The same way simsubbing results in a plethora of original Canadian content?

Hi All,

I have to admit that I have only read the first and last page of this thread so I am sure someone has said this. But it's my right (in this thread anyway) to bitch about the CRTC.

My grip is why they have not made all licensed TV station in Canada switch to HD broadcast. At time of writing from what I read there are only a handful of Canadian cities that broadcast OTA DTV and that was done voluntarily in large markets by the stations themselves. Like how could they have dropped the ball so badly on this? They seem to be in some other world that has HD on every channel, I think it’s called Ottawa .

For years I have been listening to this and I'm always irritated about the Canadian content thing. Are we that confused about our Canadaian identity that the govenment has to constantly stick it's fingers into what we want for entertainment? I watch alot of American television and not once have I ever thought myself as an American or wished we were more American. I always get the impression that the Canadian media has to over compensate the Canadian identity thing by always stating " Canadian actor, Canadian born actor, Canadian golfer, Canadian singer, Canadian baseball player, Canadian space shuttle arm , etc. It always feels like they are trying to tell us, " see, Canadians are just as good as the Americans", like we're the runt on the team that needs encouragement to feel good about ourselves. Is this the reason to have the CRTC, so we can feel good about ourselves as Canadians. I'm proud to be from Canada! I don't need the government to regulate my pride.I don't live in China!!!

as much as I despise the US justice (the one they brag about all the time, they must be rich) it is cool that every week I read about a new class action lawsuit (not really for money but to prove a point) on a big company ie. MS, Apple for sometimes something very little but enough people are pissed off enough it proves a point and makes the company listen and sometimes even change. I would love to see that sort of thing happen to all the cable/sat providers forcing them to take on the CRTC to stop simsubbing (hijacking as I call it) and other foolish nonsense that we pay taxes for

well said my feelings exactly, If we could do away with CRTC I sure as hell wouldn't miss Instant Star LOL or American shows I could watch on American channels anyways. Imagine if they had Canadian Gladiators 3,2,1, hug it out bitches LOL

Canadian broadcasting and regulations suffer from an acute case of "little man syndrome". Other countries can't play, unless it's our rules. The deck has to be stacked.

That isn't the country I know. Sounds like a bunch of protectionist big government Marxists.

Hail to the state.

Aren't you all glad we are funding state run media, CBC Pravda, to the tune of one billion dollars per year with 2% audience base (during hockey season)? The CRTC sees no problem with that. Our money well spent.

Just keep up the anti-American rhetoric. God forbid we adopt far out ideas like an elected senate and freedom of speech.

I am making my first submission to this forum, and I haven't read any other entries to see if what I am about to say is 'more of the same'. Any experiences that I have had with the CRTC have left me with the impression that they are utterly 'toothless'. They are wimps that don't want to venture into the 'deep end of the pool'.

Simultaneous substitution.

As if anyone wants to watch a commercial for Canadian Tire during the SuperBowl.

I agree Signal substitution has been one of those things that really ticks me off. I now go out of my way to watch American shows on American channels via OTA or FTA. Why do we need a government body that censors the content that Canadians can watch!?

one more reason to hate the CRTC :HBO Canada and don't come here with the ''Beter than nothing'' reason as i won't stand by it

With the stakes so much higher in this year's US election + the financial mess there I've been watching a bit more CNN than usual. I just noticed that there are "Canadian" commercials sprinkled in among the US ones.

Seems odd to me, but there must be some sort of "CRTC Logic" to this - can somebody please elaborate for me?

Canadian cable and satellite providers are given a certain number of minutes per hour to substitute commercials over top of the US commercials, on certain US channels.

Ahh. That makes a bit of sense, but it still puzzles me that its a half-assed measure --> why wouldn't they be permitted 100% substitution then on these types of channels?

one more reason to hate the CRTC :HBO Canada and don't come here with the ''Beter than nothing'' reason as i won't stand by itI don't know if the limitations of HBO Canada are due to the CRTC or are they due to the fact that HBO (1) sells Canadian rights to some of its shows to Canadian networks and (2) HBO may not have Canadian broadcast rights for much of their other content in the US. I agree that this sucks but I don't think you can blame the CRTC.

It is the same issue that prevents us from watching a lot of US TV shows online from iTunes, Hulu, etc. (and that delayed the iTunes Music store from coming to Canada) - it is not the CRTC that is stopping us, it is the archaic way that rights are sold on a geographic basis.

Damn, I hate simsubbing with a passion!
My dream is to one day never see CTV, Global / CH, Omni, or some of the CHUM stations on any US network ever again!
The CRTC has to force these Canadian stations to come up with 100 percent origianl programming!!! I know it'll never happen, but one can hope.

What was wrong with "The Trouble With Tracy" or "Starlost"

What's wrong with Murdoch Mysteries? It's as good as much of the programming on the Big 4.

If the CRTC wants to do some good they wouldn't allow Rogers (a cable company) to own CityTV. No wonder CityTV has such a low output transmitter on the CN tower.

As for Murdoch Mysteries, I'll take a look but something tells me it'll suck. Canadian shows tend to look technically terrific but seem to lack any life. Eg: good lighting and sharp focus are nice to watch but weak (safe, PC, dull) stories don't last long.

On a sidenote (not CRTC) if you ever watched the French movie Vidocq it was "technically" well shot on digital but the look was extremely distracting for me. Canadian produced television shows IMO have a look that's nothing like the US shows shot here like Battlestar Galactica.

It's embarassing to live in this country unless you're part of French Canada, in Quebec. They're the only ones that could even be considered "unique" or to have their "own culture".

Seriously, why the hell do Global, CTV, A, and E! even exist? The only purpose they serve is to prevent us from watching the channels we paid for on our cable bill (NBC, CBS, FOX) during mostly all primetime hours. I get a little break from it because I'm in AST (Atlantic Time), so the newshour starts here at 11:00, when it's only 10 PM eastern, so they can't simsub for the 11 timeslot (I get to watch CSI: Miami on CBS).

The CRTC is so old school. Enough, already. I don't watch Global, don't care to, and never will.

I sincerely think that if they try to regulate the internet, they will have a fight on their hands. I, for one, will emigrate and renounce my citizenship ASAP.I'll meet you outside the border.

Hey all,

So i dislike simsubbing, and was bored, and decided to make a YouTube video about how badly it can be and how it goes wrong and how CTV and Global are cheap companies, etcetera.

Check it out here:

That's an incredibly sad statement. I may have incredible disdain for the CRTC but I'll never be embarassed - and am quite proud - to say I live in Canada.
