Was just in Brandon over the weekend and saw on the Westman digital cable they have alot more digital cahnnel as well as Timeshifts. Why can a smaller cable provider offer this and shaw can not?
Here is the link

I do not see any HD here. If thats the case then there is nothing to compare.
A lot of channels nobody wants to watch. I only watch HD.

Westman does have HD, for some reason they don't list it on their website.

Lets see there are 80 plus sd channels on shaw, 9HD. I would say you have enough SD they can't be all SD.

On the DCT 6412, I can record maybe 15 hours of high definition for viewing when convenient. However, I can record more SD content than I could watch in months. Scanning is faster for SD as well. Even on my 46 inch I find the digital channels acceptable. I tend to use high definition for live viewing and SD for recording. I know I'd like to get some Canadian SD timeshifts.

I suspect one digital timeshift of each Canadian network would take less bandwidth than one high definition channel.

A typical cable company puts about 8-12 SD (digital) stations into one 6 MHz band. A typical cable company puts 2-3 HD stations in the same frequency.

This means that HD uses about 5X the bandwidth on average, therefore you could put about 40-50 timeshifts in place of the 9 HD channels...

Adding TSN HD and CBC HD was fine (for sports). However most of my TV viewing hours are spent watching US primetime. I live in Calgary, where HD primetime starts at 9 p.m. I need those US HD timeshifts so I can watch HD primetime at an earlier hour. Recording and watching the next day just isn't the same.

Please Shaw, I want some more... HD!!!

Smaller Cable Carriers have far less miles of Cable lines to maintain and less headends to upgrade according to a friend to who for Shaw here in Kelowna he said to upgrade a single head can cost millions of dollars the more cities you offer service in the more head ends you have thus the more expensive to upgrade some headends.

Another notable thing

Westman is 100% digital

ABC East HD
CBS East HD
FOX East HD
NBC East HD
PBS East HD
SportsNet HD
TSN HD
Movie Central HD - requires subcribtion

Actually I believe that Shaws few time shifts are digital (though terrible quality)... and we (on shaw) don't have to pay $2.95 nothing for HD and actually get at least one more HD channel.....
As much as I like to rag on Shaw, they are getting there... very... slowly..

as for timeshifts.... Please please please, more HD timeshifts... I hate SD programming..
