BLOODY WICKED!!!

It works for me too PERFECTLY with a standard old combo Rabbit-Ear/Loop VHF-UHF indoor antenna. 85% signal strength. No fiddling with the antenna at all, it's really strong. I'm in the Garden City area (about a block from the mall).

This is my first experience with Over-The-Air digital ATSC. I'm liking it, I hope the other Winnipeg stations will do this soon too. I'd like to be able to add an ATSC capping card to my HTPC and use it as a 2nd tuner.

Excellent news for Winnipegers.
Now, tell all your friends: it's people like you who are essential in spreading the word about antenna television.

ADD: I'm also curious if the broadcast area for CKND-DT is truly as restricted as the propagation predictions suggest.

I just went to the 24-hour Wal-Mart across the street on McPhillips and picked up an extra indoor antenna for the HDTV in my computer room. I have an extra HDTV sitting next to my computer here that I like to use to watch tv in the background while using my computer. In the past it only has SD channels though (even though it is an HDTV) because I never wanted to buy an extra HDbox from Shaw just for that TV, now at least I can watch 1 HD station on it so that's kind of nice. I'm looking forward to CBWT (CBC-Winnipeg), CKY (CTV-Winnipeg), and CHMI (Citi-TV Winnipeg) adding ATSC transmitters soon.

I can see the OTA option being really nice for 2ndary and 3rd TVs in the house where you don't want to have to buy/rent an extra HD box from your cable company but would like to have at least "some" HDTV.

downbeat: where can I find this propagation info you speak of?

I can't remember which day it was, but the 10 o'clock news was in a 16:9 format, 4:3 with a fancy border to fill into 16:9. I switched from SAT, to OTA channel 9 and same thing. I suspected that they were either testing their digital signal, or had already turned it on. I'll have to enter it on my tuner so I can get it digitally, and run antenna feeds to the rest of the TVs again.

I've been keeping an eye open at http://www.user.dccnet.com/jonleblanc/Canada_TV_Stations/DT.html and it still says nothing, but all the same, hurray!

tested it out, scanned and got 2 channels, 9.1 and 40.1.. too bad nothing good is on, but they get my viewership by default :)

tested it out both on my TV and on a dinky portable TV with a cheap RCA adapter, both work great. PSIP data shows up as Global Winnipeg, but whatever. They got it done before Christmas, so excellent (my prediction was within range). Took a couple more scans for me to lock on to the digital signal wheras the analogue channel 9 popped up easily as usual, but once they work out the bugs (like the letterboxed clearly SD commercials), It'll be great. Congrats Global. Boo-urns to every other station in Winnipeg for being stuck in the 60's.

kinda ironic though that Global is owned by Shaw now.

I hope your definition of "soon" is "more than 9 months".. though I hope we see other stations at least flash cut to digital now that Global has blazed the trail and given people a reason to at least get a converter to test their signal with.

Well I hope he is!

Way to go Global, can't wait so shame Kelly at CKY.

BTW my Samsung shows all bars (5x5) in NE WPG. I guess we get a good football game Sunday.

When you are posting to report your reception of Global and the other Winnipeg TV stations please give your neighbourhood and/or nearest major street corner in your reception posts. No need for your address as we respect your privacy. Here's an important note about posting the best info in here: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=125161

Seeing your general location and TVFool report in your reception report posts will greatly help other members, and it allows us to track how well the stations are doing with their coverage areas.

cheers :)

Not really. The stations owned by cable companies seem to be much more interested in OTA than the ones not. Shaw has proposed a much more complete transition for GlobalTV than Canwest was planning (or any other network for that matter).

Interesting. I hope they open up the airwaves to digital here in the Ottawa region soon. It would be cool to watch SNL over the air, and the dozens of other Global shows.

Once again, the article has said some things that could easily mislead consumers:

"Of course, you can only watch it if you have an HD receiver," - TRUE
"antenna," - TRUE
"a flat-screen TV" - FALSE
"and are not hooked up to cable, satellite or MTS Television." - FALSE

I've read articles where 99% of what they wrote was wrong, at least only 50% of this paragraph was wrong. I have a TiVo and a Bell PVR. Both allow me to watch digital shows OTA and both will play into a standard 4:3 television if you wish. I don't have a 4:3 TV anymore, but I know it would work if I had one.

I am hooked up to satellite, and I can view these OTA stations just as easily as I can view my satellite feed. Having cable or satellite should have nothing to do with the inability to pick up OTA stations. It doesn't even make sense.

Arrrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!!! :mad:Of course, you can only watch it if you have an HD receiver, antenna, a flat-screen TV and are not hooked up to cable, satellite or MTS Television. What a bunch of hooey! I see nobody stepped up and put their name on that article's byline.

Remember that the AU status means "Authorized By Industry Canada And May or May Not Yet Be Operational" so it is correct, just not very informative on IC's part. Unfortunately I've seen some stations that have been operational for very long periods of time without being updated to OP status.

You're happy right! Whoever wrote that was smart not to sign it. They made it sound as though Global single-handedly just invented a new way of watching television (like we did years ago before cable).

Finally Winnipeg has joined the OTA HD group. I bought a new TV but I don't have an antenna so I will look here for what I need. I don't know if I can receive a good signal DT and it puzzles me why Global TV would provide HD when that gives me one more reason to cancel Shaw.

Edit: I have a new Sony EX500 but I don't have an HD receiver. ;) Looks like I'm stuck with Shaw. And they wonder why I don't take the paper.

In Transcona with the monoprice powered antenna and running it through my Bell 6141 receiver I'm getting a signal of 84% with the antenna just sitting on my couch.

Excellent picture by the way. Glad to finally see some uncompressed HD signals.

I spent some time yesterday telling the local papers about the new digital channel in Winnipeg and the Free Press was nice enough to pick up on it with this article (http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/global-winnipeg-sends-hd-signal-over-airwaves-112119539.html). Not inaccurate but bits seem slightly misleading. Pretty good considering. It would of been nicer if they had of mentioned the channel...

Global doesn't broadcast the NFL jets. CITI has the NFL games. CiITI works almost without an antenna DT but is still SD.

Double hooey.

If your TV is relatively new, you don't need a separate HD box- if the OTA signal is strong enough, you could just connect a coat hanger and get free HD TV. All/most TVs these days have a digital/HD tuner already built in.
