Long time lurker, early adopter and concerned owner here!

I would personally like to see Starchoice come forward and extend the warranty on the 530. Im getting awfully close to my year warranty, in May, what worries me is that another poorly engineered code will result in a dead unit, say 1 week after my warranty expires.... hmmm.... could I see a conspiracy?

Come on Starchoice, do the decent thing and give us a warranty preiod within a viable code that works!

I asked the same question yesterday....and *C response was that there is no way they would not exchange the 530 (or any other receiver) if it dies due to a software code issue...even beyond the warranty....

We'll I always been against any sort of legal proceedings, but if that WERE the case, I'd say go for it and name Motorola as well.

First though...
I'd make your concerns known to their top dog in writing as well.
Polite of course.
Maybe even take it up a notch to the Shaw side of the business.

A little Google searching or even here should reveal just who the big cheeses are.

I honestly expect that this would not be needed and the agents were just towing the party line.

It's still 2 months away yet and lots can happen.
Stable code could be deilvered b4 the 1 year is up...
The warrantly could be extended...
Hell could freeze over...

Or you can check their financial results for actual contact numbers as well. Their CFO's contact info is on their first quarter 2006 press release.

Yeah. Those of you who don't seem to have one of the "stable" boxes, I'd be writting a nice letter by registered mail seeking written confirmation the warranty will be extended or for some sort of guarantee your box will eventually start working properly. It can't hurt, and if worse comes to worse, at least you have the proof you tried to solve it first.

This morning I was walking past the 530 and noticed it was recording something. I never did set a timer. It had been recording for 9 hours and 16 min on station 395 before I stopped it. Has anyone else come across this. I have the BC code.

Not that I'm aware of. It also showed about 7 shows that it recorded on that station during that time.

I was suspecting the Impulse record button maybe, But if I recall correctly, it still ask for a confirmation of the current show until the end or something.

It may have been a modified timer with a longer end time.

No big deal, just erase the recordings.

I've had my DVR530 now for 2 weeks. It has version .A8, and has not yet even indicated a new target version of .BC.

The installer said I should leave the receiver tuned to channel 299 when not watching in order to get the downloads and program info. I find this hard to believe, especially when the same installer told me I would need a second dish to get 5 LNB feeds - even though I had a 2x8 multi-switch still attached to the cables from the old ExpressVu dish he removed. But that's a topic for another thread: Installer Myths

So, what's up with the download? Is there a trick to make it happen

Nobody can get "BC" as it was pulled by *C. A new release is "supposed" to be out in the weeks to come and the receiver would automatically be updated. Leave your 530 plugged in but on standby when the update becomes available. Till that time you will remain on A8.

Thanks for the info. I generally leave the units on standby when not being viewed. I figured that this was the most likely process for receiving upgrades and that the installer was wrong.

That raises a very interesting point. Because the 530 uses a radio controlled remote it has a lot further range. A close neighbour with the same setup could conceivably control your system. I wonder if anyone has encountered their sets being turned off and on and channel changes, recordings etc. Worth thinking about

A few mysterious power offs and channel changes when I first subscribed made me suspicious enough to check with my neighbor and see if he used his *C remote and had the UHF antenna attached.
He did. I removed the antenna (DSR 505 not 530) since I use a harmony remote and haven't had problems since.

We have a DSR505 in the basement and a DVR530 upstairs. The 530 is used most often yet we noticed sometimes the 505 was on when it shouldn't be. My wife & I each silently blamed the other for forgetting to turn it off.

One day I was in the basement and used the remote to turn on the receiver. Within a few seconds it turned itself off. I turned it back on, and then a few seconds later it turned itself off again. I gave up and went upstairs to watch on the 530. When I got there, I told my wife that the downstairs set was acting up and turning itself off. She said "Yeah, this one's doing the same thing"

Ding! It struck me that we were playing a game of dueling remotes. I changed the code on one of the remotes, and it never happened again. The range on those things is something else! The two sets are about 30' apart.

The range is very good. I have two receivers in the basement, beside the switch, and I use the remotes from the second floor to control TV viewing in the bedroom and offices. The upstairs sets are connected by 75 ohm coax, converted from a previous life as cable TV feeds. So the signal easily goes through multiple walls and floors.

The HDTV sets (a 505 and a 530) require a different approach, the receiver is with the TV set.

I went away for a few days last week and when I came back I found a 45 hour recording on my 530. NOTE: It is impossible to setup a recording longer then 24 hours. Anyway it filled up my hard drive and screwed me out of a few shows I had set to record after that.

I hope we get some better code soon.

BTW: Warranty problems. I bought the extended warranty at Best Buy so I can deal with them directly for fixes or replacement units the next 5 years. (Don't know yet if it was a good decision )

for some reason my 530 is cropping all standard def channels when set to 1080i or 720p output modes (except when the channel info banner is on the bottom.)

That sounds like a TV setting. I leave my DSR530 on 0000 so that this doesn't happen. In any case, if you have your DSR530 on 1080i, then you need to check your TV to ensure you don't have some widescreen setting activated. With the Toshiba TV, if you put the Theater2 mode on it will do this.

Hello all, I'm another who has been following along for a while. Thought I'd just mension that I also had the issue with a extra long recording. After coming back from a week vacation i found a huge list of shows that had been recorded in sequence. About 16 hrs or so I'm guessing. Didn't take the time to count them all.
