I noticed the simsubbing too during the tennis.I as well as you want to know what in hell is going on here.I'm concerned now about the NFL season,
CBS sometimes shows 2 games, one at 2pm and one at 515pm and most of the time the late game doesnt finish until after 8pm my time which is when
60 minutes is on,but now I'm concerned that at 8pm whether or not the football game has ended that the simsubbed SUN TV broadcast of 60 minutes will cause me to miss out on the end of the football game on CBS.If this happens I am going to raise holy hell with Rogers Cable.

Can you email the CRTC and your BDU, and cc: your MP NOW, advising them of the problems last year? And ask that the situation not be allowed to repeat?

I have seen that video of yours before and it shows everyone about the anger and frustration Canadians go through due to simsubbing and you are probably right that I will lose the ending of the football game to
SUN TV and their broadcast of 60 Munutes.Simsubbing is why I again have already booked my motel room in Bangor,Maine so I can go there next Feburary to watch the Super Bowl on CBS in piece and quiet and safely
far enough away from the clutches of the CRTC mafia.

The CRTC isn't going to just stop with the Local Programming Imporvement Fee (LPIF) of 1.5% of our cable bills. They are reviewing (see 2009-411-3 (http://support.crtc.gc.ca/rapidscin/default.aspx?lang=En)) to add something called fee-for-carriage to the cable providers, who will no doubt pass this extra costs to use the cable subscribers. Some say the costs could be $5 to $10 extra a month!

Of course the CRTC says the fee will go back to major networks. If I had a good reception from an antenna I could pick up the signal for FREE but if I pay someone to give the signal to me in a better form I have to not only pay the company who gives me the clear signal but no I have to pay for something that is FREE.

Next the CRTC will allow the major network go door to door collecting TV taxes for anyone who owns a TV, like in Japan. My sister-in-law is Japanese and Japan's verision of CBC went around door to door collecting money from anyone who owned a TV because Japanese people have to pay about $50 a month to received TV shows through an antenna if they didn't cable or satellite. His Japanese wife had the money coming out of her bank account monthly, even though she had no cable or satellite!

Unfortunately, that will not help. I have sent quite a few email complaints about this simsubbing crap, both to CRTC and Robbers, over the last two years. Other than typical "sorry about your inconvenience" replies, nobody is going to do anything about it. Too much money involved.

What did help though, is switching from Robbers to OTA. No more damn simsubbing!

While I agree with DonR's post, I always hate to discourage direct engagement when you see something that irks you.

Rather than saying "that will not help" (which is probably true), I'd say "set your expectations of the response very low". I still think direct engagement is better than doing nothing. And at least you feel good that you at least tried to do something about it. ;)

Unfortunately things don't change often unless there is widespread action (not writing emails). Look at how things like allowing Sunday shopping in Ontario happened, or how the 55 mph speed limit was repealed in the US. The only way to get monoliths to move is to gain critical mass against it.

The new season of the NFL begins tonight and right on cue NBC has been hijacked by TSN for the duration of the game.I am too angry and frustated to watch the game now thanks to that damn sinsubbing. The CRTC mafia has ruined my evening again.

I couldn't agree more! That is why I sent a number of complaints to both CRTC and Rogers, with regards to botched simsubs.

I did not have any intention of discouraging anybody from taking action. It is just that, based on my experience, CRTC and service providers do not care at all about what we think. Too much money is in the game, and probably too few complaints.

The CRTC states that if the provider doesn't followup with a complaint, they don't have the abilities (resources) to go after each individual screwup which the CUSTOMER ultimately has to live with (and the provider still gets their money).

Rogers many times have followed up with my complaints, but half the time they state that they did nothing wrong, when they clearly did. The Letterman situation is the utmost joke, as Rogers owns OMNI. After Rogers response, regardless of what it is, the CRTC says they are satisfied. So Rogers could say "we are the greatest provider ever and our HD picture looks better than OTA video", and the CRTC would be fine with that and let that go.

Now of course the CRTC would have the resources to help out any of their bed buddies directly at Rogers, Telus, Bell, CTV, Global if they needed assistance.

I was surprised to see that it was not simsubbed on Shaw. At least not the HD channel.

No, Shaw (Direct or cable) doesn't simsub TSN at all. Since TSN is a non-terrestrial speciality channel, the law does not require that it be simsubbed over any US broadcast.

Bell TV only simsubs TSN because they have a vested interest in the network (CTVglobemedia owns an 80% share; in turn Bell owns 15% of CTVglobemedia).

I was talking to my friend a while back and I never found out what happened I'm hoping someone will know.
A group of satelite companies got together and challenged the big corporations under one of the charter rights. It seems the big companies kept stalling the proceeding and the satelite companies ran out of funds for their legal fees and layers etc...
Does anyone know if this happened?
Could a single person do the same challenge providing they had unlimited legal council?

Satellite companies = Bell and Shaw Direct? Or the ones that want to sell equipment to steal satellite?

So nice to be in Bangor again to watch the Super Bowl, free and clear this evening far enough away from the clutches of the CRTC mafia and their simsub monster.Have been coming to this same motel to watch the game for several years now that the staff has gotten to know me and so refer to me as a Super Bowl fan refugee:).As I was checking in yesterday at the front desk one of the staff who was new on the job ask me why do they block the US broadcast of the game in Canada, its just so stupid he said. After explaining to him the rules on simsubbing,I added this too."I am only just one person, but there are thousands more such as me north of the border who share in the annual frustation and sheer anger and total outrage of being uable to watch the US broadcast of the Super Bowl due to stupid government regulations.Yet I am probably the only one who will take the extreme step of actually coming to the US to watch the game simply because I will no longer tolerate being a slave to the CRTC.Im suposed to be living in a free country I said and yet I live in fear of my own government if I dare try to watch any American channels that havent been appoved of.I may as well I said,be living in a China or North Korea where you can watch only what the government wants you to watch for its the same way where I come from."

Anyway people,if any of you are able the watch the CBS TV feed there please enjoy the game tonight.
