: Shaw price reductions?
Quill 2005-11-08, 07:51 PM I have been putting off getting a 6412 in hopes that the price (which has stagnated for months) may come down...
Anyone know if my hopes are in vain? Any news on price reductions?
Thanks!
Nyk0n 2005-11-09, 02:19 PM I sure hope so as BEV's dual Tuner is cheaper although I hear BEV is getting out of the purchased equipment business and going to a rent ONLY
yuck i like to own my stuff not rent everything
I've been waiting as well. I'm thinking now that the price won't drop. Several Reasons.
Last December when they had the 6208 on for $500.00 , Shaw said they were doing it because Motorola gave them a break on the cost of the unit. That may be but I think they were also trying to get rid of stock as the 6412's were brought in starting in January. I don't see Shaw trying to rid of stock anticipating a new box coming in.
As Shaw seems to only use ( or can't use others such as SA which I think Rogers uses) Motorola cable boxes, I don't see anything new from Motorola that Shaw will be using anytime soon. Motorola has a new box called the dct-3412 which is a dual tuner HD-PVR. I think it may be starting to be deployed with Comcast in the States. The 2 main differences that I can see with this box is that its capable of using a 300 gig hard drive ( for some strange reason, only a 120 gig hard drive is available as I'm sure people would pay for the 300 gig if it was available ) and its only for all digital systems (no analog tuners). I don't see Shaw having an all-digital service anytime soon.
The 6400 hundred series supposedly has a dct-6416 version but I don't know of any Cable organization using one. I'll be surprised that these ever will be released as certainly by now this should of happened.
Shaw seems to only drop price on a box when something new is coming in. I don't think something new is coming in. This is why I think the 6412 will remain as $748 over the short term.
Hi, you can get the box for like $697 at Visions or Future Shop or A&B Sound. Not much difference but still $50 less than Shaws price. A lot of the forum users including myself took advantage of the online $50/off of purchases over $400 or something like that from Visions. Just print it off and whoever of those retailers who have it in stock will match Visions price. At least I found that in Vancouver with A&B and Future.
kreep 2005-11-13, 12:21 AM Just get it on ebay. I bought a new 6412/200 for $330 CND inc shipping.
ertyu 2005-11-13, 12:55 PM Kreep, and did they activate it?
kreep 2005-11-13, 02:09 PM Yup, I had no problem at all activating it. I had the lady I bought it from send me the GI number and UL (i think that's it) number and shaw entered it into their system. When it got here I just plugged it in and let it download for a few hours and that's all it took.
mab473 2005-11-13, 08:57 PM Hey Kreep, was it a brand new box or was it previously subscribed to? Also could you tell me if it was branded by any other cable company or was it an unlabled box?
Thanks,
Michael
kreep 2005-11-13, 09:51 PM It was brand new, never been on a network before. It wasn't branded any cable company, just has Motorola on it. This is the ebay sellers user naem: sjhotrodcars
She had quite a few of these when I bought one from her. A local guy here in BC bought 3 from her to sell out here.
Not sure if posting ebay user names is allowed in here, if not let me know and I'll edit the post.
mab473 2005-11-14, 02:04 AM Any chance this local BC guy still has one for sale?
Rainuck 2005-11-14, 06:20 PM Does anyone have a link to the Visions $50 off offer? I can't see anything on their site and I was planning on getting a 6412 tomorrow.
magnet 2005-11-15, 10:26 AM The Visions coupon has been removed from their site. However, their 5% price match policy still exists. Check the price at Soundsaround and A&B Sound. Visions will be happy to beat the price by a full 5% - not the difference - but a full 5%! For example: if the price at Visions is $700 and Soundsaround is selling the unit for $699, you'll get it for $664.
Rainuck 2005-11-15, 12:48 PM Thanks, I'll try that...and apologies, I should probably have asked in the motorola forum
badmotorfinger 2005-11-15, 07:39 PM How does it work with Shaw if you are an existing Customer? Am I able to get the "Programing Credits" if I pick up a new HD box at Best Buy or wherever? I have an older digital box but would like to get a HD box.

I believe that you only get the programming credits if you are a new customer, but when I bought my DCT6214 they gave me the promo even though I had been using the DCT6200 for a couple years already. It may depend on the CSR.
captaincanuck12 2005-11-16, 12:50 PM It's great when you get your tuners for much cheaper than what SHAW sells em for... but you have to go through an activation battle. I spent 2 months haggling with SHAW and they still wouldn't activate my unit and had to resell it.
The reason you get such a discount on E-Bay is because most of those units are stolen STB's. It's a risk. And SHAW will not give you any technical support if something goes awry.
Just my two cents.

I got the credits with very little problem. I called on Sunday Nov 13th and asked for them. They told me no until I threatened to cancel and hook up Telus and Bell and they offered me the PPV's only. I said that I'd still cancel Shaw and he put me on hold for 2 min and came back with the full offer. About 5 mins total talking, although I spent 15 mins on hold. This was in Calgary.
Surfwood 2005-11-17, 06:56 PM Instead of starting a new thread I thought this was kind of related to this topic. I to was wondering about any price reductions from SHAW. I e-mailed SHAW asking what would be the benefits of purchasing the HD PVR from them as opposed to A&B Sound or Visions for example, which I most likely could get a reduced price and also take advantage of the program credits. This is the reply I just recieved:
Thank you for taking the time to contact Shaw Customer Care. We
appreciate the opportunity to correspond with you.
Since the equipment is exactly the same, the only things that you may
want to consider when purchasing from a 3rd party retailer are their
terms of purchase. For example, when you purchase the equipment from
Shaw, it is considered a final sale. Parties like Future Shop generally
have a 30 day return policy in place, where you can return the equipment
if you are unsatisfied.
If you need any further help or assistance, please consult our website
at http://www.shaw.ca or call us at 604.629.8888.
Thank you for choosing Shaw.

Just wanted to make sure that this was correct since I know that some of the CSR's are not always up to speed. Is there is no advantage to buying it directly from SHAW? No longer warranty period? Nothing?
Arcanum 2005-11-17, 07:30 PM The problem with buying 3rd party is that you will have to go through them if something goes wrong. My parents 6208 went on the fritz and they had to take it back to Futureshop where they bought it. FS sent it in for servicing - to Shaw I will point out - but it couldn't be fixed. They got a new one under warranty, but it took a week and a half. If you buy from Shaw, you can walk a broken one in the door and they will give you a new one.
If you take it back to Shaw directly would they know who you bought it from or care? The box is still a Shaw system box sold through a 3rd party retailer.
