JohnnyCanuck 2006-04-20, 12:45 PM nalog and digital all at once at its own whim and then sometimes it does't.
In my opionion it is a Shaw/Motorola software issue. The box keeps setting its copy protection flag to 5C=1 and as part of 5C triggers macrovision in the analog domain. The broadcasters are not sending 5C, expecially channels like PBS and CBC HD that are getting blocked.
In terms of HD, it is only CBC and CTV that have any form of copy protection/encryption turned on. That means it is not a software problem, nor is it Shaw/Motorola because it would affect all HD channels.
Johnny, It may be that way in Vancouver, but posts from people in other areas and the experiences posted in this thread point to a Shaw firmware issue.
dsaintmb 2006-04-20, 02:36 PM Yea, with me the only channel I can't record with PC is PBS. (Winnipeg)
misterspiffy 2006-04-20, 06:23 PM I am relatively new to this board and the thread. I am in Calgary on Shaw using a home-grown PVR solution. I wonder if a Macrovision filter would allow me to record HD shows coming into an HDTV tuner card? I know some of the HDTV tuner cards automatically decrypt digital tv signals (but only those channels that you are paying to receive from your cable company). This would be an inexpensive way to fix a similar issue many others in this thread would seem to be having.

magnet 2006-04-20, 07:07 PM Nope. HDTV channels are digitally encrypted. Macrovision filter is something different. The only stations you get with a QAM tuner on shaw (atleast in Calgary) are TLN, Video-On-Demand, 40 digital radio channels. All other channels are encrypted.
Your digital box hooked up to the HDTV tuner doesn't work either. So if you subscribe to say NHL Network, you'll only be able to see it on your digital box, not your tuner card.

Sonisame 2006-04-21, 07:25 PM Does any one know currently how many HD channels have 5C =1 set in lower mainland vancouver area?
Sonisame
JohnnyCanuck 2006-04-21, 09:01 PM Two: CBC (309) and CTV (310).
beefgravy 2006-04-24, 12:39 AM dont you find it weird that the 2 channels that are 5c are the only 2 channels that are OTA aswell. i mean i can record from my OTA card with no issues with these 2 channels but on shaw they are 5c?
could it be something to do with how these 2 channels are fed to shaw from the station?
Sonisame 2006-04-24, 12:52 PM Thanks JohnnyCanuck
I did end up buying DCT6200 from bestbuy, I have to try firewire ports on it on my MCE machine(Shaw tech-support while acitivating the box told me that firwire ports are disabled on the shaw HD boxes)

Roreman 2006-04-24, 03:44 PM Sonisame. That's weird. My brother-in-law got a 6412 a few weeks back and the box had an instruction sheet on how to hook up firewire to his PC. Did you get one with yours? They are most definitely active.

I am going to try firwire tonight on the box(its a non PVR model), I have all the software needed downloaded, if indeed the ports are disabled, I am going to politely request them(Shaw) to turn them on, or I will take the box back to store for refund

ironmike 2006-04-24, 07:52 PM I bought the 6200 yesterday and the firewire ports are active.
As others have found I can only record into MCE if I set the output to 480i. As soon as I change it to any other output I get the recording error.
I called Shaw and they said this is a known problem that they are working on. Hopefully they will finally resolve this issue.
Mike
JohnnyCanuck 2006-04-24, 08:16 PM The firewire ports are active. For the setup for XP I suggest you follow Kevin Moye's excellent guide (http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/).
I am not sure if using CapDVHS gets around the MCE issue but it works very well in XPSP2.
JesseJ 2006-04-24, 08:52 PM HD works fine via firewire in Calgary on a 6412. Recorded Super Size Me the other night, transferred it to DVD no problem.
nruffell 2006-04-25, 05:44 PM [QUOTE=BPWingN]The CSR I spoke to, mentioned they believed it to be a Macrovision problem, and that other than doing the menu change to 480i......a macrovision filter would probably do the trick too.
Well...I got one....and....PRESTO!
No more having to switch the menu on my STB to record the HD channels onto my DVD Recorder.
So where do I get one if Shaw doesn't fix the problem?
Sonisame 2006-04-27, 11:45 AM Thanks everyone for their help, I am able to use firewire connection to view/record most of the HD channels in Media Centre Application through shaw DCT6200 box.
For anything which has 5c=1, I use vlc player application on my pc to view it through my pc dvi ports (I just cant record it).

nruffell 2006-05-02, 10:17 PM I have now copied two shows off my 6412 onto the hard drive of my PVR/DVD, edited them and burned them to DVD through my S-Video cable without having to reset the 6412 to 480I!!
meshmellow 2006-05-02, 11:34 PM I have now copied two shows off my 6412 onto the hard drive of my PVR/DVD
Were the shows on high definition channels? I haven't had a problem copying from analogue or ordinary digital channels.

Do you what your settings were? I still have a problem with the 6200 unless I set to 480i.
Thank you,
