roger1818 2010-03-04, 10:07 AM but not CJMT-DT. CKXTDT3 comes in even though it's from the South. I guess it's not worth it for me to invest much more just to get one more station. I'm glad you guys told me about the CRC stations before I wasted money on trying to receive them. :)
As mlord said, CKXTDT3 is broadcasting from Camp Fortune to the north. It is CFMT-DT (OMNI1) along with CJMT-DT (OMNI2) that are broadcast from Herbert's Corners to the south.
tvlurker 2010-03-04, 10:15 AM The CRC station on channel 38 is back. They're broadcasting in HD this time, at about 11 Mb/s. The video loop is a bit longer, and more interesting.
There is also a scroll across the bottom with an email address for more info.
The PSIP station name is no longer "Diver" -- now its "CRCER". The virtual channel is still 3.1.
for those that normally receive WCFE, are thee any issues?
The CRC channel 38 transmitter is located at Shirley's Bay.
TVFool predicts coverage from Russell to Buckingham to McNAb to North Grenville (http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=80&q=call%3dCRC-DT-1%26type%3dD%26sitenum%3d0).
Channel 46 is showing the new loop in the East end. PSIP for this station is "CRC". I haven't seen WCFE in a few days. I will check for it later today.
Not sure "which" channel 46 I'm getting. Maybe -4? They can't all be at full power at the same time.

They could be. from what I've read, channel 46 must be the test Single Frequency Network they're working on.
I never get a whiff of 46 at home in Craig Henry, but it could be that the antenna I've been using isn't directional enough for any one of the four signals to have 15 dB more signal than the others.

Exactly. The whole point is to synchronize the broadcast of the same program on the same channel from multiple locations and let the tuner's multipath circuitry deal with the time delayed signals.

Or it could be your tuner is having troubles with the "multipath" distortion.

I'm not usre. It's not registering any signal strength at all.
usually for ATSC signals below the tuner's capture threshold, the software reports a fairly decent signal strnegth, but a Signal Quality of 10% or less.
I'm not seeing any blips at all.
Perhaps with bad multipath, it can't even see the ATSC pilot?
Don't forget, I have no way of knowing whether the transmitters are actually on at the time I happen to scan for 46.
Roger, do you see anything on 46 out in Stittsville? You're less likely to have to deal with multipath out there.
knudby 2010-03-09, 08:22 PM Hi, I've been browsing this forum, and have decided to give OTA a try. I live in Ottawa, in Carlington right next to the Experimental Farm, in a two-storey house. I'm planning a roof-mount, so....
- Any tips on which antenna to go with? The selection chart seems to suggest the Winegard Square Shooter, but I'm curious if anybody in Ottawa has experience with this antenna, good or bad.
- And... once I have an antenna, do I just point it towards Gatineau Hills and fine-tune as necessary?
- I'm reasonably handy. Any tips on antenna mounting, or am I better off with a professional installer?
Cheers,
Anders

Carlington lies directly between Ottawa's two TV transmitter sites at Camp Fortune (4/6/9/13/20*/22*/24/25*/30/34/40) and Herberts Corners (11/14/17*/27*/32/43/60/65/66*).
Your antenna choice really depends on what channels you really want. For the digital channels, it may be enough to point the antenna at either CF or HC, and the signals from the other site will come through the back. You may have to take the reflector off, though. (This will probably also improve reception of the analog channels, at least for the next year and a half before they switch off.)
Type your address inot the Online TV MAps feature of at TVFool.com to get a feeling for the channels available in your area. Ignore the CRC stations, are they are temporary experimental stations.

