: Dec 12th: DSR530 Code BC Fixes, Features & Bugs
Don't confuse that to mean that the bulk of the stability issues are not in Moto's hands, they are!
I know it's Moto's job to settle it but ultimately, all customers are going to hit *C, not Moto. I'm no Moto's customer. I pay my sub to *C. If *C can't give me the product I need, *C looses. They may not have anything to do with the box or software but ultimately they are loosing the customers, not moto. If Moto fails, it's *C who looses customers.
When *C started out, they had the choice of going or not with Cancom. At that time, they were not owned by a cableco. They chose to go with Cancom.
I just wish Moto (or moto's sub contractor) finds a way to fix the 530's problems. *C will loose customers if they don't. The 530 may have a more "hacker free" core but it's still very unstable and unreliable. All thoses lockups, the no-datas, the missing recordings, the pixels with picture cut, the jump functions problems, etc... It's been over a year now.
... It's been over a year now.
We'll not quite, but your points are all valid and well taken.
Problem is, are they taken by *C?
Even if they just came clean and said, "Hey, sorry guys/gals...
We'll extend your warranty and we expect the next load to be available in... to settle the majority of your concerns..."
Of course that would have to come from a very senior person.
We'l just have to wait and see I guess.

Maybe my history is a little hazy (and please correct me if I'm wrong), but wasn't it Cancom who started Starchoice to utilise their distribution system in the DTH market? Or did Cancom buy Starchoice at some point in the past?
I always liked to think of Starchoice as the unwanted and unloved stepchild that Cancom brought with them in union with Shaw!

Starchoice was started by a person here in New Brunswick. I believe after that, Cancom bought Starchoice, and then after that, Shaw bought Cancom, which means they also bought Starchoice. I worked for them here in N.B. at the time, and our heads were spinning at one point, we weren't sure who we really worked for :)
cellarboy 2006-05-11, 01:51 PM Yeah, I've spoken to a couple of people who were employees during the transition period and they said it was a fun fun time!! :)

The last CR I spoke to at Starchoice expressed great surprise that I was having problems with the 530. He claimed he had received very few complaints about the 530. I wonder what planet he lives on
JoBel 2006-05-12, 09:24 AM I thing the direction of SC ignore the customer because the want us to beleive everything is going well and they are in control.
My guest is more we don't answer of our customer more we can get time and be forgeted.
People said good customer service! People with 530 does't thing of that so.
In one or two month if nothing happen, I go back with COGECO. They already change the freeware with new programing. That's service customers we all want a see with this compagny.

There are almost 300 people in the CSR/TSR departments in the Calgary call centre alone. It's entirely possible this person had been lucky enough not to receive a 530 call in a good while. We are, unfortunately, a very very small percentage of their user base after all.
It's not like the management or engineering departments send emails or give briefings to these guys on a regular basis letting them know what is going on with problems on the 530. I don't beleive the job is one that allows working to chat between themselves very much either, so if they don't get the calls, they don't learn of the issues.
It annoys me no end when people attack the CSR's for being clueless or offering poor customer service when the real issue is management not keeping these poor guys/gals in the loop. Sorta defeats the purpose of having customer service agents in the first place. It's like calling to book a plane ticket when the airline refuses to give the agents the flight schedules.
I still think Motorolas engineers should be required to take all calls for the 530.....

On their home phone lines....
Keane 2006-05-12, 04:44 PM Just because I haven't seen it mentioned in a while; I had the HD PVR from Persona Cable (I think it could record HD, but I know you could watch it)and it was a Motorola box and I had 6, thats right, SIX of them die in 8 months. That is why I came to SC. Now I am having all the same problems everyone else is having on this forum. It tells me that the fault has to at least partly belong to Motorola .
I have no where else to go as there is no way anybody is going to talk me into going over to Bell...was there before, will never go back! Even though I am having problems with my box, at least the SC CSs are nice.
Kevin270 2006-05-12, 07:04 PM I still think Motorolas engineers should be required to take all calls for the 530.....I think the senior management should be taking all of the 530 calls so that they would realize how badly the Motorola engineers need to be fired.

It's sad isn't it? When the best we have here in Canada is a machine that locks up every day, and who knows if it will record when it should.
It's a true lack of competition - the entire root of the problem.

Apparantly cell phone reception isn't too great at their golf club....

Hey, we all have a choice of providers. Mine just happens to be cable-Shaw, satellite-Shaw and Bell. Errm, what was my point again??? :)

I've heard a rumor that Shaw's president was there one Friday and talked to some agents and took a few 530 customers calls.
The story goes he spanked Motorola over the whole ordeal and they are holding back the code until it's near perfect.
Last rumoured to be July sometime.
If/when you do switch shall be a day of celebration at DHC in the *c threads.
There is little competition anywhere in the world for that matter, even the U.S., you can choose 1 of 2 national sat. providers and your local cable/telco.
ALL of which use proprietary boxes, no matter how and where you slice it, the same problems exist.
Maybe oneday under OCAP, they'll be a plethora of DVR's to choose from that will be provider agnostic.

And those of us waiting for that rumoured day will also celebrate on DHC!!!
The arrival or departure or both!
remanco 2006-05-17, 11:22 PM Hi.
I dont ant to start rumor :D but i called *C about (guess what) a problem with my dsr530(the image and sound locks for 2 to 4 secs when playing a recorded show. is does that intermitent). He said that i was not alone having problems. So while waiting with him on the line while i factory resetted my dsr530, i did some blabla and he told me that some of their received in the callcenter had version C4 as a test. but we did not know when this (or any other) version will be publicly released.....
So will wait...............

Kevin270 2006-05-17, 11:37 PM Hopefully it won't go the route of the BC code where only a few get it, and then they pull it and that's the end of it. I don't know about others, but I have found that you cannot depend on dates that StarChoice gives you. The last I was told was September. Others have mentioned Easter, some mentioned May, yet others have mentioned July for new code. It's like playing a game of roulette. You never know what date you'll get.
I've heard the same as well.
If the testing goes well, then July.
If it doesn't, like the C0 scheduled before Easter, then it's delayed.
It'l get done when it's done and nothing we can do will hurry it up.
Every time we try and push, mistakes are made and things overlooked.
Kevin270 is right about BC, things got rushed, testing didn't show the fatal flaw until after it was sent out to several hundred and look what happened.
Just because *C is testing it doesn't mean we'll see it, but it does appear to be a good sign that things have been happening in the background.
Let's see, the last code was BC and they jump by 4 hex, so there must have been a C0 and the guy said C4. So that's at least 2 major versions and umpteen point release internally.
We should start a pool on the version number (C4 or C8) and what week it'll come out.
Maybe it will take our minds off our problems, or we can go enjoy the summer and see what the box says when we all get back from vacation.
Kevin270 2006-05-18, 06:59 PM Haha, my guess would be release F0.
satdude 2006-05-18, 10:01 PM Isn't C4 a name for a explosive?
