309 and 310 have always been =1 since they added them. at that time all the channels got turned on for some reason and someone eventually got 301 to 307 turned off by knowing someone at shaw to talk too.

but for some reason cbc and tsn onwards are DTCP encrypted.

Is there a list somewhere which details on shaw channels with 5c =1 enabled, I know 309-313 have 5c =1 for sure.

I attempted to record the TSNHD Canucks-Wild game last night and it did not work. I have come here as part of my troubleshooting routine to see if it was a problem originating from Shaw or if it was the CAPVHS (sp?) software not set up properly, or even a missing video codec on my computer. I live in Coquitlam.

Is it safe to assume that the problem is 5C=1 in this case, or could the problem have originated elsewhere?

Anyone else successfully record the game?

Anyone have a workaround to suggest?

TSN-HD is 5C=1 and therefore will not work with CAPVHS on your PC nor will it work for any other program on your PC. Only way to make a recording is to record via S-Video, Composite or RF.

How so?

The only cards/devices I know if that can record anything from a component cable are mucho expensive (+$1500.00)... so how are you recording anything off of components?

There are some devices like DVD recorders that have component video inputs, however, they also are fairly expensive (over $500) and also limit the input to 480i.

There are no consumer devices with HD component video inputs. See the Digital Home FAQ (under help) "Recording HD".

looks like 310,311,312,313 are now back to 5c=1 in vancouver downtown again...

was nice for a while there, but i suppose they just had to update a firmware again by the look of it...

I just tried recording a game on the NHL network and it would not let me. Is this a 5C problem like is discussed here? Is there an answer?

If the channel is not clear QAM then it will likely be 5C=1 and there isn't anything you can do about it. There are no work arounds out there to fix this.

I have a cheapo Philips DVD/harddrive recorder (around $300) that records via component input. I think Sony DVD/harddrive recorders also have component input.

But its probably not HD, its 480i.

Yes. Not sure where you read HD from in my post, especially when I was talking about DVD recorders. The issue I was replying to is whether you can record off component cheaply as you can see in my post above.

I just finished going through most of the HD channels in Winnipeg as I'd like try to capture some stuff through firewire on a spare PC.

Here's my 5C results:

301 FOX 5C=0
302 CBS 5C=0
303 MC 5C=0
304 SNET 5C=0
306 WDIV(NBC) 5C=0
307 WXYZ(ABC) 5C=0
308 TSN 5C=0
309 CBC 5C=0
311 CTV 5C=0
312 DSC 5C=0
313 A&E 5C=0
315 SCD 5C=1

50 TREE 5C=0 - my kids will love that!

This was pulled from a 6416.

When I go to diagnostic screen d11 the 1394 I/O Device: Active Ports reads 0 - does this mean none of the firewire ports are enabled?

Just shows you how off the map Shaw is with encryption on the HD channels. In Vancouver, 308 - 315 is 5C=1. Is there any ryhme or reason to this?

I think it was the Program at the moment that you trying to copy on most of the Channels that were not locked to 1 or they have changed them since I last tried a few months a go. most of the same channels for me were locked to 1.

Also In Winnipeg Using a Phase 3 6412

May Try again in coming weeks.

If you do not have any active ports, they will all show as 5C=0 BUT the moment you connect something to the firewire port, I 100% guarantee that some of those stations will display 5C=1

Well, I connected the firewire port to the PC earlier today - but until the kids go to bed I won't have a chance to check the copy protection status. I'll post an update when I get a chance, thanks for the heads up.

Looks like the only HD channels that have 5C=1 in Saskatoon are 314 (NGCHD) and 315 (SCHD). The rest are all 5C=0.

Well, I was able to capture a stream from 301 (FoxHD) as it was 5C=0.

It's great to be able to capture the stream, is there no way to browse the contents of the HD to pull the captures off using the firewire? Kind of a bummer to have to watch/playback everything you want to keep...
