Bugatti: 1,001 horsepower, $1.24 million

Reports: VW starts production of its new supercar, the Bugatti Veyron.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Volkswagen's latest product probably won't be very good on gas and it has a rather high price tag. But that hasn't stopped a handful of people from putting down payments on the car before production started earlier this month.

Each Bugatti Veyron 16.4 will cost an estimated $1.24 million, according to media reports. For that, buyers will get an all-wheel-drive two-seat sports car with a lightweight carbon-fiber body and 16-cylinder engine capable of producing 1,001 horsepower.

VW purchased the Bugatti name in 1998, according to a report in the industry newspaper Automotive News Europe, and introduced a concept version of the Veyron at the Tokyo auto show the following year.

It has taken the intervening six years to perfect the car, according to the Automotive News report and others, and there had been doubts that the car would ever actually be sold. In a 2003 public debut at Laguna Seca Raceway in California, a prototype Veyron spun out of control.

In 2003, according to Automotive News, the car still suffered from two major problems: The enormous engine tended to overheat and the car, capable of top a speed of well in excess of 200 miles per hour, was unstable at high speeds. Several reports have placed the car's top speed at about 250 miles per hour.

The Bugatti name originated with a company that built high-performance cars from 1910 to 1956. Bugatti now operates in the same Alsace region, now part of France, in which the original Bugattis were made.

The company announced that it will build a four-door version of the car in the future, according to a report on Edmunds.com's Inside Line Website.

I like it's general shape....too bad the styling came before testing, so that's why they've had so many problems with high-speed stability

I must admit I like the side profile a lot better than the 3/4 in the first shot.

Maybe I will have to buy one after all.:)

Lets see...
$1.2 Million USD = 1,416,719.99 CAD + 7% GST = 1,515,890.39...
But I'll give it to ya for $1.5, cuz I'm a nice guy. :)

Here's a Car and Driver spy shot (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=29&article_id=9957) of the Veyron, a 2001 C&D article (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=3462) (the related photo is no longer available) and a 2001 C&D blurb with a nice photo (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=3376) of the car.

I agree, the 2nd shot is much better. I think it is the paint job of the first shot that turns me off with the mixed colours.

Car & Driver did a speed run with the car months ago. The article appeared at that time and one of the editors (Pat or Csebe?) drove the car at 253 or so MPH.

The only way to get to that speed is to do a "special" setup of the car for high speed testing and then not touch the brakes, etc. Car is lowered, spoiler is lowered, etc. Once the car detects any "fear", the car reverts to "normal" driving mode and won't go 250...

I have not read the R&T article.

Most cars today already have twice the horsepower that the average person can handle...

Yeah, but that price doesn't include the cost of all of the tickets you'll get.

To quote Joe Walsh,

"My Maserati does 185,
I lost my license, now I don't drive."

If I already have a "little guy", do I get one of these automatically?

Uh, wait, forget I said anything.

Talk about gas guzzler, but then again, if you can afford the car...
It seems almost pointless to mention, but as you can imagine fuel consumption is significant. On our drive, the car averaged a staggering 44 L/100 km, which is truly impressive. Admittedly, we were travelling rather, um, briskly, but sedate driving will only return 30-ish anyway. While on the subject of fuel economy, it's amusing to note that at V-max the Veyron's 100 litres of premium fuel will be consumed in about 12 minutes – or 81.4 kilometres. If you don't have a calculator handy that's 125 L/100km!

LMFAO. I think the car ugly and probably handles like crap.

For that money I could get a whole bunch of cars which I would be much happier with. A vette, porche, GT, exige, M5 (not new styling) just to name a few. Might as well make a new house with a garage to hold them all as well.

Doesn't that make more sense?
