If I don't have the local phone service, can I still get DSL service?

I asked 3web about this question, the sales told me "yes", it's called "naked DSL"; but their tech support guy said "no".

This is very similiar with the cable service. In my aera, we had to pay extra $5 monthly to get cable internet access if don't subscribe their cable TV service, but that's the old story, now they waive the $5 charge.

Anyone has such situation on it?

Sympatico offers "naked DSL" also known as dry-loop dsl. Not sure if its available in all areas or not. Don't know about other DSL providers though.

as ryoung said SYmpatico offers naked dsl service or "dry loop" as it is called by sympatico. anywhere sympatico service is available, dryloop is also.

go here http://www.bell.ca/shop/PrsShpInt_Landing.page and type in your neighbours phone numbe rto see if dry loop is available to you.

I looked up the rates for naked DSL. There is an extra $15 to $25 monthly charge for the line, depending on your location. Since a phone line is $25-$30, you might as well just get a phone.

I know that TELUS will sell DSL now without a phone line. I asked as I was thinking of dropping the phone line and going to Vonage.

with bell there is no extra charge for the service. it's the same price as a standard dsl service.

nem, who is clarifying that not all companies charge the extra price

I am using an independent ISP on the Bell network. If I switched to Sympatico my DSL would go up $15 a month anyway. It may appear that Bell is not charging for naked DSL but I will pay one way or another. :(

As far as I understand it, though I've not been able to verify it for sure, so long as you switch to a CLEC your ILEC is not allowed to charge you to use the loop as per CRTC regulations. This would probably not be the case if you got rid of your landline and only used a cell phone, but switching to someone like Vonage for local service you should not have to pay to use the copper for DSL.
