Don't forget to report it to CRTC. I'm doing it on a regular basis, anytime something like this happens. Even though it seems useless now, because they obviously don't care, we should keep complaining, and maybe some day somebody will listen.

CRTC is just spending our tax dollars and does nothing for the people. I had complaints to them previously and CRTC just simply respond saying it is not their issue.
While I agree for the most part the CRTC is a waste of time/money, if you have a valid/legitimate complaint, I find they are useful in some cases. I had a complaint again Bell (phone) and had a VP at Bell call me within hours of filing the complaint with teh CRTC. The issue was dealt with professional, quickly and to my satisfaction.

I just registered here specifically so I can post in this thread.

Finally I've found brethren in this fight!

I hate the CRTC with every fibre of my being, not a week goes by, NOT A WEEK, that something that shows up on my DVR's guide isn't on because the CRTC won't allow it because some Canadian station has exclusive Canadian rights to it.

And God help you if you want to watch American commericals on Super Bowl Sunday. It used to be the Canadian stations only hijacked (and that is the correct term for it, not Simultaneous Substitution, it's HIJACKING) the regular feeds but if you watched the West Coast or HD feeds you still got to see the American commericals but this year they caught on and only the West Coast HD feed wasn't hijacked with 57 repeats of my local car dealer's commericals. Yeah I'd rather watch a Portland St Honda commercial that has a budget of 12 bucks over a GoDaddy commercial any day.

And don't even get me started on Hockey. Ever try to watch hockey on a Sportsnet station that wasn't in your area? My brother is a Flames fan and we get plenty of Flames games here, except oops we don't because we live on the east coast so all we get is a nice dump taken on our faces by the CRTC.

The latest straw is them hijacking my Speed coverage of Formula 1 because TSN has exclusive rights. So I get up this morning and fire up the DVR to watch F1 in HD with awesome announcers and all I get is this:

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5444/tvcolorbars.jpg

and BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

I used to wonder why people risked breaking the law by getting gray market satellite dishes. now I know why, because the CRTC BLOWS.

I tried complaining, they don't listen. Here's a typical conversation with the CRTC.

Me: Oh Hi, I'd just like to file a complaint because I pay my hard earned money for these channels and you guys tell me what I can and can't watch.

CRTC: Oh sure we can help you with that, could you turn around and bend over please?

Me: Huh? Why?

CRTC: Just trust us, I mean we're the CRTC we wouldn't steer ya wrong would we?

Me: Well, Ok, but I still don't know wh...AHHHHHHHHHH!

*they then brutally sodomize me all the while telling me I like it over my screams. and then when they've had their fill they tell me I'm a pretty boy and not to talk about this to anyone.*

Although I see a douche bag like Andrew Coyne is on my side I feel kinda dirty.

But still the CRTC blow.

I hate the CRTC with every fibre of my being, not a week goes by, NOT A WEEK, that something that shows up on my DVR's guide isn't on because the CRTC won't allow it because some Canadian station has exclusive Canadian rights to it.I totally hate the CRTC and if I were to be made Prime Minister my first act would be to dissolve the CRTC.

But...

Most of your anger is misdirected. The bulk of the issues that you have are due to the way that content holders sell their rights. It is not the CRTC's fault but the owner of the content, such as:

F1 on TSN. TSN owns the Canadian rights to the F1, not Speed. Therefore Speed cannot broadcast these events in Canada - this has nothing to do with the CRTC it is due to commercial contracts.

Hockey on Sportsnet - Sportsnet just has regional rights to hockey that they buy from individual teams - TSN owns the National cable rights to NHL. If Sportsnet was allowed to broadcast the games on their regional channels throughout the country they would be somewhat pre-empting TSN's national contract and the would also be "violating" the territory of other teams throughout the country (the Ottawa Senators may not like 82 Flames games plus 82 Oilers games plus 82 Canucks games... available to everyone in Ottawa). If you have an issue with this then take it to the NHL as it also has nothing to do with the CRTC.

