CrazyInSane,

That video made me laugh out loud non-stop. That was awesome. I have not laughed that long in a while, thanks I needed that.

It was great how in your clip:

- you made CTV cut in overtop of NBCs today show with their slogan, and then NBCs Today Show was restarted
- the original NBC logo was covered up by CTVs logo, but initially was in the wrong spot (I notice this a lot with A-Channel when they interrupt)
- the other larger NBC logo was covered up
- the CTV voiceover made it extremely noticeable that this was not how the original broadcast is - exactly the way CTV is when they try to fool viewers
- the random commerical that was inserted at an unscheduled US timeslot - causing us to miss a key part of the show
- the banner ad telling everyone that *Next on CTV: More hijacked US programming!*

Thanks again for the laughs.

That's an incredibly sad statement. I may have incredible disdain for the CRTC but I'll never be embarassed - and am quite proud - to say I live in Canada.
Okay- maybe I went a little overboard with the "Canada is embarassing" statement. But the whole simsub/CRTC thing is just very annoying.

And I'm glad you enjoyed my video Classof83! It was my first ever YouTube video and I was just aching to make a simsub parody video! I simply needed to share with the public how much of a monstrosity simsubbing is!

And yeah, I've also seen the displacement of the "A" logo when they've simsubbed, I think that's where I got the idea. I think I've seen it on Leno a couple of times. Jeez do I ever hate that CTV "logo music" though, you can hear it in the video right after the lady says "(random town) is watching CTV". I have to listen to it each time I watch a simsubbed show!!:(

Yup, the A-Channel logo is definitely off slightly from the Mighty NBC Peacock during Leno. And I definitely know what you mean by the CTV music - it drives me up the wall as well.

Whenever I am over at someone elses house, and I hear that music in front of others before a US show, I get angered. At first others did not know why, and I tried to explain the idea of simsubbing to everyone, but some did not fully understand, while others just stated to relax, it is only television afterall. But of course simsubbing does not bother them like it bothers you and me and some others out there including those on this forum!

If you think simsubbing is bad, wait until the CRTC starts regulating the internet when they order almost all non-canadian webpages,US webpages in particular, blocked from being seen in this country. As sure as the sun rises and sets everyday the CRTC is
hell bent on restricting access to the interent

If they could regulated how the sun rises and sets they would do that too.

Yes, I can see it now...

You try going to Wikipedia.org, it redirects you to "Wikipediacanada.ca", where all the articles are made new from scratch and you can't access the original articles. The article on, let's say, "The Simpsons", says "The Simpsons is a television program aired on Global TV", and when you try to change it to "FOX", they block you.

You go to IMDB.com, it redirects you to CIMDB.ca (Canadian Internet Movie Database), where only Canadian movies and TV shows are able to be discussed and listed. You try suggesting they add US movies/shows because Canadian content sucks, and they block you.

You try to visit FCC.gov, and it redirects you to CRTC.gc.ca, where you will see a link for "FRENCH" in huge letters, but will find the "ENGLISH" button hidden down in the right corner somewhere. When finally in the site, you see a graphic in the top left corner, "CRTC: Forcing Canadians to experience crappy subpar Canadianized versions of US stuff for years!"

I am already being redirected now to Canadian sites on my home PC.When I type in
AOL.com the American page,I am redirected to AOL.ca. If I type in Google.com
I am redirected to the Canadian one,Google.ca So internet simsubbing has already begun to happen,at least on my PC at home.I use Rogers as my ISP.
I dont know if they are doing this but somebody is.

If the CRTC get their way and they usually always do say good bye to CNN.com CBS news.com NBC news.com ABC news.com FOX news.com.the Voice of America
VOA news.com and yes even BBC news.com in the next few years and get use to only the CBC,CTV and Global as the only souces of news online for Canadians.

The great Canadian firewall is only going to get more stronger and sadly we are powerless to stop the CRTC from destroying free access to the internet.

That redirection is done by the website, in concert with cookies in your browser.
If you delete ALL your cookies, I bet you google.com will resolve to google.com

It's not cookies, it's your IP address. They just assume you want the Canadian version of the website. For now, however, you can still elect to go back onto the US version of every website I've seen so far. When you select the US version, the browser will remember your preference in the future until your cookies expire or are deleted (depending on the website).

So internet simsubbing has already begun to happen,at least on my PC at home.I use Rogers as my ISP.

No, this is done by the individual website. For example, if you go to Amazon.com it won't redirect you, but it will ask "do you want to go to your local version Amazon.ca?". Walmart.com and Circuitcity.com are examples of websites that do not redirect to their Canadianized versions.

With Google, if you want to bypass the Canadian redirect just set your homepage to "http://www.google.com/ncr". I'm not positive on what "NCR" stands for, but likely something along the lines of "No Calculating Region". This will ensure direction to Google.com.

