With the BC code and Live Record ON, I have to reboot once a day. Maybe *C can give us a remote control button for this.

I Had live record on as well. Never came even close to rebooting everyday with BC. Sure wish I had BC now.

... My question to you ARR is what are you going to do (after all of your empty promises) for me if the machine still doesn't work after a year and a half? I guess I'll continue to use my connections and influence and work to make this a box you may someday be happy with, how about that?

And if you're not, at least everybody else will be!

I wonder why you have to reboot so often? I reboot about once a month. Otherwise it works fine. Maybe Kevin270's box is like an animal, it senses fear and acts in an appropriate manner.
Or maybe it dislikes his choice of channels or programming.

I have my DSR530 since last January. I never had BC code. I did not have to reboot too many times (average 1 per week).

I am not sure if live recording can reduce the lifetime of the hard disk since if was always writting to it so i turn off live recording early in March since i did not use the feature enough anyways. There should be a button to quickly turn on/off live recording instead of going thru the panels/menus.

I don't recall the last time i had to reboot my box, but i have been very carefull with the SKIP buttons.

Before the summer, i would say that i was recording about 20 hours per week on HD and SD. I would also watch live shows such as news, sports etc...

I have had the same problems as others with the 530 A8 code. From the begining I have always turned off the live record feature because I use it like a VHS..tape now watch later so I didn't need it and I maybe have to reboot once a month at most. My machine usually freezes up when I press the button too fast or it has the bugs of watching a recorded show but it's still on live so when the machine catches up it freezes. It's quirky but it works fine. Not geat or what I paid for but again - I'm still happy for now.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.
The Seagate drives are CE rated. That means designed for continious service in Consumer Electronics and are made specifically for the rigors of DVR service.

Or maybe it dislikes his choice of channels or programming.Your kind of on the right track. Ever since I bought my high def TV I record most of my shows from the high def channels. I'm sure that high def takes up more memory or more resources of the DSR530 than standard def does, which likely accounts for so many not having lock up problems. The problems that I have experienced have been much worse since I mostly record in High Def now. All I can tell you is that this is my 2nd machine, and both behaved the same way. A buddy at work also has the 530 and his problems are much worse than mine. The machines do react to the content of your recording - that's a definite fact. They also react to whether you are playing back a HD recording while at the same time the machine is recording another HD show on another channel. My machine will lock up each and every time if it is recording an HD show while I'm watching one. All I have to do is press SKIP FWD once or twice and away it goes. This is even moreso at the very beginning of the recording. IE: If I happen to press Jump Forward when the 530 is just starting to record something it will crash.

These things of course should never happen!

One of the reasons the forum has died down in regards to chat about the 530 is because people aren't watching as much TV. I know I'm not. I'm doing other things like biking and hiking in the beautiful weather we've been having. Everything on TV is pretty much a rerun right now. Come September I'll be quite pissed if this machine is not working. Seriously, we have waited LONG ENOUGH for the bugs to be cleared from the DSR530.

I also notice a difference in record/playback of HD versus SD.

The overwhelming majority for me is HD as well.
HD records 4 times as much data as SD.

The problems mentioned are well documented and is the #1 focus of the next version currently under test.

If/when it is released, The most catastrophic problems will virtually disappear.
What will be left, will be very minor annoyances and seldom occuring.

It will be a nice change of pace to hear Kevin270's outroar over trivial items.
Until then, his observations are quite valid for him and some others.
The majority, probably not, but enough to cause concern.

Well ARR all I can say is that I hope AND PRAY that you are right this time. I think we have all been more than patient waiting for a fix to happen.

I seem to remember someone mentioning July 5th as a possible firmware update. Anyone have any new info??

Our 530 has had a few more lock-ups than normal in the last couple of weeks!!

Very soon, I suspect, within a few weeks at most.

The few I've spoken to that have it under test indicate it quite worthy, finally.

Unfortunatly my crystal ball was stolen.

I was talking to a senior TSR a couple days ago about my DSR530 with the BC code. I was having lock ups and when I did an unplug or had a power interruption I would have to unplug and plug it back in again 4 or 5 times to get it to power back up again. He said it was probably do to a memory bleed and offered me another 530 exchange with the A8 code. I don't know if I should have, but I said that I would rather wait for the new code. He would not commit to any set time for the release of the code but said it should be out this month. I kind of took that he was expecting it to be the latter half of the month. He said that they found a few minor bugs like the channel up and down still keep going after you stop holding the button.
Anyone in the know on the problem I was having to get the 530 to power up will the new code reverse or fix this or is it just a matter of time before it goes dead. Should have I taking the exchange.

Your better off with BC, UNTIL it goes dead.
If it does, they'll replace it.
Hopefully, before that happens, everybody will have the new & improved CC code if they let it go in the next few weeks.

No point in getting all worked up by having A8.

I don't know how a box swap is gonna fix a memory leak.
New and better code does that.

Each boot makes you 1 step closer to a BC brain dead box though.
So just be carefull and try and hang on as best you can for a few.
Keep your recordins watched, in case it goes South and they swap it out.

You'll loose those recordings as they have no obligation to fix or return the same box back to you.

Thanks for answering my question that the new code will reverse or solve the boot up problem. I am going to stay with the BC code. Over all I had good luck with the BC code after I found out the does and the don'ts of it. One thing I found that helped set timers for recordings to activate was to power off the receiver when not in use. Also when I had two different shows to record back to back on the same channel I would just set the timer for the first show and go into options 5 and add the extra time for the next show manually. By the way ARR are you saying that the next code is CC.

I'm saying the code currently in field test is CC.

I see no reason for it NOT to be the next code for all of us, but stranger things have happened, just look at the BC deployment.

Without being a fly on the wall at *C or Moto, I guess we'll all find out together!

Well, my 530 died last night. I had the BC code. Had to do a few front panel resets lastnight and on the 3rd one it just wouldn't come back on. I unplugged it overnight and tried it again this morning but nothing. The power supply seem to get warm but there was no heat coming from the area of the hard drive so I'm assuming a hard drive failure or the circuit board. The unit constantly ran at about 58-59C so I'm wondering if it finally overheated?

Phoned *C this morning and they had me try a power reset (disconnect sat wire, unplug unit for a couple minutes and then plug it back in while pressing and holding the power button on the front panel for a minute). No success.

I bought my unit just after they came out in May of 2005 but the TSR decided to exchange my unit even though it was just a month or so out of warranty. Hopefully the new unit will be here by the end of the week.

Any news when the new code will be released yet???

The symptons make it appear the disk or power supply is dead.
That's because the flash memory that boots the system is so corupt, it can't even try to start to boot and , well, it's just dead.

I expect the new code any day now, but as I alluded in an earlier email, my crystal ball was stolen.

Whoops!! I found someone's crystal ball and there are no releases in the near future. :)
