: Slingbox Video Streamer Discussion
ok here is what iam trying to do so bare with me while i try to explain this, i live in an apt facing the wrong way to point a satellite dish. my friend lives in the same building but 6 floors higher than me. i want to install a dish at his place and have two irds one for him and one for me. now i know that video senders wont work because the distance is two far, but can i use a sling box to get sound and video to my tv with out having to past the audio and video to my computer will this be able to work and can i watch something in real time or will the picture be crap to watch. i have high speed cable
thanks in advance and i hope i have made sense in trying to explain what i want to do
wysiwyg 2007-08-05, 09:16 PM It would work, but the quality will depend on the speed of you friend's upstream speed. Even at maximum 800kbps, it will be far from standard broadcast quality.
roguechameleon 2007-10-09, 05:27 PM Here's a question...
Is there a way to leverage the use of a slingbox to capture the content that is saved to a PVR? Specifically, could I somehow capture the programming I have recorded on my Rogers 8300HD?

Is there a way to leverage the use of a slingbox to capture the content that is saved to a PVR? Specifically, could I somehow capture the programming I have recorded on my Rogers 8300HD?I believe you mean stream rather than capture - the content is captured on the hard drive of the SA8300HD - you want to stream it out over the internet or on your LAN.
I don't have a slingbox but I bet that you should be able to do this - the seem to advertise this functionality for TiVos so I don't know why you shouldn't be able to do it with a cable PVR.
roguechameleon 2007-10-09, 07:04 PM Actually, I was thinking of a way to copy the content on the PVR to my computer's HDD. I have a bunch of "go diego go" episodes recorded on my PVR that I'd like to burn. Unfortunately there is no quick way to get that media off the PVR right now...
cyclo 2007-10-09, 07:23 PM Applian sells a software that can record video streams from the original Slingbox. However you could do this only on older versions of the SlingPlayer as SlingMedia started encrypting the stream soon after on the later versions of their SlingPlayer. This is to most likely to prevent recording the stream and thus avoid potential lawsuits from Hollywood studios and corporations.
So to answer the question, you can if you have the Slingbox Classic and you have the pre-encrypted version of the Slingplayer plus you have a copy of Applian's Slingcorder.
Applian's Slingcorder.....called "At-Large Recorder".
I think you need Slingplayer prior to version 1.3 (?)
acreeker 2007-12-29, 09:40 PM Applian has come out with ver 2.3 of the At-Large Recorder. It works with all the slingboxes and firmware versions. The encryption is no longer a problem.
Larry 2007-12-29, 10:05 PM Just tried it.. it works great.
wysiwyg 2007-12-30, 01:31 PM I tried and bought it as well last month when it came out. Ended up returning it due to so many bugs...
1. I couldn't get the output files to convert properly to mpeg4 format. This was with many different 3rd party conversion tool and also Applian's own conversion tool.
2. Very often, when scheduling a recording, it would never stop at its deignated time, but rather continue until I moved the mouse to stop the screen saver. (not convenient when recording something overnight...)
3. Adjusting the video size who result in terrible results. (Eg. Recording in 640/480 instead of 320/240) would result in much worst feed of about 250kbps instead of about 500kbps. (The upload stream can handle over 800kbps).
4. Technical Support could not help resolve anything.
This software felt like beta and they still have many bugs to resolve.
p.s. I tried this on 2 different computers, one being XP PRO while the other was Vista Ultimate...
Does anyone know if there exists a Mac version of this? I suppose I could try it in VMware Fusion on my Mac, but I'm guessing a native Mac app would perform better....
cyclo 2007-12-30, 06:05 PM Applian has come out with ver 2.3 of the At-Large Recorder. It works with all the slingboxes and firmware versions. The encryption is no longer a problem.
I tried the free trial version (limited to 5 minutes) and it appears like it does not support the Slingbox PRO properly, just the Classic. In my case the recorded video is compressed widthwise when recording both regular and HD programming. I tried various resolutions and it always resulted in this problem.
I posted this issue on the Slingcommunity forums where they had a thread about recording using Applian as well as another open source software (downloadable from Sourceforge) and a member said he had the same issue and emailed it to Applian. Applian responded that when it came to recording streams properly for the PRO, the problem is not that simple to fix (hence causing the compressed video) but they will look into it in an upcoming release.
In the meantime I will try it on my Slingbox Classic but I haven't made up my mind to drop 50 bucks on the At Large... I might just download the free recorder off Sourceforge even though it is only command line.
Larry 2007-12-30, 06:16 PM I tried the demo using my Slingbox PRO and the video looked fine. No problem at all.
cyclo 2007-12-30, 06:58 PM Have you tried recording High Defenition (HD) broadcasts (Widescreen 1080i)? If so, when you play back the video is it still in widescreen (16:9)? I have the PRO connected to a Scientific Atlanta 3250 HD via the component outputs using the Slingbox PRO dongle. I might try the S-Video output to see if it works.
cyclo 2007-12-30, 08:17 PM Well I tried the S-Video inputs instead of the Component inputs via the dongle add-on and it appears the aspect ratio problem is gone. The downside of using the S-video inputs is that High Definition (HD) broadcast recordings are limited to 640 x 480 resolutions with black bars appearing on the top and bottom of the screen.
I might still buy the software as I could use it to record TV shows that I could not catch instead of downloading these off bittorent. I guess you could also use converters to enable playback of these recording on a portable player.
cyclo 2007-12-30, 09:33 PM Sorry to spam this board but I think there is a bug in the setting... I tried editing my response above (it has been less than an hour since I posted it) but it wouldn't allow me.
Anyway here is the latest from the Slingcommunity forum. A Sling insider on the Slingcommunity forums advised me to hold off on the Applian purchase until at least after the CES (Jan 7 to 10, 2008). Apparently there is a rumor that Sling might add a recording capability to the Slingplayer by then.
joelchandran 2009-10-28, 07:05 PM Does anyone know how to connect a slingbox to a Motorola 6200 hdbox? It says to use the infrared buster but i don't know where its located on the box. Any help would be great. Thanks.
wysiwyg 2009-10-28, 07:19 PM The infrared streamer is a small device that hooks up to the Slingbox and you put the infrared piece in front of the receiver you want to control. It comes with the Slingbox package and hooks up to port "IR" in the back of the Slingbox. Please check the manual for more details.
joelchandran 2009-10-28, 08:26 PM Sorry i should have been more specific, i can't seem to find the IR sensor on the motorola box.
wysiwyg 2009-10-29, 05:53 AM Try pointing it towards the front, that's where it usually is. When you use the regular remote, where do you point it to?
