radio) stations in the Vancouver area from the U.S. but that reception is spotty without a proper rooftop FM antenna.
Also check out this Sony HD Radio tuner thread - its inexpensive and it performs amazingly: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=94361
jayman35 2009-01-01, 12:46 AM I am in the south Ottawa area sudburbs. I can pick up some analog stations in Northern NY, and Cornwall. I think WRCD 101.5 comes not bad, for the distance. I believe they have a beam at 50kw pointed towards the city even though they are in Canton, NY. Also WFRY 97.5 in Watertown NY, i get that even when i drive across the border into Gatineau Quebec in the hills sometimes. I know they are pushing 100kw or so. They are weaker ones. Q102.9, and 96.7 Yes fm. But 96.7 picket fences with the Pembroke station. Also Montreal i get 3 fm stations from there, not too bad either 94.3 , 96,9 (which i think at one time was 300kw, but downgraded now) and 92.5. But i would like to have an IBOC radio, before the stations up here are digital. Not the DAB radio either, as it is a different band all together.
The FM band is starting to become crowded up here. Even Smaller market radio stations that are granted operation permits from the CRTC/industry canada are weak power in rf but are commercial such as the Jewel 98.5. Its only 485 watts, but has been granted a permit to upgraded to an unknown ?kw power. The interesting thing about all this is the contours. And the overlapping of adjacent contours.
It will be really curious to see how iboc channels and adjacent channels play out within the rf contours, and how they blend or not blend with each other. I know its an emerging process. But we are always the last ones to jump on the band wagon, lol.
Also, question.... For those of you that do have an IBOC radio, and know what the term picket fencing is on the FM analog band. How does that work in IBOC, does a similar thing occur with 2 stations on the same frequency, or is it filtered perhaps
