I get no spam at home.

I activated the spam filter on my Sympatico account and when I check my home address mailbox from work the spam bin usually show 15 - 20 spams that it has caught (and will automatically delete after 24 hrs).

I think the Sympatico spam filter alone is worth half my monthly fee.

I was getting dozens of SPAM emails daily, and even though I had
filters on my email client I was finding that I was adding new filters on a
daily basis as the SPAMMERS were coming up with different tricks. I
took a good long look at what was happening and decided to do something
about it.

I found that my email address was in the hands of SPAMMERs because
1. I had a hotlink to it on my web pages
2. I had used it to post on Usenet
3. I had signed guest books
4. I had posted my address on other people's websites.

With that it mind I decided to make some changes. The whole process
took two days, but in the long run it was worth it, as I've not had ONE
SPAM message since I made the changes.

1: I created two new addresses; one personal and one public.
2: I cancelled all of my online subscriptions.
3: I re-subscribed to the new public account.
4: I notified all of my friends and relatives of the address-change to
the new private account.
5: I encoded the hyper-links for email to the new public address
on the web pages (see the link below).
6: I sent test messages to myself from one address to the other to ensure
they were working properly. When I was certain that they were, I
then closed the old address.
7: I created a junk e-mail account for posting on Usenet
(A Yahoo, Hotmail-type account) and after posting with it on a
news group, it was only TWO DAYS until the SPAM started arriving
at that address. I never even look at that mailbox, but I still use it
on Usenet

Yes, most ISP mail handlers like Rogers via Yahoo mail have an anti-spam filter you can activate on the server. In my case, I just programmed the Yahoo mail filter to append the string "[Bulk]" in the messages it suspects as being spam. As I still download all these messages locally to my PC via Mozilla Thunderbird, it is then very easy to just create a filter on Thunderbird to dump all the emails with the string "[Bulk]" into the spam or thrash folder. I create additional filters that sort through these Bulk email because once in a while there are messages that are legit which are flagged by Yahoo as Bulk.

Thunderbird has a nice anti-spam filtering capability too but why let the work be done by the PC when it can be done on the server? Also, server anti-spam filter will always be more powerful than a pc solution (which can eat CPU resources) as they can easily flag spam coming from known ip addresses and domains that send these out.

I also have other email accounts on the server (say yahoo), the flagged (with Bulk) messages I don't even download to my local email client. These are the accounts I use for online forums, etc.

I have a simple way of doing it...

1) My primary "business" email address. I ONLY give it to family and close friends, or for banking and such.

2) My "friendly" email address. I give to online friends or to people I don't know too well. I also use this to sign up for sites that I trust, but it's an address I can throw away if I want.

Both 1 and 2 are set up to recieve on Outlook.

3) I have a third address called "spamspam@XXX.ca" and I use this for everythig else. I don't have it set up on Outlook, and I use www.mail2web.com to check it now and then. I'm quite sure that it is normally full.

I started getting spammed about two weeks ago, not a clue how, I'm not even running windows most of the time, I never use my main email anywhere but on my resume and things like that. I emailed abuse@sympatico.ca, they suggested I upgrade to the MSN service  which I made the HUGE mistake of doing earlier this morning. Since then I have lost all access to my second email address, the one I use everyday, and they have basically told me, welp tough luck, install outlook express. I use Thunderbird in both linux and Windows and heh on that address, I cannot even login through the web.

On my main account, if I try sending mail, it just times out. I can receive somewhat, if it feels like it. On the second account, nothing at all, I cannot send nor receive through tbird or -shudder- hotmail. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with tech support at 6 am, it led nowhere.

Does anyone have any suggestion besides going postal and getting a new isp?

I use Yahoo Canada email, I have not had any spam come through on my main accourt, they have good spam filters, and Auto Virus scanning, not to mention 1GB of storage. I stopped using Outook Express a long time ago, never have to worry about a virus etc. getting onto my computer. If you do not want to use web based email exclusively, then just give out your sympatico email to friends and family, for everything else use web based email.

There is a simply solution to all the spam,MSN email, started this and I was impressed, all you need is a feature to allow you to enter only those email addresses that you actually want email from and that is all that comes through, why on earth has no one provided this feature yet???? it seems so simple.
