No, you cannot

Yeah Edmonton 308-315 is 5C=1 also and it doesn't look like it will change. Despite almost 4 hours of calls with CSR and a technician they don't have a clue what I'm talking about, or they're acting dumb. Ridiculous really. May as well can the channels, they're no use to me encrypted...

Hey all, I just wanted to add some input to this 5C situation.

I've been reading and monitoring this thread for a while and have come to some findings that I don't think someone has mentioned. (correct me if I'm wrong)

First of all, when I first tried to record some HD content from my 6412 to the computer via firewire. It recored fine. No 5C implentation, this was around Oct-Nov time frame. Then I tried again just around x-mas and the 5C was implemented and I couldn't record via firewire. Same channel (same show)

Now last week I recored 3 (30min shows off Showcase HD back to back)
the first show recorded fine, the 2nd and 3rd did not.
I think this 5C is implemented on a per show bases. Not the entire channel in general.

Next I love to record some shows off of Disc. HD and found that at x-mas timeframe they had the 5C implentation.
Then last week two episodes of the same show did not have the 5C implemented.
So I've come to some sorta of conclusion that this 5C implentation is on a per show bases. Why you ask? not sure?
I will continue to monitor these shows and channels but it just seems wierd
what's going on. This is what i have found so far.

later.

Hello I just joined and I have a DCT6200 from shaw in vancouver and yes it won't work with XP MCE 2005 any more . It would work if I had not installed the updaterollup 2 for MCE but then I couldn't install IE7 or WMP 11 without it . The PVR ver of the moto box works but not the DCT6200 they want you to buy the more expensive box I think and not use a pc . I am using the firewire drivers and CapDVHS.exe and they work for me . The .mpg file made by CapDVHS will play in WMP and MCE but you can't use the skip or ffw . VLC works for me to view directly from the firewire but can be slightly buggy at times . I dabble in VB.net Express a bit and was maybe thinking of makeing a frontend for the channel.exe that is part of the firewire drivers for channel changing and CapDVHS for recording . CapDVHS seems to work better if not left running but can work in you do leave it running . It uses an ini file so if I where to make a frontend for it then I should be able to write the ini file just before running it . It would be nice for a guide too but most guides you have to sign up for before hand . For channel changing you can always just set a vcr timer on the STB that will work with CapDVHS .

Well I have a work around of sorts . I also have a shaw digital box , the cheapo less than $100 box . I hooked it up to my computer and tuned it to one of the HD channels . The box does not recieve HD so all that shows is a black screen . That is enough for XP media center though and it records the black screen . At the same time the firewire software ( By Tim moore) is recording the show from the firewire connected to the DCT6200 box . After the show has been recorded the firewire software gets the meta data from the recording and adds it to the firewire recording and removes the recording made by media center leaving me the HD recording made by the firewire . So at least I can record my fav shows again with XP MCE I never did watch live tv with MCE because it is SD not HD because of the tuner card in the PC .

that still only works it the channel is not 5c=1. If it is, your firewire output to your computer will be encrypted and nothing will record.

I agree, I believe that they are enabling the 5C on a show by show basis. I tried to capture some of the new episodes of Kim Possible on the Family Channel (Ch 68 in Calgary) via Firewire and have not been able to. I have however, captured some other shows on the same channel without any difficulties.

Anyone else had the same experience?

Cheers,

So what's the current status of the 5c flag for shaw customers in Vancouver? Are MC1 HD and MC2 HD protected?

I'm not going to go by a channel by channel basis cause I'm just to lazy right now.

In Winnipeg with the new HD lineup I can and can not capture...

200 -202 NO GO - Can't record
203 - 209 YES - I can capture
211 - 221 YES - Can capture including MC 1 & 2 Discovery, NG and Showcase.

Some of these channels were previously 5C protected. The only thing I can't record is a couple of U.S. Time shifts and I record those on the other shift. So I am very Happy.:D

Cheers

205, 206, 207, 208 = can NOT capture
209 = can capture
210 = can NOT capture

Have a DCT 6224 and tried an RCA DVD recorder. I get the message you cannot record on any channel with Shaw.

Do any of the video stabilizers work if connected between the Motorola and recorder?

cannew, you're in the wrong thread. See the following one:

The answer to your last question is yes.

Is this copy protection strictly for people who are trying to transfer material? What about viewers that only want to timeshift and store a few programs or movies that are hd?

You question was answered in your other thread. This is only for copying/recording "outside" the DVR.

Note however, that "On Demand" programmes cannot be recorded and that some PPV have been problematical, however, regular recording/timeshifting of SD & HD channels (outside those mentioned in the previous clause) is just fine.

Just a quick question before I run out and buy a firewire cable... anyone in Winnipeg or beyond able to successfully capture TSN HD?

I was trying to use the firewire o/p from the DCT to an ASI converter and ran into the 5C bug.
What I was informed was, that when the programmer asserts any of the copy restriction flags, it passes through and the 5C is SET.

If there is NO flags in the content, then their DAC (Digital Addressable Controller) has the ability to set or raise the level of the flag, say from copy once to copy never or add one where none existed before.

Ok I've noticed that virtually every non-hd digital channel in Calgary has 5C=1 set(the only channels not set that I could find are the shopping channel, National Geographic and the premium chinese channels. Any reason for that?
