: MB/SK - Winnipeg, Brandon, Regina, Saskatoon, Prairies - OTA
roger1818 2011-04-13, 02:53 PM According to the Heritage Canada (http://www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1298735760967/1298735761017) site, CFSK will transition by August 31. It is currently unknown when CFQC will transition but I would also expect it to be by August 31. As already discussed elsewhere, CBKST and CBKFT-1 will shut down.
mark_b 2011-04-13, 05:09 PM Nothing new yet. I'll send another email to the station to see what the update is. Last I heard was early to mid April.
JAS12 2011-04-13, 11:46 PM Turned on the antenna today and I can now receive KNRR down by the border. Finally! :)
Mike FM 2011-04-14, 07:43 PM I guess you didn't get what my wink meant roger1818 :)
That heritage site doesn't mean much to me. Sure CFSK analog will shut down August 31st but the DT signal is on another channel and antenna thus being ready to be powered up at any minute.
CFSK-DT (RF42) will be on before the end of the April.
Turned on the antenna today and I can now receive KNRR down by the border. Finally! :)
JAS12 are you in Winnipeg? Just posted a picture of the channel 12 transmitter in the flood (transmission equipment images I think the thread is called). Propagation should be good over water :)

markb 2011-04-15, 07:38 PM Heard back from Global today and apparently Global Saskatoon is in HD today on channel 42. I have not yet pulled in a signal yet but according to them they are HD.
89ragtopgt 2011-04-15, 11:35 PM They started boradcasting at 2:30Pm today.
89ragtopgt 2011-04-16, 12:38 AM @markb: What kind of antenna are you using? indoor or outdoor? brand, or home built? what kind of TV?
markb 2011-04-16, 11:43 AM I'm just using a regular indoor antenna, non amplified one. I believe it is a RCA brand bought at Future Shop. My tv is a Pioneer Elite. Right now I have the antenna plugged into my Bell 9242 receiver. Last night the Global signal was strong at 98-99%. Going to run it straight to the tv today and see what I get.
Anyone notice the global Winnipeg signal on channel 40 cutting in and out this morning? Was around 10am or so. Since then their signal strength here is down to 50% on their Winnipeg transmitter, was in the 80-90% range before. The Starbuck transmitter was fine and shows same signal as usual (VHF). Hope it is just snow on the antenna causing SWR power cutback... Should have melted by now though...
I should mention other UHF signals out here are consistent with normal propagation.

Mike FM 2011-04-16, 04:17 PM Are you guys able to receive the SD sub channel? It should come up as 42.2 or 42.3 etc...
stampeder 2011-04-16, 04:47 PM They're running a sub-channel? That's not Global's usual practice anywhere else.
Mike FM 2011-04-16, 05:13 PM Yes, absolutely. It's the same with Winnipeg. Although, I did make a mistake with my above post. The SD sub channel should be mapping as 4.2 or 4.3 because of virtual channel mapping. The SD is lousy though as 2 - 4 Mbps is allocated to it.
stampeder 2011-04-16, 08:21 PM Odd that they're bothering to run an SD sub-channel.
JAS12 2011-04-17, 12:24 AM JAS12 are you in Winnipeg? Just posted a picture of the channel 12 transmitter in the flood (transmission equipment images I think the thread is called). Propagation should be good over water :)

No, I am down by the border; about 20 Kms north/north-east of Emerson. I am getting nothing digital out of any of the Winnipeg stations.
markb 2011-04-18, 10:21 AM Yes I'm getting the SD sub channel on channel 4.2. Same signal strength as the HD channel.
stampeder 2011-04-18, 12:55 PM The sub-channel will have the exact same signal levels as the main channel since they're both part of the same data stream being broadcast. Your tuner is the point at which they become separate channels. :)
Here's the OTA FAQ entry on Sub-Channels and Remapping:

markb 2011-04-18, 01:12 PM According to CFSK, the SD sub channel will be shut down in the fall when they have completed the switch to HD.
stampeder 2011-04-18, 01:22 PM What is the aspect on their SD channel - is it a letterboxed version of the HD channel?
markb 2011-04-18, 02:59 PM Same as the analog channel. 4:3 aspect, with HD programs being letterboxed.
