: The Official I Hate The CRTC Thread
westmanguy 2006-12-13, 04:59 PM Very interesting article! It is right though, they are slowly dieing... Government over-ruling them, and they are way to strict.
The way this article says it, its like they control our freedom of speech, sort of.
I think there needs to be some set rules, but the CRTC needs to be shown the door.

This is an approved rant thread, and I didn't see a prob. with it.

I read the article too,we can only hope. The CRTC dictators have been on my most hated list for years.
StanleySparker 2007-01-08, 10:02 PM Growing up in the 80's as a kid, I quickly noticed that many shows would be interrupted, including the Smurfs on NBC by Global. Yes, even the Smurfs were not immune to the CRTC rules.
Then I really started disliking simsubbing as I got older in the 90's, especially interruptions of US primetime sitcoms. The worst were interruptions of the NBA on NBC by CrapTV (CTV) as well. I got so angry that I sent them several threatening emails to CrapTV.
These days, it's the interruption of the HD networks on Rogers that is starting to make my blood boil. There is no way this should be happening. We definitely should be allowed to watch the original US network without seeing Global or CrapTV on our screens.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one that finds simsubbing irritating and annoying behond comprehension. It's been great reading all these stories about everyone else and how much it bothers them when their US network is hijacked. It almost makes me want to move to the US to simply watch uninterrupted TV - I thought it was a crazy notion to even think of, but then I read the story about going to watch the SuperBowl in a US motel, and I realized I'm not the only one thinking on this wavelength.
Simsubbing had got to stop, no questions about it.
noaa2000 2007-01-14, 02:08 PM Hey Stan
I'm the one who is forced to go the US to watch the Super Bowl every year in a motel room for I don't have a choice anymore.I had become damn sick and tired of the CRTC ruining Super Bowl Sunday by forcing people here to watch the same old crappy ads from Canadian Tire or McCains Pizza while Americans, some of whom are my friends who live there, can watch those amazing $2,000,000
30 second ads that have beome part of the game. This little trip of mine cost me about $300.00
every year - rental car & motel room cost - but since 2005,
I can now watch the game in peace and quiet, far away from the CRTC dictators.Simsubbing is only just one of the many reasons that I really do want to live in the United States.
nfitz 2007-01-14, 02:50 PM Just be glad you don't have to deal with the FCC! Their antics after that Janet Jackson Super Bowl appearance were insane. FCC is far more restrictive than CRTC.
Besides ... it's only an ad. I'm not a American Football fan (why do they call the game football, when most of them never use their feet?) ... but if the game is that dull, that your watching it for the ads ... why not havine someone record the broadcast, cut out the game, and just watch the ads?
noaa2000 2007-01-14, 10:10 PM I am not the only one bitching about simsubbing, please read the pages of complaints on here from persons who are also absolutely fed up & pissed off at the CRTC dictators with their total control over television.
The major beef that we have all stated on this site - some more well written than I could ever compose - is this, that we pay our cable company a monthly bill to watch the US channels, including the commericals, only to have them "taken over" by Global; or CTV,in other words,we are being denied the
US channels we have legally paid for.If I want to watch the Super Bowl or any other American program on ABC,NBC,CBS, and FOX,I should be allowed to watch them on an American channel, but am being denied my rights as a paying customer by the CRTC. THAT IS THE MAJOR PROBLEM.
When it comes to television in Canada, there is no freedom of choice. You are even denied, under the penalty of arrest & imprisonment, from subscribing to any US based Satellite companys. Why do some persons though risk breaking that law & subscribe anyway, that is a simple answer:
BEACUSE CANADIAN TELEVISION STINKS!!!!!!!!!!
I've been in the US many times & seen satellite tv there, there is a hell of a lot more better quality channels on there.Satellite TV here doesn't even come close to matching the programming on Direct TV or Dish Network.
Getting back to the problem of simsubbing. This outrage has to end once &
for all!! Until this happens,I will be going to the US for Super Bowl Sunday for many years into the future.
nfitz 2007-01-15, 09:10 AM Sure, simsubbing sucks. But that doesn't make CRTC a dictator! Would you prefer we had the FCC? Their solution, instead of simsubbing, is to simply black-out the signal. And they let cable companies do it if the show is running on a distant channel in any timeslot! So you can't even change the channel.
Would this American-style solution be preferable?
noaa2000 2007-01-15, 07:17 PM Both the FCC & the CRTC are guilty,I do agree with you.

Here in New Brunswick at least.. I was able to watch the American feed of the SuperBowl last year without any trouble. (On Rogers)
Were you in New Brunswick last year? I guess not if you spent 300$ to go watch it somewhere else.
J
HT gearhead 2007-01-15, 11:27 PM I don't have simsubbing problems. I have Bell and I also pay for US satellite tv and I don't care who knows it either. Well, except the US satellite tv company that is. :D

Was in the US last year & was planning to go again, but may have to cancel this year though,I dread having to watch a simsub Super Bowl again.
Rogers Cable always simsubs US TV programs or sporting events where I live.
Wayne 2007-01-16, 02:06 PM The Conservatives will be making several appointments to the CRTC in the near future - call your MP and tell him how you think.
noaa2000 2007-01-17, 11:53 AM Found out that Global TV has paid for the right to broadcast all of the
NFL playoff games and the Super Bowl for the next several years.Wish the NFL bosses wouldn't sell the rights to any Canadian stations for that would eliminate that simsubbing crap on game day.
lajohn27 2007-01-17, 12:58 PM NOAA:
I live in Fredericton.. and here.. last year.. there was no simsubbing on the non-HD channels of the SuperBowl. And for some strange reason, the game was simsubbed on the WEST COAST feed of the ABC-HD signals. HOWEVER, the American signal was 'in the clear' on the East Coast ABC-HD and SD network feeds.
If you're with Rogers in New Brunswick - anywhere in New Brunswick - you would have seen the same thing last year.
Now this year will be a bit trickier because it's on CBS this year and Fredericton gets CBS from BOSTON for SD and Detroit for HD.
lajohn27 2007-01-17, 01:02 PM Here is the post I made about the Superbowl NOT being simsubbed in NB ... on the day of the game last year.

Here in Saint John, the Rogers cable office always simsubs.
lajohn27 2007-01-17, 01:32 PM Do you get the HD channels?
J
noaa2000 2007-01-17, 02:33 PM I do not have an HD TV or Rogers digital cable, both items are just way too expensive for me to have, just have the regular cable TV and unfortunately that is always simsubbed.
ohmagic 2007-01-17, 09:27 PM I feel your simsub pains...
Therefore, I just download 720p-tv rips from various places for all my shows then just watch them on my HDTV...
Sure, they pop up on the net a day later, but no commercials and no Canadian garbage, its worth it.
God bless Shaw and their 10mbit internet, without them I'd be force to subscribe to their awful SD cable...
For now, I'll just enjoy downloading 720p rips at 1200kb/s :)
