DCT6200 and DVD recorder problems?
Went to record a couple of shows tonite from my DCT6200 to my panasonic DVD recorder and it said "recording not allowed".
Now I haven't recorded anything for a while now from my cable box, 2 months maybe, but I never used to have this problem.
Did Shaw do something with copy-protection in one of their goofy firm-ware updates or am I missing something.
I have no problem recording right from the analog cable from the wall.
Also, I have it hooked up thru my S-video connection, if that matters.
Thanks in advance.

Posted in wrong section , now found this thread.
Any new news regarding Shaw and their ass-backwards practises?
I'll email Shaw and see what happens.

Well I tried recording from my Motorola 6200 to my new Panasonic DVD Recorder for the first time last night. I used yellow composite video with red/white audio and recorded from an SD digital channel and it worked no problem. I kept the set top box at 1080i as well. It should be able to stay at 1080i because the signal coming out from s-video or composite is only 480 anyways. Shaw is doing some weird things regarding this whole issue.

I have had the same issues as everyone else. I'm using a Lite-On LVC-9006 vcr/dvd recorder combo and I cant record anything......even to the vcr:o

I complained to the local shaw tech support today. They claimed they knew nothing about it. But they are escelating the issue.

They said they would call me back...........like thats ever going to happen!

Last week I was able to copy a HD channel from from Phase III 6412 onto my Panasonic hard drive, edit it and burn it to DVD. But this week the flag seems to be set again. I can copy to my hard drive and edit it but not burn it. I tried to copy it over again but this time I used my Phase II box and it worked fine. Copied it, edited it, burned it, no problem. My settings on both boxes is 1080i and I am copying over an SVideo cable.

In terms of 5C Implementation, does Shaw have this on every non basic channel such as Family, Comedy Network and BBC Canada?

I have a different cable company (Source Cable Hamilton) and they have 5C=1 for every channel that is not on basic. So essentially it criples my ability to use the firewire port on my DCT6200.

A PC can only record via firewire if the 5C setting is 0, however, since the 6200 is not a PVR, you SHOULD be able to record via firewire with a "proper" device like a D-VHS recorder, since 5C=1 should allow 1 recording.

See the Digital Home FAQ "Recording HD" (under Help).

You should contact Source and see if they'll change that setting on all their STBs. There's no reason for a 5C=1 setting (on regular channels) at this time and even HD channels other than premium HD, other than lack of knowledge on the part of the service provider.

I'm actually going to pay Source Cable a visit on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if anyone there will know what I'm talking about. Needless to say if they don't fix it, I will be getting rid of it fast. I will not use the analog outputs for recording because all I can get is 4x3 letterbox.

Well.....after 5+ hours during 3 phone calls on the phone 2 weeks ago, and having a technician come to my house and tell me they were aware of the issue, I tried last night to see if anything had changed. And sure enough I could record from all channels.

So.....I dont know!?

Just checked my panasonic DVD recorder, can now record on all channels and inputs from my DCT6200 as well. Did they maybe get the hint and fixed it or is it just a temporary quirk. Hope not cause Wedding Crasher's is on the movie channel this weekend, it would be nice to burn it onto DVD.
If it's fixed, good job Shaw!!!!!

My Digital box is not High Definition, it is the basic box. Can these fixes still work? My DVDR is a Toshiba.

Charlyne13. Which make/model STB do you have?

Did it record properly "before"? Are some programmes/channels recordable, while others are not?

See also the Digital Home FAQ "How to connect a VCR (or DVDR) and Cable STB" (Under Help) to ensure you have the appropriate connections.

I hope someone with Shaw experience answers your question.

My Cable box is a DCT2000HT. It did record properly...now unable torecord newer movies on the digital channels. We have had Shaw at our home recently, and I asked about the connections and they are supposedly correct.

The first post of this thread is close to the time you mentioned in the other thread - it's about 6-7 months instead of your 4. It's likely the same issue.

There are many ways to connect the STB/DVDR - many people simply connect the RF-cable from the STB, which is not the best way since it gives you mono sound and the poorest picture quality.

See the Digital Home FAQ "Cables & Connections" (under help).

You may wish to revisit the FAQ I mentioned in post 172, although if you can't record, it won't do you much good until you can.

I ask again, are there any programmes on the digital channels that you CAN record, or are you unable to record anything from the digital channels.

Can you record the analogue channels? Do you do that via the internal tuner of the DVDR?

The only thing I can't record are movies, those from mid 2004 to the present.

Just an add, after rereading....and checking the back of both the DVDR and my digital box. Up until 4 - 6 months ago, we could record all movies on digital cable. We then started receiving messages that the movies were copywrited....MC1, 2, 3 ...usually movies made mid-2005 to the present. we have no problem recording from the analogue channels. All recording is done via the internal tuner of the DVDR. As far as hookups go, the cable goes from s video on the cable box to s video in on the dvdr. We use line 1. As far as checking Digital Home FAQ "How to connect a VCR (or DVDR) and Cable STB, it looks like we have the right connections. I called Shaw and some fellow informed me that this has happened to him in the last while, and there is a law about recording copywritten material. Didn't accept that I pay for the service and should be able to record what I want.....

Thank you for this additional feedback. This is a different scenario from what we have encounterd in the rest of this thread where certain channels cannot be recorded due to the 5C settings, unless all movies on MC1,2,3 cannot be recorded, which appears not to be the case.

Your situation appears almost to be like a "broadcast flag" where certain programmes cannot be recorded. Broadcast flags are not legal as far as I know, for analogue recording. For premium channels the channel can request "limited recording" in the digital domain - see the Digital Home FAQ "Recording HD" (under Help), however, "fair use" should allow recording in the analogue domain.

I suggest you follow this up further with Shaw, perhaps copying the CRTC...

Has anyone else had similar issues?

We have no such issues that I know on Rogers and I've not heard of such issues on other service providers. It appears to be something that Shaw is doing (and perhaps Cogeco, who also use Motorola STB).

Have a look at the following new thread in a slightly different vein.

The solution to Charlyne13's problem is found in the above thread.

Thanks. Do you want me to include my problem in the new thread? It would be so great if this issue could be fixed. It's more the principal of being able to record what I am paying for.

Do you want me to include my problem in the new thread?
Sure. It'll be interesting to see how much feedback there is. If there is little, then I guess it's not much of a problem, but if there's a lot, then people with the problem really will need to bother their service providers.