It is kind of like if you buy the Tim Hortons franchise on a street - you don't want someone else to be able to open another Tims right next door so you get a certain amount of geographic exclusivity. This has nothing to do with the government, it is just protecting your commercial interests. The F1 and hockey rights are exactly the same.

It is also due to geographic TV rights that we cannot download any decent TV shows from iTunes and we can't access content from NBC.com, hulu.com, etc. And it is why you likely won't be able to watch any of the video from Masters.org during the next week. It totally sucks but it has nothing to do with the CRTC.

Simsubbing is more of a CRTC issue but it exists because it is trying to protect the interests of Canadian TV channels/networks.

Gee, and I thought I hated the CRTC.

Even though some of the anger might be misdirected, if it weren't for these useless networks like CTV and Global, we wouldn't have to put up with simsubs in the first place. Whenever a show isn't picked up by these two ingrates (or any other Canadian network), we get to watch it the way it should be. And that's the way it should be all the time.

The CRTC fails to see all the headaches we put up with thanks to simsubs and does nothing about them (so I like that convo that HisHighness typed out, because I can relate), and they keep giving canned answers, along with the BDUs now.

But speaking of botched simsubs, time to go setup for the recording of the botched hockey / golf simsub on NBC.

Ok, but my view (and I assume most of you as well) is: I pay for the channel I should get to see what's on the channel. Let the greedy scum suckers divide my money however they like but don't deny me what I pay for.

And as for this rights BS it should be abolished along with the CRTC. I pay for a channel I should get whats on that channel. If the TV stations don't like it then they should produce better content so I'll watch their channels instead of the other guy. It's called competition but much like Gas Stations we can't have any of that in Canada.

And I loathe Simultaneous Substitution (I.E. HIJACKING) and that is alllllllllll CRTC baby.

The hijackings are brutal, because most of the time they aren't done right. Trust me, I've suffered a lot (especially with sports) thanks to the simsub rule.

And Global and CTV are afraid of competition, so they cowher behind this rule and whine and complain when they can't get things their way.

On a slightly different note, I was wondering if there was anywhere else we could complain to besides the CRTC about simsubs not being done right, and missing out on key parts of programming. The CRTC is not willing to address faulty simsubs and correct the problem fully. The BDUs are even worse, with the majority of customer service reps not even knowing what simsubs are.

Perhaps we can complain to Health Canada, as these simsubs have a determental effect on my health, causing my blood pressure to rise every time. What about the BBB? If I pay for something, I should get to receive the service or product in full. Imagine missing the gas cap flap / cover on your car if you buy a new car from a dealer, and they tell you "oh, it's almost a complete car". No one would stand for that, so why should we stand for parts of programming being lost, even though the CRTC states in their canned repsonses that we are to expect this. Writing to MP's hasn't helped either. I don't know who else to turn to, but botched simsubs will continue to happen and parts of programming will continue to be lost, and I'm tired of nothing being done about it.

The only way to end this is to make the CRTC a political issue. Contact MPs, journalists, etc. to turn up the heat. Have one party say "If elected we will get rid of the CRTC." That is the only way that things will change.

What about a Ban the CRTC political party?

While the Marijuana Party hasn't gotten anyone elected or anything it has drawn attention to their goal. It's not that hard to start a political party in Canada.

Why don't we start a petition here and see where it goes... too bad the chance of any media attention would be nill.

After reading hugh's thread on "Got a complaint, don't call the CRTC!" (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=92010), I thought I'd just try to make a inquiry on their web site, which certainly gives you the impression you can raise issues in this manner. You even get a reference number when you send it.

Of course, no one ever responds (I wonder if a human being ever saw it ) even if it is a question or comment although it assures you that you will get a reply within 2 weeks (I think it said?). Almost a month now and nothing - pretty much what I expected.

While on the CRTC web site, I took a quick look at the executive bios. I didn't read all them but the ones I did sure had that "conflict of interest" feeling, but that's not all that surprising either for an organization of this type.

Have one party say "If elected we will get rid of the CRTC." That is the only way that things will change.

I'm actually surprised someone hasn't tried it. This is a lightening rod issue that stirs up people's emotions. Maybe not "get rid of", maybe just fire the current execs and start over.
