I have the same problem with my 9200 and my Panasonic TH42PD50 Plasma TV.
I have to do a hard reboot of the receiver to get a picture out of HDMI.

If I have my TV running and shut it off, leaving the receiver on, I have a black screen when I turn my TV back on. Seem like it's an HDMI synchronization type issue. I have reported it to Bell Tech support.

I have the same receiver and TV and the same problem. I have called BEV and they have given me three different ways to fix problem and all of them do not work. Your not alone Ksaban.

Hey guys,

I have the exact same set up that you both have and am having the same problem. I've talked to tech support 4 times today and they have no answers...they are telling me that it's the TV (which is BS). To get the picture back with HDMI, what I have to do is hook up component to get the picture back, unplug the HDMI from the receiver, shut down the TV and the receiver, unplug the receiver, unplug the components, plug the HDMI back in, plug the receiver back in, power on the receiver and the TV and then everything is fine. I have to do this every time I turn off my TV and then turn it back on again??? Come on. I just got hooked up with this today and I'm not impressed to say the least. ANY POST FOR A SOLUTION ON THIS WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. Thanks in advance...

Ok, here is the response I got from Panasonic when I posed the question:

Thank you for your e-mail. HDMI features a form of Copy Protection known as
HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection). This system uses a
protocol that checks for a connection every few seconds between the source
and display device. If a disconnect is noticed the source device will shut
down its output. In the case below, when the TV is turned off the satellite
looses its connection to the TV and, because of this, must shut down the
output. Once the box is turned off (then back on) it resets, checks for the
connection to the TV and begins to work again. The TV must be turned on
first, then any peripheral devices, when using DVI or HDMI connection
featuring HDCP.

Sincerely,
Customer Care Centre
Panasonic Canada Inc.

I'm at work right now, so I'm unable to test this out. If either of the guys that were experiencing this problem can give this a test and post the results, that'd be cool.

One other thing that I'm going to test if the above doesn't work...the "HDMI" cable that I got from Bell as part of my rental is really a DVI with two HDMI adaptors at either end. I may just buy a real HDMI cable to see if that may be the problem. Unless anyone else out there has already tried this and can let me know that this is/is not a solution...

While I agree with Panasonic for the most part, the problem I have is in having to turn the sat receiver off, turn the TV on and then the sat receiver. I have a Toshiba TV with HDMI and even unplugging the set for a couple minutes does not cause me to turn off the sat receiver to get the picture back.

Now if the sat receiver is sending the HDCP check every few seconds, the TV you would think when it is turned on would send a signal back saying hey everything is fine give me picture. Panasonic seems to be saying in essence that is not happening and in fact is saying that their set requires the TV to be turned on first, not right in my opinion as they are saying you ALWAYS have to turn off the sat receiver.

Somebody does not appear to be following the rules and Panasonic in their email seems to be sorta admitting that their set requires it to be turned on before any signal is sent.

You have a very good point there. Funny how I've only seen that this is a problem with Panny's and nothing out there with any other brand of TV. But I suppose I'll have to go with their suggestion on this one for now since I'm not about to take the TV back.

I'm new to the forums so I'm not able to start a new post yet (waiting period), but I want to put another question out there so I figured I'd just include it here:

I used to have Shaw Digital and channel surfing was almost instantaneous when using the channel up/down on the remote. Not the case with the 9220. I literally have a three to four second black screen before the next channel displays, and this happens for both TV1 and TV2. The up/down is almost unusable in my opionion. So I've resorted to using the Guide or Browse buttons for now unless someone has some advice for me :) .

BTW...a buddy of mine has the 5800 and says he does not have this problem. So I'm suspecting this is just an issue with the 9220.

Count me as someone who has to unplug the receiver then plug it back in to get a signal from my 9200 to my Panny TH-50PHD8UK using the HDMI to DVI cable provided in the box.

I have the same setup ... My TV received no signal on hdmi, I connected components, saw that 9200 was on 480i, changed to 1080i and hdmi started working ... hdmi works on all but 480i. Now I only run hdmi to my 50PHD8UK and it works great. I turned everything off, unplugged all devices, plugged them back in and turned them on and TV found singals with no problem. Now how I turn the tv on is another question ... my harmony 880 always turn the tv on and moves it to digital 1 input before turning the 9200 on. Also: the 9200 never turns off anyways ... so when TV comes on finds the signal .. or it remembers the last state. So no problem here.

The TV must be turned on first, then any peripheral devices, when using DVI or HDMI connection featuring HDCP.
My Toshiba TV manual says the TV must be turned on first but it doesn't seem to make any difference. It still works every time. It sounds like the Panny tech is BS'ing to cover up HDMI problems with their set. You guys should get together and demand that Panny fix the problem.

There are other threads about certain brands and models of TVs not working well with certain STBs. The problem is the manufacturers blame each other when they should be working together to fix it. As usual the consumer gets shafted.

Has anybody found a fix for the HDCP problems on this receiver. I too have to reboot my receiver to get a picture through HDMI to my projector. I have an Optoma H78 PJ. If I hook it directly to the PJ it will work after a reset until the PJ is turned off. If I go through My Pioneer vsx74 it works after a reset, but as soon as I switch inputs and come back the picture is gone.

I did some research on DBS talk and this was an issue with early 942's (in the 942 support forum). It seems that it was fixed in firmware updates. Has anybody heard whether this issue will be fixed? Is there someone I can contact to expedite the matter? (please don't say a CSR).
