bwalzer 2011-08-31, 06:22 PM I promised to post the results of my use of some recycled channel 12 antennas ( http://59.ca/~bwalzer/images/12p12_antenna.jpg ) after the transition. The CBC stuff will be pretty much the same as CKND on 40 so guess we're good:
Station Strength Quality
CKY(7) 89% 100%
CHMI(13) 85% 100%
CIIT(35) 73% 100%
CKND(40) 98% 100%
The signal strength isn't all that indicative. The VHF channels are seeing something like 10 dB of splitter loss (a 2-way and a 4-way). I am mostly trying to avoid noise in my environment so splitters are not really an issue. They attenuate the noise just as much as the signal.
The CKND(40) signal quality sometimes drops to something like 90% from time to time when the wind blows. I suspect something to do with all the leaves around here. It didn't do that in the winter. The much weaker CIIT(35) signal stays rock solid at 100%. Odd. I could pretty much throw a rock and hit the CKND transmitter.

builder112 2011-08-31, 07:08 PM where do you have your CS5 mounted?
Rooftop but not at the very peak (I used the sat dish J-pole left by the previous home owner)
builder112 2011-08-31, 07:30 PM Today my CS5 (still pointed at KNRR) brings in:
Analog 3
Analog 6
DTV 7
DTV 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 WDAZ
DTV 12
DTV 13
DTV 35
DTV 40
The VHF signals are stronger and better than the UHF (not surprising since CS5 is classified as a VHF only antenna) but looking at the specs. for the antenna I thought that the UHF transmitters were close enough that I wouldn't necessarily need a separate UHF antenna.
I was also pleasantly surprised to see WDAZ show up today (low strength though so not expecting that everyday)
Will keep experimenting with antenna direction while waiting for CBC to switch over. If after that my UHF's are still not behaving well, I will look at combining with a UHF antenna.
drexpressvu 2011-08-31, 09:15 PM I'm picking up CTV Regina @44% with no antenna and looks great. This blows Global Regina's coverage outta the water!
Jet Set 2011-08-31, 09:50 PM I am in the west end with a RCA ant751 mounted in my attic.
I can get 9.1 in the 70's fine but I am having trouble with 7.1 and 13.1 if I point west I can get 13.1 in the 50-60's but 7.1 drops to about 20 and if I point a little further south 7.1 is in the 50-60's but 13.1 drops to 20.
Would adding a preamp solve my problems or do I really need to put the antenna outside?
I took a splitter out of the equation and I doubled my low end signal going from 10 up to 20

acedetective 2011-08-31, 10:16 PM I'm in Riverbend, Winnipeg (near main and the perimeter).
My results are with an external, small high-vhf/uhf channel master CM 2016 antenna with preamp:
channel 9.1/40.1, 80%
7.1, 75%
35.1, 75%
13.1, 45%
I'm able to get a full perfect picture with all the channels.
CityTV (13.1) is chancy however, and I expected that, given its distance from Winnipeg. Some of the time I loose enough signal to drop the picture (atmospheric stuff, time of day stuff, I don't know) - but it's still watchable and way better than the snowy analogue it was before. It could also be that this TV is behind two splitters, but I'm to lazy to go upstairs and read results from the other TV.
I suspect CBC will be the same as 40.1.
Reed Solomon 2011-08-31, 10:41 PM I'm in West Kildonan and while I was picking up 13 (City TV) in analogue in the morning with a regular indoor antenna, I'm not getting anything now. It's ridiculously underpowered.
I also wasn't getting anything on 7.1, but I tried a different indoor antenna (a string type antenna) with an amplifier and I managed to get it at 50%. But it's very finnicky.. used to be I could get channel 7 analogue fuzzy but with minimal effort.
40.1/9.1 is still the best signal for me. I get it at 70-80% using the amplifier.
I used to be able to get 35 analogue easy with just a regular antenna, but now I need the amplifier and the antenna in just the right direction to get 35.1, which I can get I believe it was showing around 55% signal quality.
I do have an outdoor antenna I guess I'll have to put up perhaps over the weekend. I was hoping I'd be fine with the indoor antenna, but they've dialled their power down so low (City especially so) that since I'm at the bottom of a hill between Main St and Scotia and surrounded by houses it's not making things easy.
So basic summary: 7.1, 9.1, and 35.1 = I can get a decent lock. 13.1 = nothing. I've never been able to get channel 6 in any watchable way and it remains that way at present.
Also kudos to 7.1 for having Guide information. Nice.
acedetective 2011-08-31, 10:52 PM Looks like I spoke too soon. My CityTV (13) reception now seems to cut out (and be unwatchable) more than its on. I wish they'd boost the power there. It's weird, because it was pretty good an hour or two ago, but still near the bottom of the minimal required signal level.
Is JoyTV HD at all? I know its pushing out 1080i, but I don't think I've seen anything that's 16:9 or actually look 1080-ish. Looks like its all upscaled 480/4:3 material.
ohmagic 2011-08-31, 10:52 PM Hmmm, I'm in East St. Paul by the north perimeter. I only get 9-1 and 35-1. I'm using an amplified indoor antenna by a large window. I even whipped it outside for a bit and did a re-scan.
Only getting 9-1 and 35-1. Their both about 80-90% at all times.
What the hell is going on with 7-1 and 13-1? Why are they so weak that they don't even get picked up by the scan? I used to get really scrambled analog versions of both...
painter 2011-08-31, 10:56 PM Just hooked up old set of rabbit ears that I had laying around to see what I could pick up.I've got Global Regina coming in at 78% on channel 11-1 and CTV coming in at 82% on 2-1. Running on a Panasonic 58vt25. Picture looks pretty good. I live in the nortwest end close to the Normanview mall. Wonder what kind of signal a good antenna could bring in?
Haybomber 2011-08-31, 11:56 PM Signal from 7.1 is 99% here, nice audio and of course excellent quality picture. Nice to watch Canada AM in HD. CHMI and CIIT are next, will have to check later this evening. Will be interested in a signal report from Haybomber and a comparison to the analog signal if possible. Should be good and strong.

