rkonkin You are confusing HDCP (which has to do with monitors) and 5C, which has to do with recording and firewire. There have been no consumer recording devices with HD component video inputs. There is one new (Hauppauge) card available, but it is not available yet and there has been no feedback on its capabilities. See the following post on Recording HD.

And the following post, useful for newbies to the forum:

mcpish 2008-05-24, 05:35 PM Thankfully, none of the HD channels on Shaw in Winnipeg are 5C encrypted.
Some of them used to be but not in the past 6-8 months. Everything is in the clear. MythTV has no problems recording from any HD channel via firewire.
michelkenny 2009-04-01, 05:27 PM I tried to record 24 (Fox) and Chuck (NBC) yesterday via Firewire and it didn't work. I just set it up so I'm not sure if it's 5C or not, but all my other shows (The Unit, etc) recorded fine.
shadowlordkt 2009-04-01, 07:42 PM michelkenny, you don't mention what region you are in. I was able to record Chuck via firewire without any problems this week. I'm in Vancouver, and I believe I caught the NBC Seattle HD feed at 8pm Monday.
michelkenny 2009-04-02, 01:18 AM Oops, I live in Winnipeg, and I caught the earliest showing possible. I'll check the diagnostic page next week and try a few different airings.
EdmShawCust 2009-08-10, 11:43 AM Just saw this news item:
http://westcoastsuccess.wordpress.com/2009/08/08/shaw-cable-blocks-ieee1394-firewire-on-set-top-cable-boxes-again/
adiabatic 2009-08-10, 01:25 PM Did anyone catch the article on Slashdot yesterday about this? Some guy was ranting that the 5c flag is being set for some non-premium SD channels. So far I can find no mention of this to determine if it's an isolated incident.
I checked my box last night and both SD and HD content was transerrable to my PC-based PVR.
I'm going to purposely mung the link so that Google doesn't index it any more than it is but for your info, change hxxp to http.

beefgravy 2009-12-16, 11:04 PM so is tsn now 5c=1... crazy as tsn2 isnt.... shaw sort it out...

Shaw passes along any encryption that the network embeds in their streams to them. They don't add or remove this. You will often see encryption turning on and off on different programming on the same channel. This is the networks choice of what they wish to encrpyt or not and as such has nothing to do with Shaw.
beefgravy 2009-12-18, 10:05 PM in the options on my motorola box it shows CCI: 0x02
this is something shaw controls not the source network i believe.

also if that was the case how come it isnt turned on through bell etc...

beefgravy, I was not able to record Monday Night Football last week. I tried to record the game on TSN2, and did not get it there either. Was there an issue with TSN for that week, and have they resolved it? I was certainly annoyed, but must admit I did not check the 5c=1 code. Hopefiully that will have been resolved for today's game.
beefgravy 2009-12-22, 01:10 AM well i am maybe using the wrong term as i dont know if c5 is the same thing as CCI which i dont think it is.
i havent had a problem at all with tsn2, lucky they have replayed the canuck games striaght after the game is shown on tsn1. i can only think this has happened after shaw made tsn a free preview for a month or whatever....
actually i will put money on it, that is when this started.... i have a 6200 box so pvr to my comp with it...
Thunder 2009-12-22, 11:18 AM An interesting point. I was able to record the NFL game last night, so what ever was going on, there was a change!
adiabatic 2009-12-28, 12:38 AM Something is definitely up at TSN. I haven't checked the 5c flag but non-premium content (i.e., not professional sports) is full of missing sync bytes. It plays back on the box fine but is unusable on the HTPC.
TSN2 is fine though.
beefgravy 2009-12-28, 07:18 PM that is probably the CCI which is now turned on 0x02 means on.
The CCI flag seems to control the overall encryption, as situations have been found where a stream was set DRM 0x01 and CCI 0x00, and the program was successfully captured.
It is likely that the CCI flag values correspond to those established by the DTLA:
Copy Never (11 or 0x03)
Copy One Generation (10 or 0x02)
No More Copies (01 or 0x01)
Copy Freely (00 or 0x00)
"Copy One Generation" (0x02) does not refer to the initial recording on the DVR, but to one copy to a DTCP-compliant device, i.e., a DVHS deck.
A PC connected via Firewire is not DTCP-compliant, so no copying that requires authentication is allowed. That means only content marked "Copy Freely" (0x00) can be transferred to a PC, as all others require authentication.
so basically yes this is shaw doing this not the original source network bs....
adiabatic 2009-12-29, 11:37 PM OK, so this took a bit of investigating but I think I get it now.
TSN is CCI: 0x02 (therefore no copying to PC) but what threw me is that I was copying something. Turns out what I copied was the encrypted stream with encryption keys that change every 120 seconds. Me = hosed.
We should start a list of good/bad channels.
TSNHD = 0x02
AMCHD = 0x02
TSN2D = 0x00
PBSHD (KCTS) = 0x00
beefgravy 2010-01-15, 09:28 PM seems shaw has now switched off CCI to 0x00 and turned on DRM 0x02. this is fine with me as firewire is working again :)
adiabatic 2010-01-16, 03:49 AM TSN, yes. AMCHD, no.
shadowlordkt 2010-01-26, 12:57 PM I've been noticing a similar problem on TheScoreHD back in December 2009 - can anyone confirm or deny it's the same problem?
(I also had the TSN issue - but haven't checked lately)
