My unit is asking today if I want to upgrade - does anyone know what this upgrade does/for?

New version is 556

I wonder if has to do with the 24/7 MC Hd channel?

Mine did the upgrade when I went to hook it up at a buddy's house to watch a hockey game in true HD. One thing I noticed when playing with the menu; it looks like it will now scan for analog OTA channels.

I didn't get a chance to investigate any further; mainly because I don't have many OTA analog channels to watch that aren't already there on Bell.

some have experienced black crush or a darker picture - mine is fine - also watch for pricing on DVI cables you should be abel to get one under $40

another noob question ;)

the 6120 does not support 1080p / will that make it obsolete in the near future?

thanks

Definitely experiencing very noticeable black crush on my set after upgrade. Had to fiddle with settings for a while to compensate.

Nothing supports 1080p, so pretty much everything will be extinct. :)

Even the 1080p sets that are coming out, typically only have 1080i inputs.

HDTV standard is 720P and 1080i. 1080p is being introduced as a marketing/selling feature. No content (not exactly sure) is being recorded in 1080p. Heck, I'd be happy if the so called HD channels had more than 50% HD content today.

More pixels is always better but I think we will be waiting awhile for true 1080p content.

How can I upgrade to the latest firmware? My system hung 4 times yesterday when switching from OTA to Satelite channels...

I paid $9.95 for my 6ft. DVI cable, and it seems to work fine.

I usually just leave my receiver totally off overnight or when not in use (still plugged in to power and phone line) and it updates automatically at 3am (as set up in the menu - forget exactly where). I checked on the weekend and I have the latest firmware as per the list - E556. I have never tried to force a firmware update.

Are you sure the new version is E559? The software update sticky from Falcon on the main page shows E556 as the latest 6100 firmware version.

My 6100 is now running 559 as well. As was stated, I don't really notice any difference other than the system info page(s).

So I checked my receiver last night before the Grammys and E559 was loaded! I checked the system info and that is totally new. Does the check switch automatically as soon as you bring up the first screen. Also identified my equipment properly even though I use Dish Pro hardware which was never supported by BEV. The last screen (third screen) shows on the bottom that the firmware is from Echostar. All in all I like the new setup - lots of useful information in one place rather than searching for all your settings through the different menu screens.

The Grammys looked great as well. Would be nice if BEV would provide a list of firmware fixes somewhere.