Getting 75% from CTV, 60% from CITY-TV, 25% from CIIT, 70% from KNRR. Digital farmervision baby! lol
Haybomber... are you using a amp or preamp? CKY 7.1 is coming in strong this morning at 75% signal strength.9.1 is still a hit and miss thing, I will try a tempory GH in the next
few days
I had been using a preamp I picked up at Princess Auto, but my tv had a low noise amp built in, so it really wasn't necessary. Hooking it up made it worse.
yohee 2011-08-31, 11:58 PM 7-1 CKY good reception don't care about signal strength
9-1 CKND good reception
13-1 CITY TV same as 7 and 9
35.1 Joy TV same as 7,9,13
As long I can all 4 channels I,m happy
Haybomber 2011-09-01, 12:02 AM I was also pleasantly surprised to see WDAZ show up today (low strength though so not expecting that everyday)
Where abouts are you located? It comes in once in awhile here in Morden. I imagine with 7 now digital, co-channel interference won't be as much of a problem when trying to pick up WDAZ.
Reed Solomon 2011-09-01, 12:22 AM Would CBC on 6 still being in analogue be causing interference with 7.1 with its lower power output?

I'm in Sanford, Manitoba. Sorry about the confusion -- still new to contributing to this forum.
My TVfool report is in my post from yesterday.

OddyOh 2011-09-01, 05:16 AM Update on my reception in southeast Regina townhouse, main floor:
At long last! CBKT (CBC Regina) in HD, 82% signal strength. CBKFT (SRC) at 100%. CKCK (CTV) coming in at 100% now, up from 92% earlier Wednesday. CFRE Global remains undetectable.
Pulling them in on my Terk HDTVA indoor antenna to a 4 or 5 year old Panasonic 58" plasma.
Also, my Mac's USB tuner stick, Elgato EyeTV Hybrid (2010 model) is picking up all 3 as well...86% CBKFT, 88% CKCK, 78% CBKT. No more blurry Hockey Nights! :D
CBC/SRC are both 720p, CTV is 1080i.

HayBomber, glad to hear you are getting them all. I suspect CKY and CHMI will be strong as they are both using highest antennas and power, but I am suprised with the CIIT signal being as strong as it is.
Builder12, I am in the Morris area and pick up WDAZ almost all the time when pointing the antenna south. You should pick up 16 PBS as well if your antenna does UHF, I have it often even through trees in the area.
Everything local this am is 99% both signal and Q except CBC's analog transmitters which look pretty sad about now.

Bungo Pony 2011-09-01, 08:52 AM I can pick up Global, CKY, and JoyTV with amplified bunny ears. I'm waiting for my dad to bring back my ladder so I can get up on my roof and finish hooking up my outdoor antenna!!!
allanGEE 2011-09-01, 09:44 AM Attic mounted SBGH made from 14-gauge wire thumbtacked to a piece of plywood, no reflector of any sort -- 25 feet of RG6 from antenna to connector, another 25 feet of RG6 to surge protector then to TV.
Easily picking up channel 7-1, strongest signal in the area.
Channel 9-1 is usually great, some occasional pixelation/drop out.
Channel 35-1 consistently solid.
No Channel 13-1 at all.
Hoping a better antenna, maybe adding a reflector, will still get me 13-1. Would be interested in knowing if anyone in Steinbach is getting it right now, and what your set up is.
markb 2011-09-01, 10:40 AM Anyone in Saskatoon know if CBKST is still on the air? Last night I was flipping through the analog channels and couldn't get either CBC or CBC French. Was wondering if the signals were gone?
