: DSR 530 DVI output
Are people successfully using this output? I have added a second hdtv display in my theater room....so I can watch HDTV without firing up my projector. So now I want to use the DVI output as well as the component. The problem is that the DVI output flickers randomly...it appears to just lose the signal. I tried 2 displays and 2 dvi cables. I was going to wait for another firmware upgrade to fix this but apparently this isn't going to happen for some time.
So I'm wondering if this flickering only affects certain units...mine was a very early unit. I have read about others having this problem and some not so I wanted to get a estimate on how widespread it is.
I cannot use DVI. When I first tune to the DVI output source, the TV screen is all snow for about 10 seconds. Finally the picture comes in, but every 30 to 60 seconds the video will lose itself for a couple of seconds. It's totally unacceptable. I can only use component video on mine. This has not worked since the DVR was released. There's no guarantee that this is going to be fixed in the next release. *C always tells us that they are going to fix all of the bugs, but so far that has not happened.
Best of luck!
Himself 2005-10-09, 10:05 AM It's a hardware thing to do with copy protection, basically the dvi output will never work unless you have a hdcp compliant tv. No firmware updates will fix it.
GaryE 2005-10-09, 10:51 AM Hi Himself,
The Manual for my Sony TV says...
"Can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP*) to other devices (such as digital TV receivers) that have compatible interfaces. The DVI-HDTV input terminal is compliant with the EIA-861 standard and is not intented for use with personal computers..."
I would be able to use a "DVI-D single link cable"? And what is the advantage of a DVI cable over component cables? I'm not quite up on this DVI stuff yet.

I am currently running the DVI output on my 50" RPTV. There is noticeable better picture with DVI. There is nothing wrong with component, but DVI is better again. This is seen in the fine detail of images. Color is smoother as well. Contrast is more enhanced.
Now that said, my DVI setup is not perfect. When changing the channels the screen will blank out and go to snow for a second or 3, then the channel tunes in. What happens is, the receiver sends out a "handshake" to the TV and gets lost temporarily. Then sees the TV and all is well. Uh... most of the time. On occasion, it will not see the TV and will not make the link. I usually have to go back to the previous channel, pick up the communication and then go to the channel I was looking for.
Ya, it's not perfect, but it is livable. It seems every TV is different and it's basically a crapshoot. *C says this is well documented and is high on their priority list. What that means, I'm not sure. I hope the next software update will fix the problem.
It's worth giving it a try. The DVI-D single link cable is the way to go.
BCScott 2005-10-09, 12:45 PM I'm using both DVI and component to my Sony KV40XBR. Both work very well. Until the A8 download, I was getting a flicker every 30 seconds or so on the SD channels and every 90 seconds or so on HD channels when using DVI. This was fixed for me with A8. It does take 1 second or so longer to change channels through DVI. PQ is about the same for me.
GaryE 2005-10-09, 12:48 PM Thanks Addicted,
Just ordered one from monoprice.com. Not really interested in paying those "monster" prices.
BTW, did anyone get a DVI cable with their 530? I got some adaptor in the box but no DVI cable. I see the 505 comes with a DVI cable.
AddictedtoToys 2005-10-09, 12:56 PM Thanks Addicted,

YIKES!! Monster Cable = Monster prices!
FYI. When connecting the DVI cable make sure to unplug your TV, and your 530. When connection is completed, power up the TV first, then the 530. You should be good to go.
GaryE 2005-10-09, 01:00 PM Ordered a DVD-D cable and a longer computer monitor cable and with shipping it came to $17.05US for both cables. About $20 canadian these days.
smp01 2005-10-09, 01:06 PM I have a projector and a normal TV. Usually the projector is off. When I want to connect the projector via HDMI/DVI I have to power down (unplug) the 530 then make the connections. The projector is not in a dedicated theatre room so I have to disconnect each time.
Once I get the DVI connection there is usually no problems for the remainder of the evening. I have found that it does look better than component. I use component for DVD. Sometimes I have to repeat the power down cycle a few times but never more than 3 times.
If your TV or display has the HDMI connection, then by default your set is HDCP compliant as the HDMI standard from the beginning was designed to be HDCP compliant. Not all DVI displays are HDCP compliant, eg many computer monitors are not HDCP.
I thought I read that they turned off HDCP in the firmware since so many people were having trouble. Anyway, both displays are supposed to be HDCP compliant.
I find it strange that some people have had their DVI issues solved with the A8 firmware. Anyone else have this issue resolved?
Himself 2005-10-09, 02:59 PM "I thought I read that they turned off HDCP in the firmware since so many people were having trouble."
That is also what they told me. I know it's an issue on my 505 regardless of what they say, no idea about the 530.
Having said that, apparently even having a HDCP compliant tv isn't a guarantee of everything working transparently. So perhaps a firmware upgrade can address issues within the HDCP environment.
It's a hardware thing to do with copy protection, basically the dvi output will never work unless you have a hdcp compliant tv. No firmware updates will fix it.It's strange that my recently released 2005 Toshiba television model would not be HDCP compliant. This is one of the top selling televisions on the market! I have not read anything about this nonsense in the BellExpressVu forums, or with Videotron or Rogers. This cannot be the culprit. I would be more inclined to believe that the HDCP code that *C is using is not compatible with most television sets.
Himself 2005-10-10, 07:31 AM My tv was made in February of this year, only 3 months old. It cost me $2200 and it's not hdcp compliant, despite claims to the contrary. If it is hdcp compliant, then my 505 isn't and my upconverting dvd player isn't. Either the whole hdcp thing is a buggy mess, or the simpler explanation is that it's alive and well and my tv is the odd man out. :)
The back of my TV says it was manufactured in July 2005. Only 3 months ago. It still doesn't work with StarChoice's DSR530 and the DVI to HDMI cable.
kuschall 2005-10-10, 08:18 PM My neither with my brand new Samsung LCD Display. The tv does not recognize any signal from my DSR505 with an DVI/HDMI CABLE. This is my tv : http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=LNR408DX%2fXAA
If any suggestion, feel free.
thanks

Unfortunately, the only thing I can suggest is wait for the new software upgrade. Sorry.
When these new high definition DVD recorders come out, does anyone know if we will be able to record high def content from the receiver on them? Likely not with the HDCP. How about with composite cables though? We might be able to record from those cables?!?
smp01 2005-10-11, 08:10 AM I suspect that yes, HD component you can record since it is analogue.
People are already recording their HD using the Yellow composite and S-VID cables to their PC's capture cards, external DVD burners and VCR's since the DSR5XX all convert the signals to all outputs.
You most likely meant the R/G/B COMPONENT, and as stated above, there is no mechanism to dis-allow such a recording unless legislation against their manufacture will only permit a Digital with HDCP connection.
