conundrum2, Global's DTV transmitters are all in 1080i 16:9 always, so as downbeat says it really is all dependent on the source material feeding into it.

It will be HD like Stampeder said, it is in the rest of the citys in Canada that have digital. BTW it's the whole point of going digital. I can't wait.

BTW I have some good sources at CTV that owe me big... I will contact them and let you know.

Nope, not like that. The CRTC has regulations about it. All DTV stations in Canada have been in HD on their main sub-channel.

A poster in the Shaw forums said Global Winnipeg was down on that system. Is the OTA signal down too?

It turns out it was a Shaw problem and not a Global one.

So does anybody have a timeline for the Global OTA to go live in Winnipeg?

Very interested in trying out my ATSC tuner.

Not at this point - the last I heard was in Post #214 - 216.

You might try picking up KNRR out of Pembina ND, it has been broadcasting ATSC since January sometime. It is on TV channel 12 (205MHz thereabout), and not far from Winnipeg.

Are people getting KNRR reliably in Winnipeg?

I have been wondering if I it is worth putting up an antenna on the roof this summer -- two story in south Winnipeg so I can get some good height on the antenna.

Right now, I have an old antenna installed in the garage rafters and it does an adequate job for a few local stations but it does not see KNRR at all. Too low to the ground and too much signal loss from being inside I guess...

If you can find one of those channel 12 antennas they used to sell in Winnipeg you should pick it up well. Their digital signal is just as strong as the analog signal before they changed over. I live 50km south of Winnipeg using a roof mounted antenna, and I pick up 12.1 no matter which direction I point it.
The 12.1 signal is only 480i SD, no HD content so far.

Next project here is to add a good UHF antenna to pick up the Prairie Public Television signal on channel 16.

If you post a link to your TVFool results, we can better determine your chances.

KNRR shows in the red zone so it is a possibility. Distance is 58 miles with NM(db) of 9.4 and Pwr(dbm) of -81.5

Yes, it certainly looks like you should be able to receive it with a good outdoor antenna (assuming there aren't any nearby obstructions in the way).

The bad news is it may be difficult to receive both KNRR and CHMI without either a rotor or an A/B switch since they are on adjacent channels and almost 90 degrees apart.

As part of approving this deal (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=122997) here's what the CRTC said:The Commission reminds the licensee that it expects broadcasters operating in the mandatory markets identified in Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-167 to convert their full-power, over-the-air analog transmitters to digital by 31 August 2011. CHNU-TV and CIIT-TV are both located in mandatory markets and are expected to convert to digital by that time.http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2010/2010-167.htm

CIIT's post-transitional channel allotment is UHF channel 35.

CIIT is still broadcasting analog on channel 35 from downtown Winnipeg. Real strong transmitter. Creating havoc with other radio equipment I take care of on the same building. CBC has an FM transmitter there too; I suspect they both share the same tower.

Ciit broadcasts from the rogers tower just south of Winnipeg, not from downtown. This tower also carries 92.1/99.1/100.7/103.1 fm stations as well.

Yes, it seems to be mixing with another service (or several), so I thought it was down town. Need more filters!
Are there any more plans for that Rogers tower? The top looks like it could support a decent antenna stack... maybe they plan to add something when the digital switchover takes place...

Canwest has applied for a post-transitional digital transmitter for CKND-TV:
