Does anyone else see this info(Description: CFSK-TV in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is transmitting a new DTV-HD channel UHF Channel 42, Frequency 638 to 644 MHZ. Call 306-665-6969 to report any interference problems.) when you hit the channel info button?

Not sure but call the number anyway and let them know how happy you are!

I'd call the number and request that they populate valid PSIP data (program descriptions, names, etc).

If i set the time on the tv to auto it is 6 hours out as well. They must be still be working on the PSIP data at this time.
Jase88 and j0dest3r How far away are you guys from the tower?

I'm in Ontario. The Global station out of Toronto doesn't have valid PSIP data either. We need to put pressure on these stations to fix this....

I live in west Winnipeg (just north of the grace hospital) and would like to buy an antenna to start investigating moving away from Shaw and the monthly bill they send me :) I've read the FAQ and several threads here but the FAQ seems to suggest large outdoor models while locals here just use smaller indoor models. What should I look at buying?

Glad you read through the OTA FAQ, but the next step is to download the Antenna Chart, which tells you what your best options are. ;)

Andrew,

but the FAQ seems to suggest large outdoor models while locals here just use smaller indoor models

Keep in mind that your requirements come September are quite different from today once CBC, CBWT, and possibly when CIIT move transmitter locations.

I put up a "tiny" Winegard Squareshooter SS2000 outside and plan to take down the old big antenna this fall.

CHMI 13 may be an issue being farther away but I will not know for sure until they switch to digital.

My house is a two story 4 level split so if I need to I can mount something on the roof and it would be pretty high up. I am just trying to figure out what the locals recommend I start out with that will be suitable for now and this fall. The square shooter looks like a recommended model but isn't suitable for lower channels. Will that be a problem in wpg?

@Andrew Pratt, CTV will flash-cut on channel 7 at their tower about 20 miles south. CHMI (CITY-TV) will be on channel 13 about 25 miles west. Global (40), CBC English (27) and French (51) will be in downtown Winnipeg.

With the square shooter, I am getting good reception on CTV 7 and perfect reception on Global 40 and CIIT 35. CHMI 13 is very grainy. CBC 6 and CBC French 3 are not watchable at all but when they switch to 27 and 51 they should be perfect too.

The antenna is mounted to the side of the house using a satellite mount since I do not have a ladder tall enough to get on the roof of my 2 story. House is in South St Vital.

Dr.Dave so what would you recommend? I guess what I'm asking is do I need something like the Channel Master CM 3679 or will Square Shooter suffice?

@Andrew Pratt

You need some sort of antenna that can receive the VHF-high band and the UHF band for Winnipeg after August so something like the CM 3679 that also does VHF-low would work but is a lot larger than you need.

That leaves you with either the HD769xP Line or the ANT-751 from the local antenna chart.

The thing is though, if you want ch 13 you will probably have to end up aiming your antenna more or less at the ch 13 transmitter as that is generally the difficult channel for Winnipeg. According to TVfool.com ch 13 is losing 4.4 dB during the transition so things are only going to get worse. That puts everything else either directly off the side or directly to the rear of whatever antenna you end up with.

If you can score one of those high gain VHF-high antennas that are left over from the era when everyone used to try to get ch 12 from the border you might want to start there.

I have 2 recovered high-gain VHF-high antennas in use right now. One aimed at ch 7 and another aimed at ch13 then combined into a single cable with a splitter. A low gain UHF antenna combined in with a UHF/VHF combiner/splitter gets everything with real solid signal levels. That is pretty obsessive and most people would not want to bother with all that but perhaps this will inspire some ideas.

bwalzer is correct on those. If you find supply a problem you have other options. For the smaller size range, an option to the RCA ANT-751 would be the Channel Master 2016 or the slightly bigger CM2020. For the larger size antennas an option to the Winegard HD769xP would be the Antennacraft HBU line, which perform equally or sometimes even better in some situations. I'm preparing Antenna Chart 7.3 for release in the near future with those and additional recommendations. :)

Given what was said about using multiple units am I right in assuming that a 2016, 2018 or 2020 would work but would have to be pointed at the weaker Channel 13 and hope that it can tune in the other channels? If so would the 3679 be a much safer choice? I've found the 2016 & 2018 online and are lot cheaper but I'll spend the extra if the larger units are worth the extra cost for me in my situation. If I mount it to the upper story it would be pretty high up.

Part B. I assume these will need to mounted to a pole so that they are above any potential snow cover in winter. Is in antic mounting an option?

I can't offer any any advice on specific antennas. I just wanted to point out the were several VHF channels at 20+ miles so the Square Shooter theoretically didn't seem like the best choice. I defer to those with more practical experience.

@Andrew Pratt

OK, how about the CM 2016 pointed more or less south east? The VHF part of the antenna is just the single element. It should receive 13 just as well off the back as the front. Every thing else would be in front of the antenna.

According to TVfool your signal levels are quite high and after the digital transition you won't have to worry about stuff like ghosting...

Andrew, Given your situation, I would recommend separate antennas for VHF-HI and UHF so that you can point them in different directions.

For VHF-HI, I figure a C5 (http://www.antennasdirect.com/cmss_files/attachmentlibrary/C5_%20technical_%20data_%20with_uhf.pdf) may be a good choice as it has a very wide Beam Width (if you point it towards KNRR (182 deg mag) it should hopefully still pick up both CKY and CHMI).

For UHF I would go with either a CM-4221 or a ClearStream2 and point it somewhere around 115 deg mag (half way between the UHF stations).

I live about 15km north of Winnipeg and hope to catch all of the local UHF channels that should be available by the end of August. I have been reading and hope that an RCA ANT751 will do the job. Will I need a distribution amplifier if I intend to split the signal to 4 (or more) feeds once in my house? Would a preamp be a better option or should none of this be necessary? Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Could you post the link to your TVFool report? That would help to assess your situation. :)