The IP filter can bee seen elsewhere as well, but at a stricter level, for example where CBS.com, FOX.com, and other US TV network sites do not allow non-US IP addresses to stream their full episodes for broadcast rights reasons. (By the way, they'd let us watch if they could—they're forbidden from doing so by law unless they obtain the appropriate rights).

Sorry, I removed it because it kept getting bad ratings and hateful comments so I figured people weren't liking it.

But I'm going to make a new one, the same concept, few more funny parts, and post it again. I'll post the new link soon.

Comments on youtube were hateful? I only saw 2 comments there, and they were not hateful. Or were you getting personal messages saying the video was not good. Maybe employees from CTV were commenting!!! Of course they would not like it.

With this report due out soon, I simply can't imagine that anyone at the CRTC is going to do or encourage anything new or creative or original.

I can't really see how the limits on competitive American programming preserves Canadian culture. You can get or see just about anything over the Internet now so their efforts are futile.

Canadian culture has evolved parallel to the Americans and is similar but still much different. If it were me making the decisions, I would make it easier to get Canadian programming and focus on making it better to encourage more.

Just looking at the CBC shows "Intelligence", "The Border" and "Heartland" there has been a lot of improvement and I think those shows are as good or better than original programming from the States. The programming from the States has dumbed down across the board with just a few exceptions. And the good stuff from American cable is available here.

I'd much rather watch "The Shield" or "Sons of Anarchy" on Showcase or Movie Central in HD than watch letterboxed 4:3 on an American station. I personally don't know what exactly is being limited.

I'd certainly like to see unencrypted QAM HD on Canadian cable to get rid of the STB or cablecards so you can use a Tivo in Canada. And I'd really like to see OTA HD broadcasting in Canada sooner rather than later.

Maybe you can improve access to Canadian content by unencrypting it? You need a STB for American stuff and you don't for Canadian stuff. Something like that might get Canadian content in front of more eyeballs.

But the impediment is the lack of creativity and the inability of the CRTC to think out of the box. I'm sure the report will be more of the same old crap we've heard over and over and over.

There's just no real leadership at any level anywhere. Where have the best and brightest gone when we need them?

Hello all,

I had previously made a post on this thread regarding a parody video I made concerning NBC's Today Show and CTV's less-than-stellar simsub attempt.

I just wanted to let all who are interested know that I am currently working on a new simsub parody video (note: parody meaning not real, and exaggerated) concerning A-Channel's simsubbing of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on NBC.

I was watching Jay Leno tonight and it prompted me to want to make this vid—it was the horribly pathetic attempt A-Channel made at covering up the NBC peacock logo... at first A-Channel's logo was in the wrong place, then they sort of moved it inch by inch sideways then downward, to completely cover the NBC logo. It was HILARIOUS. Those who saw Leno on November 13 may have noticed this.

The video will be called "Worst Simsub Ever"... and not only will I be including the "logo cover-up" gag, but I'll be doing an example of where both A-Channel and the cable station screw up... it's when they think Jay Leno has been delayed by NBC, when in fact it hasn't been... so A-Channel instead airs alternate programming (usually CTV Newsnet or otherwise), all-the-while the cable company simsubs A-Channel over NBC's signal, leaving us with CTV News on NBC!! This one should be funny. Anyway stay tuned. Should only be a couple of days.

Cheers,

CIS

I can't wait to see this. You should still post your other one up too. That one was short, sweet and to the point.
One for Global needs to be done as well... maybe I'll try one for them.
Or incorporate all 3 useless networks (Global, CTV, A) and send it to the CRTC - afterall, if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million.

CrazyInSane
2008-11-16, 03:01 AM
Yeah, that would be great if you could do one for Global, I'd love to see someone else give one of these a try. They're fun as hell to make, and it's a great way to channel all your anger about simsubs.. into one convenient over-the-top parody video lol.

I suggest using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (or CS4 if you can get it) for the editing, as Windows Movie Maker probably won't get you far. It's available for download on the internet (legally, a full-functional 30-day trial version) at http://www.adobe.com/. To make the video you'll probably need a way of uploading TV video to your computer as well (I use camcorder/firewire), but alternatively you can just take from videos that are already on the net. If you need any tips about using Adobe Premiere, let me know.

As for my video, it's almost done, and I think it's pretty funny. I've added the "snowy noise" effect for both the audio and video to the "A channel" portions, to imitate the degradation of quality we see with HDTV simsubs. I've also included a DirecTV commercial in it (one of those cool ones that re-enact movies), just to make it all the more of a piss-off, considering we can't legally purchase DirecTV in Canada.

In response to your suggestion, I may very well send some of this material to the CRTC—at the very least they might get a good laugh and show it to their higher-ups. I'm pondering as to whether I would disclose to them if it was FAKE or not though, lol, but I'd probably be eligible to be sued by CTVglobemedia if I didn't clarify that.

Thank God for my timeshifted digital cable package.