rajugsw 2010-03-10, 05:58 AM I haven't posted in a while so here's an update :
All winter my DBGH 10 with NAROD's has been rock solid. ABC in Watertown NEVER dropped out. OMNI 2 has returned (due to the warming of the earth I suppose - I'm of axis to HC), and CBS is hit and miss (need to build a proper VHF-LO YAGI).
And now I'm in the process of setting up MYTHTV in ubuntu with a Hauppage ATSC tuner and an old ATI 64MB DVI video card connected to my Home Theatre(yep, working on a HTPC).
cheers,
rajugsw

thanks for the update.
You mean VHF-HI for WWNY-DT on channel 7.
rajugsw 2010-03-10, 04:28 PM my bad, I meant VHF-HI
bowhunter 2010-03-10, 07:08 PM I think I am right near you rajugsw.
I am having trouble getting WWNY 7-1 or FOX on 7-2 out of Watertown. I have experimented with my little Delhi and can get it some of the time only. I am running a super-Delhi and CM4228 on tripod mount well above the roof with a rotor.
My CM4228 is useless for this VHF channel I know because of the frequency.
I get WWTI no problem but TV Fool seems to think I should get WWNY better than WWTI? They operate at about the same power it says.
Does anyone else have issues with 7-1 signal in eastern Ontario. It is really the only other channel I want to get until the lazy-bones locals go DTV...
Any suggestions?
tvlurker 2010-03-10, 08:59 PM bowhunter,
Make sure that if you use a preamp, that you have the FM Trap turned on. The second harmonic of CHLK Perth falls within Channel 7. You're also under 4 miles from Black's corners -- FMFool predicts -9dBm levels for CKBY 101.1. Although the second harmonic would affect channel 11 and not channel 7, it may be causing other distortions that would affect channel 7. Back in the analog days, did you ever see wavy lines on channel 7?

To receive channel 7, you will need something better for VHF-HI than either a CM-4228 or a Super Delhi. I haven't seen any stats for the Super Delhi, but just looking at it (see promo sheet (http://www.wade-antenna.com/Wade/Super%20Delhi.pdf)), I don't think it provides very much gain on VHF (especially since it is designed for "Channels 2 to 83").
My suggestion would be to look at something like a Winegard YA-6713 or YA-1713 for VHF-HI.
bowhunter 2010-03-11, 06:57 PM Thanks for the replies. I am using a preamp and now I am wondering about the FM trap thing...
I can't remember how I hooked up inside the amp housing before I put it up! I shall check.
You have me wondering too about other interference as I am only 1.5 miles to the CKWS tower at Franktown. Would that have any bearing on my channel 7 signal? I never had my Delhi up here before at this house as we were Bell subscribers since day one. (Not any more though) I brought it home from my cottage which was even further north than my location now and I used to get WWNY no problem there in the analog days.
These little antennas were great on channels 2-13 but not so good above that in UHF. I am pondering now if it has been damaged since we moved it home? I may have to pull it down now that the good weather is here and investigate.
roger1818 2010-03-12, 09:56 AM I am using a preamp and now
What pre-amp are you using?

Not likely. First of all UHF stations won't cause interference due to harmonics on VHF. Secondly CKWS-TV-3 is a low power transmitter and isn't likely to cause overload. If you could post a link to your TVFool results, it would help though.
I brought it home from my cottage ...

Not sure what your cottage is like, but if there were lots of trees and the antenna was not higher than them, this may be may be more due to UHF signals not traveling through the trees as well as VHF. The UHF signals may also have been weaker to begin with. Looking at the antenna, I would have thought it would be better with UHF than VHF, but that is just an educated guess.

Actually, there is a possibilty that 36 could mix with CITY 65 or CJMT-DT 66 from Herberts Corners to cause intermod problems for 7 ((65-36)*6MHz)=174Mhz, which is channel 7), so it's a good idea to use separate antennas, preamps and maybe even cables for VHF and UHF.
bowhunter 2010-03-12, 06:56 PM Thanks again.
I have a CM Spartan 0068DSB amp on my CM4228 and the Delhi has it's own amp built in. I am running separate RG6 from each antenna into the house and have experimented both straight to the TV individually and together thru a combiner.
Here's my TV Fool info too:

stampeder 2010-03-17, 12:09 PM I've put those posts in the thread mentioned in Post #1532 to see if we get a hit.
mlord 2010-04-05, 04:35 PM As part of my recent foray into the el-cheapo UHF antenna (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=123183) realm, I did get to salvage the owner's original VHF yagi.
It's a Delhi something or another, six element yagi. The two active elements are folded dipoles (triple fold).
Anyone interested in this?
It should be good for Global (6), and probably CHCH and CTV.
